Official Gas Mileage Thread

I'm slacking.

 

I think it's winter fuel time and extra warm-up idling that's bringing me down to a solid 14mpg. I expect it will be more like 13-13.5 as the winter gets wetter and I idle/clear snow off longer.

 

You might want to look at the ‘state taxes’ involved on your gallon of gas. Please don’t move and bring those with you.

 

Definitely winter blend is effecting things. Losing about 1mpg average in the last few fills.

 

I drove like old people people fornicate and got less mpg. 331.8 miles on 24.29 gal for 13.65 mpg. That's 75 mph tops and only a few shifts above 3k. Random mpg continues...

 

Different transmission,
What kind of gas are you running, try a good quality gas.
Last tune up?
Fuel filter?
Last time you clean the carbon out of the throttle body?
PSI?

 

I wouldn’t feel to bad. I doubt there’s many 2000-2004 tundras that get much better than 15mpg on a tank to tank basis. Even on a completely stock truck I think the fuel economy.gov pegs it at 13city, 17hwy and 15 combined.

 

well, According to Fuelly, I was down to 8.6MPG my last tank. before that, 9.9, 10.6, 11.7.

anyone know why my mileage would drop like a rock once temps got below freezing? I was averaging 14-15 this summer, and now it dropped again. Obviously MPG goes down in the winter due to winter blend fuel and idling time, but this is insane. I'm lucky to get 200 miles on a tank!

 

Ouch.. That's brutal. Sorry to hear that. Something has to be wrong though. Winter fuel alone should drop you down into single digits.

 

that's what I thought. It's something related to the cold though. It did the same thing last winter. As soon as it warms up, MPGs go up. I'm lost.

 

I would throw some fuel additive in and just see if anything happens.

 

How long do you let it idle/warm up when it's cold? Long idle times could bring your mileage way down.

Are you running the defrost mode? That runs the AC compressor which could also cause your mileage to suffer.

 

Bring him down to 8mpg? Unless he's leaving it idle half the day I just don't see that happening. Something has to be wrong.

 

Filled up my tank when I first bought it in early November, I got 346 miles and put in 17.9 gallons. 130 miles of that was with my lift and 285’s so we’ll see what it drops to from here.

 

Yes I run in defrost mode, but that isn’t going to kill more than a fraction of an MPG. Plus, I ran the AC all summer.

exactly. I’m going to try some fuel system cleaner for the heck of it. It almost feels like there’s some increased rolling resistance when it’s below freezing, even after fully warm. Maybe I have some grease somewhere that doesn’t like the cold?

either that, or I’m thinking fuel injectors or coil packs are worn.

 

Hand calculated per usual prior posts here at 11mpg today.

Lots of idle time, no towing/hauling, and all city driving. Normal mpg considering.

4 years ago when I went to the used car dealer to buy my 02, I asked about the mpg. This was the result.

 

2015 4x4 Crewmax w 5.7 Terrible MPG
2003 2x4 Extracab w V6 also bad MPG
That's why I have a 2014 Yaris for commuting and great MPG

 

I traded my built 2003 4Runner on 35’s for a 2 door 2011 Yaris hatch, absolutely one of my favorite vehicles I’ve ever had bc of how simple it was and the gas mileage (routinely hit 38-42 MPG). Traded it in bc I couldn’t afford the gas to drive across town to date the now Mrs. in college haha

 

I have a 2004 Double Cab 4x2 and 90% of the time I’m pulling my near 5,000 lbs lawn trailer or my 6,700 lbs tractor. When I fill up I average about 11-14 mpg. I wish I could get better but with my usage I don’t see how.

 

Yeah, that’s pretty dang good. Most of us Average the same as you unloaded.

 

Just made a trip from Baton Rouge to Houston (I-10)....set the trip odometer to "0" when I left my home and set the cruise control on 73mph and let er eat....when I filled up in Houston, I divided the miles traveled by the number of gallons to refill the tank and got 16.9mpg! 2020 SR5 TSS Offroad edition (all-terrain tires on 20" wheels)....this truck has the 30+ gallon tank....the "miles to empty" display said I still had 121 miles I could go!

Access soft roll up cover (always covered)

tank was mixed driving, sorry I can’t quantify exactly how much city vs highway.

I calculated 14.77 mpg but I like 5’s and 0’s

So I’ll go with 14.5 mpg

 

2003 extended cab with 3.4 manual 4wd around 17-18 mostly backroad driving with 5 minutes twice a day on highway I give her the juice often but not crazy 5-10 above speed limit

 

This makes me feel better that I'm about where everyone else is. I get about 14.5 mostly highway

Filled up today with ethanol free gas. I want to see if it makes a difference. I got 341 miles to the tank at 15.13 MPG. Not bad for 40% city driving.
