    Hey all!

My father @mikey281 just got his first radio as an early Christmas present from my brother, and I need to help him install the radio and the faceplate in a logical/easily accessible location.

He got this radio for reference: https://www.gigaparts.com/yaesu-ftm-100dr-50w-2m-70cm-mobile.html

And he drives a 2018 CrewMax

I have read through the whole thread and wanted to pick everyone’s brain. If ya’ll had to go back again where would you install the radio unit and where / how would you install the faceplate.

We have good wrenching skills, but when it comes to the finesse needed to pull trim apart, and customize plastics, I am a little more hesitant..

Currently leaning towards the set up I came across in the thread referenced below. And using a ram mount on the Rago dashplate for the faceplate. But still up in the air for the radio.

    ICS FAB or Rago Fabrication

Any help appreciated, and thank you!

Quick question... How does the cable route from the cab to the bed? Is there a route at the back of the cab or do you need to go through the firewall and route back to the bed? How do you get into the bed from below? Do you drill?

You don't happen to know the part number? I've found two possible numbers.

Oh well... Thanks, I might grab a couple. I'd like to be prepared if I need to run through the floorboard and have spare caps on tap if I dork anything up.

That dash mount is a good idea.
I just bought myself a Yaesu FTM-400XDR, upgrading from an Icom 2730. The main unit will go under the driver seat, because it is easy to run power and the antenna coax from there. For the Icom I designed and 3D printed a mount for the face that placed it in front of the shifter. For the Yaesu, I'm going to try something different, I ordered this https://www.proclipusa.com/product/854957-proclip-center-mount , I also ordered this https://www.lidoradio.com/products/lm-ad-3-express-plate-adapter-for-ftm-400-ftm-350-ftm-100 . I'm not positive that they will work together, but I figured it was worth a shot, if they don't I'll figure something else out.

Just wondering how well the speaker audio will be with it under the seat. I'm half deaf at this point which is why mine is on the dash with the volume set to 11 :) Hell I have trouble in some of our cruisers since they like to stick the external speaker on the back of the center console facing backwards.

Looks like a clean install though! Good job.

The aux speaker is pretty damn loud that's why I grabbed it, programmed some repeaters, need to fix my aprs messages.

Yeah the "OEM Yaesu" isn't bad but needs to be louder. Might have to look into the one you bought.

It's like $50 or so, won't break the bank. I got it setup alright, I don't understand any of the digital modes or operation yet :notsure:.

Haven't done much with digital on the Yaesu myself since the nearest system fusion repeater is way too far away unless i'm up in New Hampshire (which by chance a work friend of mine runs ... it's just too far away). Just get the rig working and start having fun with APRS and stuff like that. Hitting far off repeaters is fun but personally I don't really want to talk to old men on a radio so ... yeah. My interest is more in packet radio and APRS.

I enjoyed doing QSP on digital modes using HF. I didn't see myself using an HF base station as much, and doubled down on the mobile dual band.

OH, and could someone PLEASE tell me WHERE THE HELL THE FLOORBOARD PLUGS ARE?! I was crawling under there looking to no avail...

For what it’s worth, I picked up a Rugged Radio 5W handheld for desert utv comm and it broke the first day of use. Buttons failed and stopped being able to transmit. What a piece of overpriced ($80) shit.
    Returning that garbage tomorrow.

Awesome, thank you for the suggestions! That Pro clip looks awesome, it’s in the perfect placement, and definitely doesn’t break the bank to give it a shot at that price point. Definitely way cheaper than the Rago/ICS hybrid set up I was thinking. Let me know how that goes and if it works I am sure I will be quick to follow suit.

Now I just got to figure out what to do with my Pop’s Coax cable. He has a rooftop magnetic mount as keeps telling me that is where the best reception is, but runs the cable out the rear window, and in this rainy conditions, just doesn’t seem like a permanent solution.

Anyone running a rooftop mount and if so how did you wire it? Or should I just work on getting one of those Rago rear bedside mounts and call it a day? Anyone switch between the two and notice any change in their reception?

    Thanks for the help!

Going to try and run the power and ant. through the firewall grommet on the driver's and passenger's side respectively when there's light outside again. Seems the least destructive way to pass the cabling through, can also plug it if I choose to go another route.

Not sure if this is helpful or not but the one I used for my antenna was under the middle of the rear seats. I have one of the plastic under seat storage bins so that area had already been cut out so it was easy to get to. After that I ran the antenna cable under the carpet and to the underside of the drivers seat.

There is another one on the front passenger floor pan almost dead center. You have to remove a big peice of "structural" styrofoam under the carpet to get the plug out, but it wasn't too hard to get too. I used it for my tailgate "Pop-n-Lock" and bed lights wiring.

Status update! Did NOT feel comfortable using ACC DC outlet despite intending to do so. I'm a military gentleman and a scholar, so I'm partial to front mounted antennas. Need some post eyelets for the battery, and I should be done. Also used 3m vinyl to protect the hood.

You can always drill a hole in the roof for a permanent NMO mount if you are brave enough, @TRD15559 did his not too long ago. For a mag mount you can run the cable out through the rubber plug under the front seat and then up to the roof between the cab and bed.
And yes, having the antenna in the middle of the roof will get you the best reception, for my use having it on the bedrail is good enough.

Guess no one was really interested lol. Following up, it's so much better wired directly. It was stupid to think otherwise, decent performance so far.
