Blackout process

I’m going with plasitdip option first. Maybe it will look good!

 

Waiting to See Finished Results - did you just spray over the Chrome or scuff it up? I am wanting to do the Full blackout on mine and have looked at several Replacement pieces and declined them due to poor quality and not even same size from different vendors - Goal for entire truck is No Bloody Chrome.......

So, just a tip...At first (when peeling the excess) you are going to think that the dip is very soft and peels too easy. Fight the urge to just rip/roll it all off (and call it a failure) because after a day or 2 it will dry MUCH harder and after a week it will be like as hard as vinyl wrap. My first couple jobs were "failures" due to my haste. Hope all goes well!

 

well I'll have updated pictures tomorrow. when I was peeling the excess off it pulled it off of some of the lettering. So my question is should I wait longer before peeling off? And can I spray the one area or should I peel it all off?

 

You'll need to peel the excess after it dries (30 min or so). It won't peel very easily if you leave it overnight. Did you do about 5-7 light coats at all angles? That is very important also. For the areas of damage, you should be able to just touch them up.

 

I debadged my truck only to find ghosting in the paint that I couldn’t get out. In the process the adhesive on my chrome badges was ruined, so I was forced to buy new black badges to replace them. I went with these and the quality and fitment is great.

If you can debadge for 50ish bucks that would be the way to go! I didn't have that option since the sequoia "platinum" and "I-force" badge are not made in black. How is it looking today?

 

looks ok. there's a few places that need to be touched up. I didn't get to work on it today tho... Motorcycle ride lol

 

Have begun the process as well. Front grille and badges done. Bumpers are next. Skeptical on if I should leave the wheels and running boards alone once the bumpers are done.

I wouldn't do the wheels. The running boards are on my list of things to do as well, probably powdercoat.

My goal is to get rid of the plastic chrome. If end up leaving the steel chrome running boards and steel chrome bumper ends, I'm fine with that.

 

I have done everything with black Plasti Dip so far. I am working on the bumpers now and will post pics when done.

I am putting 7 coats on all the surfaces I am doing.

 

I tried plastidip on my bumpers. No way......thumbs down. Much happier with Line-X Premium! I have my BW flares done as well.

Expensive but very durable. Some guys on here have done it themselves using Rhinoliner.

how man I couldn't get mine to look worth the crap so I took peeled it off. Any tips esp on the decals? I think I may need to leave a little room on the side and not tape up so close to the emblem

 

Yes you need to leave a little less then half an inch between the tape and the emblem, so when you peel the excess off it breaks where the body panel meets the emblem. You also may want to try using a sharp knife to cut along the edges as you pull to get a clean break.

 

Also, make sure that you don't cake too much plastidip on. As TundraMax said, leave at least a half an inch so you are able to grab and peel the excess off. The tape is not to "mask" the entire emblem, it's to keep the other areas from getting too much spray on them. You need to have excess or else you'll never be able to peel it off sharply around the emblem. 5-7 light coats at varying angles...wait 30 minutes....and carefully peel the excess. Or maybe just look into the blackout emblem kit mentioned above. I would have went that route but it is not offered for the Sequoia.
