Another Tundra or Jump Ship

It is all personal experience for the most part for example I had a 3 Dodge and then Ram trucks before this Tundra all have been good to me and I would consider another one. I had a Ford (wasn't mine was a rental) that left me stranded but that didn't stop me from trying an Ecoboost one before I got my Tundra. For me I know nothing is perfect but how I judge a company is by their costumer service and how well they stand by their product.

 

I don't know - owning a Honda Ridgeline would have to be pretty depressing.

 

You gotta remember there are a ton of fan boys here. They mean well though. I do believe Toyota builds a much better vehicle than Ford but I think it also has a lot to do with the owner. My brother has an F150 with over 300,000 miles. They aren't ALL garbage.

 

I couldn’t agree more. I’m definitely partial to Toyota / Lexus SUV’s and like Toyota trucks. Yet, per trucks bought, the Big 3 do something right and have just as many (actually more) loyal buyers. When adding in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, it’s a different conversation in many regards as well. Always good to compare and contrast the makes and models, hands-on (if possible), and offer praise and constructive criticism. I think doing so ensures better overall products for us all.

 

A ton of fanboys here is an understatement..it ridiculous the tundra is not that nice of a truck, i would much prefer to be back in my 7.3 powerstroke

 

Thats a bummer man. All my buds in MT that have the Diesel ZR2 love'em..more showroom capable and better gas mileage then i get....

 

From my experience the domestics are in the 80-90% reliable and won't leave you stranded. When you factor in how many are made that is a LOT of trucks that will have no major issues. But all it takes is one nightmare to colour your opinion - I've dealt with Ford trucks that were in and out of the shop for separate electrical and transmission issues and the techs could not solve them, that's left me very shaky on trusting them with my own money. I don't want to have to use my warranty if it means I'm in the shop every month trying to get an issue solved. I hear way more stories of that happening to Ford's than I have Tundra's, and that's accounting for how many more Fords there are than Tundras. Same goes for GM, Ram, and Nissan. Sure the Tundra isn't perfect, but if I didn't think it was the best to own, why would I have bought one? I sure as hell don't make enough money to just buy one to try it out.

 

The reason why i didnt get f150 i think i was looking at 2016 and up. First way to muvh money why pay out the ass for something and two years you lost half your money its just dosemt make sense. I test drove 2.7 and the 3.5 and the 5.0. All seem to have good power but the 3.5 really bad mpg while towing. 2.7 seems to have no power only on sport mode which equally bad mpg. I just dont like ecoboost that just my opinion The only good one was the 5.0 but it didnt seem to have the power like my dads 2007 tundra. I test drove like 10 different f150 and they seem personally overpriced even the salesman agreed. Test drove the 3rd gen tundra and they were sluggish. And realized they switched the throttle mapping to make it less sensitive for better mpg. So i got an 2008 fully loaded half the price no quarter the price of f150. And spent the rest of the money on mods. Like headers, exhaust tune gears lsd. Stuff like that dyno at 365hp... Raced my buddys raptor they have like 3 of them smoked everyone of them by like 4 car lengths. Tundra is built for a lifetime f150 is built for 2 years like a lease lol but honestly i do like ford but not the half ton. I love my wifes mustang probably the best vehicle they can ever produce.

 

Yes let’s compare a 3/4 ton diesel to a half ton. I drive a ford every day at work and have for 13 years. Maintenance is on them as other repairs and upgrades. Only ford I would consider is an f-250 with 6.2 gas. I have 187k on my current one. Fan boy out!

Hahahah, that's what I thought about that comparison. I own an F150 that I like and owned a Ram that I loved. They both had/have significant problems. Won't touch a GM product ever again. Try to buy a Sierra 1500, F150, or Ram 1500 with all the features of my Platinum and it will be an additional $5-6k. The Tundra has been #1 in reliability for a decade, and #2 is a Ridgeline...screw that. It has a ridiculously high resale value compared to every other full size pickup so that the cost of increased fuel consumption still makes it the cheapest true cost to own by far. It has a powerplant and rear axle that make sense for me (someone that tows big heavy toys and understands why engine cycles matter).

This is not hyperbole. It is literally a better financial decision to buy a new Tundra and throw a hundred dollar bill out your window onto the highway every week than it is to buy any new Ford, GM, or Ram pickup of any class. Hell yeah, I'm a fan boy!

 

When sales numbers are evaluated, I’m not sure The Big 3 care if they completely catch up with Toyota per the Tundra reliability. It has never had more than 7% market share (ten years or so ago) or lower than 4.9% or so. And, I don’t think Toyota is too concerned either. Their remodel will likely do well (but may not get them past 10% market share). And The Big Three plus Rivian (which I’m intrigued by) and Tesla (less intrigued by) will offer more features and new tech / efficiency. All in all, I say it’s a great time to be a truck enthusiast... IF they quit ridiculously overpricing them.

And I agree with another post in this thread, it’s not wise / fair to compare any 3/4 or 1 ton from rivals to the Tundra. I think the 2019 RAM Power Wagon is superior to any 2019-2020 stock Tundra (yes, including the TRD Pro). You can buy a new, loaded 2019 Power Wagon for the same price as a 2020 TRD Pro. Ram has a ridiculous markup they will come down quite a bit on. Yet, they are different beasts. The TRD Pro is still better than any stock half ton you can buy from the Big Three (including the GMC AT4 which is pretty sweet with the 6.2 and 10 speed or the RAM Rebel).

 

Damn that list has the Nissan Titan sales down by 50% ouch

 

They do care about the Tundra - the big 3 are much better now than in 2007. If they had of kept on the same path Toyota would have a much bigger share than 10%. Toyota made them step up their game both in reliability and capability. Tesla is doing now what Toyota did in 2007. Toyota will see how far their hybrid will take the Tundra then drop it if that's not enough, the big 3 have to get in the electric game. They lose their half tons and they go out of business. Good competition is healthy, if everyone agreed the Tundra was the best and cheapest truck the big 3 would be in trouble. But since each manufacturer has something that attracts some buyers they're still in business since they all make competitive products.

 

Nissan sucks at trucks

 

The Frontier has been a dependable mid size pickup. My stepdad has over 200k miles on his. His most significant repair was his radiator. The Titan doesn't have the same reputation though.

 

Ok which one titan, chevy or ford to owned for a long time.

 

Most reliable or which would I take a chance at? The Titan from what I can tell isn't bad as long as you stay away from the Cummins. But I really don't like driving them so I'd most likely take a Ford right now out of those 3 since you left out Ram and GMC.

I’d personally say the Chevy I own a 2004 Chevy 1500 and have only had a few problems with it since 04. My Tundra is an 18 my first Tundra the difference is night and day compared to the Chevy after having it for over a year I wouldn’t own anything else. My only complaint with the Tundra is the TSS but I can live with that at least for now. I’ve owned about a dozen Toyota trucks and have never had any problems with any of them my best ones were a 84 xtra cab with solid front axles and manual hubs (probably my favorite) that truck would go anywhere and the other was a 97 T100 extra cab v6 with a manual transmission another one that was great off road.

 

I remember when these arguments raged on the first Tundra forum I was on 20 years ago. How the Ford/GM/Dodge were better full sized trucks and more capable. How the Tundra was an underpowered-1/2 ton-mid-sized/full-sized wanna be. So, when I hear these arguments now: "It's like deja vu all over again"

It's been 20 years since I bought my Tundra, 20 years & zero-nada-zilch defects later. And my truck has a current value of $14,000 about 50% what I paid new.

I think there is an element of jealousy and/or regret in the owners of other brands. I just don't understand why they come to a Tundra site and pitch

 

“Almost” pulled the trigger on a 2018 Power Wagon as it was a similar price point and specs to a new 2019 platinum (I think it was a bit more or same @20k miles).

wife cabashed that idea since she didn’t like how tall and overkill it was. But overall because of the off-road specs the towing capacity and payload are closer to a half ton then 3/4 due to it being a beast off road.

the new 2019 was outside the price range I wanted to spend, plus I had to factor in 1500 for a long extended warranty on any dodge I wanted.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I think Toyota offers a great value when you consider options, reliability at a price point compared to the domestics.

a Ram or F150 would be a nice vehicle to drive every day and have loads of modern tech that the tundra doesn’t have.

if I were leasing I would look at a domestic all day.

I preferred not to lease so it was value for the options and the domestics even with their latest tech we’re coming out to be more expensive than the tundra when factoring in purchase price and depreciation across 6 years. Plus an added extended warranty as I wouldn’t want to gamble with a domestic.

summary, if leasing jump to the big three...why care about the reliability.

I kept my Tacoma for 4 years (and that was premature) and I figured on my 40th birthday I can buy myself another loaded truck (8 years from now) and hopefully the antequated tundra will be problem free until then.

PS the only thing I would add as at least the 5.7 hemi 8 speed seems like a reliable powertrain but MDS and other fuel saving tech does negatively impact engine longevity from what I have read.

fords 5.0 seems to be having issues with this...

I wouldn’t touch a Chevy 5.3 or 6.2 with the 8 speed...way too many problems.

the 10 speed still seems to be having on and off issues.

at times I wish I didn’t apply finances to everything but in the truck decision even though buying new doesn’t quite make financial sense, the Tundra would minimize the overall expense while fitting the bill.

and even when I was looking for a 17 tundra platinum, it was still reasonably close to price to a new. And I always remember that half the time buying used is also buying someone else’s problems...

Are fleet vehicle purchases tallied in this chart for the Big 3? If so, that would probably account for a lot of the trucks sold for sure...

 

The minivan of trucks and butt ugly, look at it and eliminate the bed mentally and you will see the Odyssey.

They sure are. You go through Alberta, which is the truck capital of Canada, and there are far more personal Ram's and GM's than Ford's. But there's just so many Ford's with logos driving on the highway when looking at half tons. If you drive through the right areas you can for a short time see more Tundra than F150 personal trucks.

 

I broke a trend on my street: 3 of my 4 neighbours to the north drive F150s, as does the guy who just moved in next door to the south.

I see far more Rams in the small towns. City folk don't seem to drive them much. Since I've been looking, I've been noticing lots of Tundras in the suburbs around where I live.

 

They are that’s why numbers are good.

 

Actually, I’m not so sure they are combined. Retail Sales and Fleet Sales are often kept separate.

 

Well boys, I was talking about it earlier in this thread and some others about the costs of Fords. Our company has the following:

4 Ford F-150
3 Ford F-250
7 Ford F-450
2 Ford F-350

8 GMC Denali 1500
2 GMC Denali 2500HD
1 GMC Denali 3500HD
4 larger GM Kodial trucks.

1 2015 Toyota Tacoma

All 1/2 tons are for project managers to drive to job sites. Never sees a trailer but some can get high mileage due to a lot of driving around. All the 3/4 and up are work trucks for crews and get beat in to be fair....

We must have a curse with Ford as the costs compared to others are astronomical compared to the GM/Duramax platform unfortunately.

We have had significant problems with all the 1/2 ton Fords except 1. It is a 2016 Lariat with the 5.0 and 83k miles.....

Well today that changed. The guy driving it said he was in traffic and just took off as usual from a stop light. Truck started shaking and running really rough all of a sudden. A bad vibration and a few seconds later truck CEL came on. He limped it to our shop which was about 5 miles away. No oil on the ground but it is smoking pretty bad out the exhaust. It sounds terrible and it is knocking bad in the bottom end it sounds like. Now it will not start. Our mechanics are pricing a new engine but we are going to trade all the Ford 1/2 tons in next week for GM 1/2 tons. This was the straw that broke the camels back and we need some year end sec. 179 expenses. Our owner said absolutely no more Fords.

Also to add salt to Fords wounds, the 2019 Ford F-250 Lariat we bought for one of our Superintendents to drive started having problems yesterday afternoon with 8k on the clock. Runs rough and is throwing codes for low rail pressure for fuel according to our mechanics. Has to go back to dealer and see if they can diagnose. Already had driveline vibrations earlier, which dealer fixed. Not a good day for our Fords today......

The F-150 was towed today also to dealer to diagnose more but was told don't waste too much time on it. Exploring engine options or trading it as is and seeing what we get....

 

I'm certainly not a Ford fan, but even I can say you guys are cursed. That is just next level bad luck.
