Just paid off my Silver Sky 17 Limited Crewmax TRD OR with 56k miles and put a deposit down on a 20 MGM 1794 TRD OR. My Dad always told me to get the last year of something that’s been around and proven. Should I do the deal? Price is right on purchase and trade but I’ve been looking at my current truck and wondering. If I trade I’ll owe way less than I just spent today paying off the 17. I’m going back and forth. The 1794 I like the memory seats, moonroof, and interior along with all the other features yet my 17 is my first brand new truck and in my eyes she’s the best looking truck on the road including other Tundras I see daily.

I would hold onto the 17 and wait for the Gen 4 Tundra to come out. It's slated for 2021. Just my .02:D

    A lot to consider:
What deal? Trade in offer? Amount financing?
    Payments not an issue?
Many would say keep the 2017 unless funds are abundant.

There is hardly anything different from 2017 to 2020. Why get rid of a paid for truck? At least wait for the 2021.

Man, it would be nice to not have a payment. I would keep the ‘17 and save the monthly payment money that you were paying. By 2021 you may have enough with the trade in to buy the 2021 outright.....

My dealership (from multiple salesmen) tell me the 5.7 isn’t leaving. Most have mentioned an Eco mode and an 8 speed transmission. This video assures me to stay 3rd Gen.

I can buy the 20 outright but thinking of financing the difference along with a down payment and making extra payments equal to or more of what I’ve been paying and having it paid off in about a year and a half. If I do trade I’ll be keeping it until the wheels fall off although that’s what I said about this one.

I know this sounds petty but the memory seats are a huge selling point because of the adjustments we have to make when driving due to the height difference between me and my wife. Plus I do like to grip a wood steering wheel.

It doesn’t but I never would have thought I’d put 56k miles on in 3 years although there’s nothing wrong with that.

I don't completely disagree with that video. The 17 having the trans cooler is definitely a plus but I gotta say, having a 19 I have totally changed my tune on TSS type features and this is coming from someone who was driving a stick shift with no frills before. The reason I have changed my mind is the radar cruise control, it's awesome, I'm someone who has always used cruise control and the most annoying thing ever is cruising down the left lane and the knuckle head in front of you is what I like to call a speedfluxer, and they go from 65 to 80 to 75 and totally kills you relaxing with cruise control. The radar fixes that and let's you relax and get less pissed off at the idiot that shouldn't be in the left lane. One thing to add is I did purposely get a 19 because it's the last model with a key, I hate push button starts and another added benefit from having a key model is aftermarket remote starts don't shut off the engine when you open the door. The 2020 models and up I believe come with a remote start from factory but will shut off when the door is opened no matter what you do, even if you put an aftermarket one in.

To the OP, from someone with a Platinum one thing you may want to consider since the memory seat is a big deal for you. It can only be used in park and the seat and steering wheel will move to the last position when getting back in, could be an issue if your wife is much smaller and sits close up and then you get in and your truck tries to kill you by squeezing you against the steering wheel lol. The seat moving on entry and exit can be turned in the stereo menus but the steering wheel moving can only be turned off with TechStream, unless they added the option to the new infotainment system.

I'd wait just to see what the next generation looks like. You can either get the next gen or get one of the final "old" body styles. Dealerships will be wanting to unload their inventory and willing to do deals. I don't know if it's different in your market, but here in WA the 1794's don't sell well. I wouldn't be worried about finding one.

Very true and a good point for the OP, waiting til November to buy is a great idea, I got an amazing deal on a 2019 Platinum last month since they wanted to get all the 19s off the lot.

Keep the 17. In 6 months, a couple scratches and the newness gone on the new one, you’ll wonder what the hell you did it for.

You have a 3 year old truck that's paid off. Why get into a new truck and have payments just for amenities?

There is always another good deal around the corner. The fact that you are asking, is because a part of you is hesitant. I have been there and glad I sought advice and didn’t pull the trigger. My truck has only 53k and is loaded with mods the way I want it. Keep your truck and your money.

I would keep it, I too have a 17' that is paid off with 77k on it .
I was thinking of trading it in for a newer model. but when they gave a # for trade in i was like Hell No, I'd take a $16K loss.
I would spend the $$ on mods like headlights / lift and tires, possible 4.88 gears for towing.
after finding out that the newer ones don't have a trans cooler I was out.
    Just my .02

    See sig for mods...
Keep the truck. You already took the first years depreciation hit, might as well amortize it over the next 4 years, then it won't be so bad per year. By that time, the 2024 will have been out 4 years and kinks worked out and you can get the last years of the new one. You will have 130k miles on the 2017 at your rate and good time to sell to someone looking for one used without scaring them off with 200k miles.

trade off a 55,000 mile truck that has the capability of 500,00 miles or more?
your pops is right about new models but,
one thing your pops didn't teach you is....

don't be a fool with your money.

you can drive that truck for the next 9-10 years for free.
save your expendable income that is burning a hole in your pocket... instead of buying a new truck every 3 years.
one day you may need that $$$ incase of... a crippled economy, injury or illness

I put 500,000 miles on a 4runner. only cost me a radiator besides regular maint.
I would still be driving it if some jack wagon didn't rear-end it.
