I just don't get it. How does this even happen?

In TN I pay $70 for a special Gadsden Flag license plate. To renew regular plates it's only $35.

    Tennessee=free state.

In fairness to them, they are probably making a lot more money than you in MS and me in TN. That's the trade-off.

If I'm wrong then god help them.

Last month I paid $650 in KS for my 2019 Tundra for 2020 registration. This includes vehicle personal property tax that declines yearly do to depreciation.

Longer list than the wife needs to know about....
$480 here in MT for a 2016 Tundra. Our registerations get cheaper the older the truck gets, was ~$650 when new.
After 10 years we can "permanently register" in Montana so the old Taco hasn't had anything due for over 12 years.

I commented on my own post above to correct it - the $1000 wasn't registration, it was the annual personal property tax. Which is still insane, of course. I don't remember exactly how much my registration fee was - but I believe it was right around $100.

Yeah, they got rid of the county stickers, which were useless, but still charge you the same fee. Yep - it's the personal property tax that's ridiculous. In Loudoun, mine is $1000. And that's with their personal property "tax relief" - a bill that was passed, I guess, years ago (I don't remember what it was like before the tax relief law) that significantly lowers the tax bill.

Here's the pers prop tax I paid for a 2016 DC:

    2017: $1,343.91
    2018: $1,073.44
    2019: $954.46

Gov Gilmore implemented a 5-year phaseout. Warner froze it. I found an article that said it had hit 70% relief when it was frozen, depending on locality. Arlington for example only saw around 30%. I'd seriously consider moving, or finding a way to beat the system, if I had to pay more than I do now.

    From the article:
"From a public policy perspective, it is difficult to justify singling out one good—cars—for an annual tax. That it is an ad valorem tax is even more difficult to justify, as the value of one’s vehicle has little connection to the degree to which the owner uses roads or related government services."
TLDR: they tax you because they can.

For the Cali residents whats your insurance cost like? Just curious how it works out for the average driver. I suppose the city you live in would have a large impact in cost. In my case in Ontario Canada, i moved from a tourist town on the water of 20,000 to another town 1 hr away on the water, same size, but less tourists. My insurance dropped $700 a year.

So with registration and full insurance coverage (130 /month) i pay $1680 a year.

I pay about $1000 a year. I’m smart, my stepfather and I are on the same policy so that we can share the cars. And get a multi car discount. I’m almost 41, I don’t live at home but I’ve kept my drivers license address to his house for this very reason.

I can confirm this BS in VA. Not only do we pay the $70 registration fee, but there is also a personal property tax EVERY YEAR that is absolutely outrageous. For my 2018 4Runner LTD it's about $1500 a year, for the Tundra it's about $900. There you go, hopefully, my fellow Virginias will chine in on this STUPID tax that is nothin more than extortion by the government.

Last years registration in Wisconsin was $84. Our new governor bumped it up to $94 this year. The people who own hybrids saw an increase of $75 and electric vehicles went up $100. Apparently those folks get to pay gas tax whether they like it or not.

Definitely extortion and pretty ironic considering that VA was one of the 13 colonies to ban together to fight... taxes.

I guess we’ve got it pretty good in Texas.
When you buy the car you pay normal sales tax. 8.5%. Then the registration fee which is $80 for my Crewmax and cheaper for smaller vehicles.

Only other taxes I pay are property taxes which in my small town outside of the capital is about $5k every year in escrow. But as homes values climb, due to overcrowding and supply and demand, my taxes go up as well. My mortgage payment was $1415 one month and the next was $1585 because of the extra taxes. $150 may not be a lot to you but it is to me.

My military plate in TN was around $30. When I lived in GA we had the ad valorem tax. Ridiculous. Think I paid $350 back in 2007 for a new Ram. My buddy had a new Tundra and lived in Cobb county. Think he paid around $550.

Smog check here in CO is $25 if you need it. I have two years to go and even then I'll look up where the roving smog check truck is parked and then drive by it a couple times during the year which keeps you from having to go down to the main smog check station and pay.

I was def not expecting this when I posted my grief. Almost makes me feel bad that I complained After reading how much more some pay. NY has become the shining example of high taxes and nothing to show for it (at least for the people who pay taxes). My only guess is in Az they are high since there is no state income tax???

I wish. There is state income tax in AZ. Our registration fees are high because our gov't tends to follow along with whatever California gov't does on just a slightly smaller scale. There is no separate personal property tax in AZ so they get you on the vehicle registration. The cost eventually falls under $100/year when the value of the vehicle is next to nothing.

Mine is about $100 a year.

But I also pay property tax every year on vehicles. The tundra was just under $1200 this year.
