I just renewed my registration and wanted to puke after having to pay $216. I live in NYC, and we pay a higher rate then the rest of the state. Just curious what everyone else pays to renew their registration. What a complete waste of money.

I'm just 3 counties north of you and just paid $240. I don't use the buses or subways, the closest is about 65 miles south of me and still have to pay a surcharge. Can't wait to leave the State.

Yeah looks like Mass is actually cheap compared to other states! $60 for 2 years for a normal non-commercial passenger vehicle doesn't sound too bad now!

This is the main reason that my truck is an 08. In MS, you are charged "ad valorem" which is basically a privilege tax based on the value of your car. The workaround is that they value any vehicle older than 10 years at $100 regardless of what it is, so I bought a sequoia that fits the bill but has the same body style as vehicles 10 years newer:). Just to give you an estimate of the ad valorem cost, my wife just renewed the reg on her 2013 Audi A5 for $295 which is good for 1 year. It's basically like paying state tax on your vehicle every year.....robbery, but what can you do?

I paid $564 this year on a 3 year old truck. It was more last year. First year I had to do it, it was between $800-900.

So it sounds like in some of these states you have to pay excise tax when you renew your registration? If so that makes sense we just pay it to the town/city where the vehicle is registered and not when we renew the registration.

Interesting that certain states like California, NY, and Colorado are being raped while others are not even in the triple digits.

To answer the "Are you serious" question....

Yes. California charges annual tags between 700-800 and they INCREASE not decrease. Voters approved it. These folks also voted in a gas tax increase to 47.3 cents per gallon.
Well... San Francisco and Los Angeles did, the rest of the state did not.

Its a giant slush fund. Even mentioned that in the bill. Roads are filled with potholes, desperately need widening and repair, and are a public embarrassment.

I remember the days when a 10+ year old truck would be cheap. Now they just rake us over for our “commercial” vehicles
