    Good morning all,

Welcome to another one of those threads......

I've been on the fence for quite some time about upgrading to a platinum tundra. Currently driving a 2015 Blue Ribbon Metallic SR5 Crewmax Tundra. There are many plans in the future to make this truck what I want, but my question is, can it get there? Does it make sense financially to get it there? Would it be wiser to start on a new truck that needs less "upgrades".

I know I've come to the "best" website for a person to save money but here we are.

List of future mods listed from most likely to least likely that would be occurring on the current truck.

    - Fuel tank upgrade(My biggest gripe about my current truck is the range)
    - Black out/color match the chrome(haven't made up my mind on black vs blue)
    - Baja designs Hood bulge light bar
    - BD Fogs
    - Bed liner
    - Leather/heated seats
    - OEM LED headlights
    -

List of mods on current truck

    - Bilstein 5100's front/rear with AAL
    - Falken wildpeak at3w's with 20" fuel vector(I'd work on transferring these over and setting the truck back to stock height, if the dealer would play ball)
    - ESP underseat storage
    - TRD Shift knob(Transfer to new truck)
    - Dirty Deeds exhaust(Transfer to new truck)
    - Tonneau cover(Transfer to new truck)
    - sub/amp(Transfer to new truck)
    - Spyder headlights(Remove and put stock back on to sell)
    - OEM Tow mirrors

Phew, almost there and I'm sure I missed something.

A platinum tundra would wipe out most of those wanted upgrades along with a few enhanced features.
    - Already color matched minus handles and mirrors
    - Leather/heated(bonus cooled) seats
    - Larger fuel tank, 38 gallon vs 46 gallon. Either are better than 25.
    - Push button start(bonus)

    Downside

    - I'd lose the tow mirrors
    - It's a $50k(sticker) truck
    - It's not blue...and don't say get the voodoo, that's a lot of bright blue on that big of a truck. Color looks great on a 4runner or tacoma, not a fan on a tundra.

After all the ramblings and getting my thoughts organized it seems logical, money aside, to get the platinum. I just can't get over that $50k price tag. There is the option for new, but everything in my region seems to be 2-3k under the price of a brand new one.

Your truck looks great the color it is. I would keep it and do the upgrades

My 2 cents: Your truck looks sharp and should last a long time. I wouldn't want to take on the price hike of a new model to get those few differences, but that's me. If range is a huge issue for you, there is always this upgrade kit:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/upg...-gal-200-off-transferflow.46545/#post-1203179

Most of your other wish list items would be extra purchases even if you did get the 2020 Platinum. If you don't care about money, then go for it! I care. A lot.

I'd sit tight and see what the re-design looks like. You already have a Tundra, so no rush in buying nearly the same truck, just for a few new features.

Unless your mileage is crazy high, love the one you’re with.
You can add the features you desire for a tiny fraction of the $50k you will have to lay out.

However, your truck is going to be worth more than peanuts!

Is something else (not mentioned in the thread) motivating you to buy new?

I've looked at these extensively as well as the LRA fuel tank. The price hike is what's making me contemplate a new vehicle. By the time all is added to the current truck, I'm close to $4,500 for lights, fuel tank and leather/heat.

No, this is purely the desire for a platinum. I've also toyed with the idea of a sequioa for the third, but getting black interior without aftermarket won't work for the family.

I'm kind of in the same boat.. Bought an SR5 and now I want a platinum/pro for the added features. I'm planning on waiting for the remodel to see what people trade in for it, then snag a used 2020 if I can find a good deal.. unless I like the remodel, then I'm SOL.

So...what’s easier to pay off, $5000 or $50,000?
I get wanting a new one but when it’s all said and done you’re buying a new truck with the exact same drivetrain, just different trim options.
Plus your truck (like my ‘17) doesn’t have all the stupid nannies the new ones do. Those would drive me NUTS.

This opinion is coming from a retired guy. If I was still earning, those circumstances might change my mind.

Your current truck is a beauty.
Personally, I would change what I don’t like - the idiotic sized gas tank being #1 - and roll with it. I bet you can find waaay better accessories aftermarket than the new ones have easily.

Edit to add: The do-over new release may be something to wait on too but I don’t think it will be earth shattering.

I'm on the fence there also. All the rumors I'm hearing are a hybrid turbo v6 platform. Depending on which platform they choose, existing or brand new, would also sway my decision and put my right back at square one.

The new features are also piquing my intrest. Apple car play, larger head unit, push button start, smart door unlock, power fold mirrors....to many to list really.

And this is part of why I come to the forum. I didn't even consider the nannies...the other part is to spend money

Keep what you got. Dig the color, and you've already done some great mods. $50K is a huge pricetag.

Keep the truck man, and do some more mods over time if that's what you want. Not worth to spend $50k when you have rig that's been reliable and this nice

The other possible snake in the grass is that in 2019 Toyota eliminated the transmission cooler. Guys are seeing trans temps 30deg higher than pre-2019 temps. That might be a deal-breaker for me.

Been there.... Buy the big tank. Keep what you have. This too will pass. There is always another truck. If you are in the fence, wait until you are completely off.

FWIW I bought a 17' platinum for 37 with 24k miles. Saved a lot fo money for a nearly identical truck minus LED headlights and pushbutton start.
I'd wait for the redesign. Even if you get a new Platinum , you'll still spend a shit ton of money on upgrades to make it like your current truck.

Sometimes the wanting is better than the having. Your truck is awesome, save your money as there is ALWAYS gonna be something bigger, brighter, better (maybe) out there. Wait til the redesign, then make your decision.

Do it! Went through similar thing, only I totalled my ‘15 SR5. Got a ‘20 Limited and I frickin love it. The keyless entry w/ push button start, the larger, higher quality screen, apple carplay, shark fin antenna, power leather seats, and most importantly the 38 gallon tank. You don’t realize how important these things are until you actually get them. I was worried the TSS was going to annoy me but the adaptive cruise and the auto braking are actually pretty awesome too. Everything else I turn off. Blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert are really nice too. But I’m going to lose those when I change my bumper. Really bummed about losing the BSM.

Sorry, not trying to leave everyone in limbo. I won't be making this choice overnight by any means. Been super slammed with work the past few days so I haven't had much time to do anything else.

Everything I'm reading is pushing more towards keeping the truck until the redesign, which I'm sure I'll go through the same process I'm in now.

See, I lean towards not doing it...then these kind of comments push me a little more towards doing it!

But I appreciate everyone taking time to give me there 2 cents on the matter. More than likely I'll just drive the truck for another few years until the wife is sick of hearing me debate this every other week and forces me to get a new one....Only time will tell.

Kind of an apples to pineapple comparison.
You are driving your truck, his was totaled.
If you get your truck wiped out by some texting or drunk dipshit, THEN it’s apples to apples.
:turtleride: Patience is your friend in things like this, the worst deal I ever made was made in a hurry.

(tell your wife you’re doing this for her. After all, you want to make sure she’s riding in the best truck you can provide. That may last for 6 seconds but it’s worth a shot :))

Well...I waited. Put it out of my mind, and then it slowly snuck back in. Didn't do this in a hurry, but ended going a completely different direction. With the deal they gave me on the new one and all other factors considered, I feel it was a good deal.

Ended up getting a screaming deal on a 2019 TRD Pro. Appreciate everyone's feedback on this.
