Think I just bought a 04 tundra with vvti

Popped open the hood and says iforce on the cover and looks identical to my 05 with blown head gaskets. Needed something to get me threw the winter and bought this for 1200$. There wasnt any iforce engine in any 04's was there?

 

You bought an entire truck for $1200?

2004 did not have VVTI.

All first gens with V8s had "i-Force" engines...it was just a marketing term that was birthed with the 1st Gen Tundra V8s....vvti is an actual mechanical difference in the valvetrain that didn't show up till 2005.

Yes. I have been trying to work on it but was having hiccup after hiccup. I pulled the bed and PS pump off of my steps dad truck and this new tundras running like a top(just two toned now lol) now that I have a running truck I'll probably pull the engine and do head gaskets with some working space. My garage was just barely big enough to back the truck in against the rear wall with 3ft to my garage door. I'm still not giving up but I needed something to run

 

If I remember my 2005 correctly, didnt vvti engines have a plastic intake manifold and the pre-vvti use aluminum?

 

I thought they were just painted black, not plastic.

I can check and tell you when I get home. For a fact my 04 is silver (assumed aluminum) and my 05 is black. I THINK its plastic

 

Does anybody know of a way to verify it is in fact not a vvti without ripping everything apart? Just so I can verify it isn't a guaranteed motor swapped truck

 

Isn't the VIN stamped on the engine?

 

Pull your ECM and get the part # off it, then call your local dealer and ask him what the part # matches. ECMs are DEFINITELY different between VVTI and non-VVTI 2UZ-FEs.

 

My 2000 Tundra doesn't have VVTi, but years ago I had a VVTi V6 in a Sienna. Aren't there cam shaft sensors on the exterior of the engine?

 

Intake manifold would be black and it would have those horrible air injection manifolds for the exhaust. If you have neither then it isn't VVTi

 

One of Toyota's dirty little secrets here. There is no such thing as VVTi, I know, it's shocking. Toyota knew that if they made the intake manifold black they would gain 30hp, they made up VVTi so that other manufacturers wouldn't catch on.

Engine number should be stamped, not cast, on the engine block center in front of and under intake manifold for 2UZ-FE engine. Any embossed cast numbers are likely date codes or part numbers. If I understand correctly, last six digits of engine number should match last six digits of VIN. If the engine number last six are not the same as the VIN last six, then you do have an engine transplant.

VVTI engines have the black plastic manifold and the timing belt/cam sprocket covers are different on the VVTi motors. Very easy to tell if you know what you are looking for without taking anything apart.

 

I guess the most obvious difference is this:

Vvti tundras came with a 5spd trans

Pre vvti came with a 4 speed

 

With a sticker on the left cover that looks like this.

 

Go about 50mph and then floor it. Does it feel like it gets a boost in power in the high rpms? Does it feel like it could haul ass to 100 like nothing? Then it's vvti.

Also worth mentioning... You can swap the newer manifold to the older v8s. I've seen a video on YouTube where a guy with an 04 DC has done it and lists it along with his other power mods. You can buy it from Dirty Deeds Industries.
