Temporary Hype or Long Term Value

Yeah, taxes in the county I live in are higher, but only because it's "richer". Pff, I rent in the trailerhood so it doesn't affect me anymore, but I don't like it. And its $75 each to register all 3 my vehicles. Even though combined value of all 3 is maybe $7500.

 

I know, I'm just being an ass. It's all I'm good at anymore.

 

It's looking that way. When everything is factored in, I'm thinking we would need a household raise of around 20% to keep the same standard of living. Maybe more.

 

The only reason I'd move from texas is to go to TN. They're comparable in taxes iirc. But yeah, you're always welcome here in TX.

 

Well, near as I can tell it's mostly about where specifically you live. If you live in rural areas your taxes are not crazy...if you live in suburban/urban areas they can be...especially if schools are important to you. We are looking for a place with balance.

We currently live ITP (https://www.knowatlanta.com/feature-stories-on-atlanta/itp-vs-otp/) where we have the good fortune of having extremely high taxes AND shitty schools...you either send your kids to private schools or you home-school them...we are lucky in that my wife was a middle school science teacher for 10 years with a masters in education and decided to stay home with the kids. Because schools are shitty here there is a huge secular home school community here which has been great...but we plan on putting the kids in school if we move to the PNW...we'll see. Sorry for the thread hijack.

 

I lived in Seattle (Everett specifically) while in the navy. Beautiful up there, but no thanks. Too dreary, too much opposite political views from what I like. I wanna say property taxes on our house we had was about 2.5k on a 180k house with 1 acre. And excellent schools.

 

Sounds like you did your homework. The other thing that gets compounded are things like going out to eat and these special grocery tax zones. Because cost of business and everyone being taxed to the hilt it snowballs into everything else discretionary spending wise.

The way I look at it:

The $6k money on ‘mods’ spent this year and a half on reinvestment went straight into this old truck versus buying a new turd gen and the $6k disappearing into local tax coffers via personal prop tax. Plus, I’m not stuck with a $600+/month loan payment. Sticking it to the man!

The 2002 Tundra is ‘only’ a few hundred a year now that its depreciated.

 

Hey I'm all for it! It does take a lot hustling and moving your ass but it can be done. There has only been one bike that I broke even on but I sold it fast so I could buy something else to make more money on lol. I've got two more that are ready to go next spring!

Here is an example, today I bought some almost brand new Goodyear Duratrac's LT265/75/16's for $600. They have about 800 miles on them and had some Toyota Tacoma wheels mounted on them. He was originally asking $900 a few weeks ago when I contacted him but he said he had someone already coming to get them. Well that passed and he contacted me yesterday saying the guy finally showed up and only offered him $250 lol. We talked for a bit and I told him I only needed the tires, not the wheels. He said tires only, I could have them for $600. Today I am headed that way to pick them up and he said he doesn't have time to get them dismounted and I could have the entire set for $600 since he is tired of moving them around. I post my old tires for sale for $350, have four people in line to buy them and whatever I can get for the wheels ($150-$200) leaves me shelling out $50-$100 of my own cash for some almost new Duratrac's. It takes time and you have to be patient. Always be willing to walk from a deal and wait for another.

 

From my experience you have to be both patient and diligent on your hunt for a 1st gen tundra. I bought mine in April of 2018 after searching for about two year for the right one. I bought mine just south of Albuquerque,NM with no rust 5” ruff county lift 18” wheels and 35” tires and only 105k miles for $8500. Wish you luck.

 

SC is not capped at $500... ask me how I know. Maybe my state pptax is capped at $500, but I paid over $800 for our pilot in its first year. Don’t remind me I haven’t paid the Tundra first year. I live in Greenville county.

 

Presumably a certain modest attitude as well.

I also feel the same about the size. Really the perfect truck. 2 years ago I wanted to upgrade my reliable 2000 tundra 2 wd V6. Want something with a V8 and 4 wd. Had a good budget so looked at different trucks. And could not find anything I would be as happy with.
So found a 2003 SR5 under 100K miles but was clearly a work truck. First time splurged and made what would normally be considered a bad financial decision. I mean on anyother vechicle I would never put so much into it considering the book value. Put 10K more into it and nothing really major mechanical besides the timing belt. Just new interior upholstery and carpet, new stock color paint, new tires and rims, new tailgate, new tail and headlights, new oem interior door panels, spray on bed liner, Retrax bed cover. Maybe a few other things.

I would have gladly bought a brand new one if they still made the first gen. tundra. So ended up as close as I could. Buy a old one and use the money to make it look new. I could not be happier. And I like driving this and choose this the most often. And I also have a LS460 sitting in the garage. The tundra is just the perfect size, power, visibility, road feel and response that seems made for what I like.
