Now that is the true true. Used cars are not for people who have to go the mechanic. First gens are a great value for the DIY guy....not really for anyone else.

 

I can see good points in both of those. Let me contend with this: cold fried chicken the next morning for breakfast. It's up there, if not above, cold pizza.

 

Not unlike XJ jeep Cherokees. I'm not sure why it took me so long to see the similarities. Both have known to be strong engines and trans (the 4.0/aw4), both have some frame issues (being that the xj doesn't have one), both can go 200k with a little love, but both will kill you getting there if you can't turn a wrench.
Makes me miss my XJ. I honestly think that might be my next fun vehicle after I sell my prerunner. An XJ with a 5.3v8, a linked rear, lots of unibody reinforcement, and some nice shocks... Too bad the Tundra won't tow an XJ on a trailer very well.

 

I have read the 12 hole injectors really improve the towing performance. I don't remember the member but he tows a boat and explained the difference was tremendous

I'm sure it helps and it is on my list, but a built 4,000lbs XJ and a heavy trailer at about 2,000lbs can't fight physics. With my 35" tires and other junk that would make me fully f#@kin loaded. Maybe it would do alright with 4.88 gears for towing that weight though. I just might have to try this setup if all goes to plan. Although life rarely goes to plan.

 

I had 35's on my 01 and 4.56 gears made a huge difference in every way possible. 4.88 would definitely be a step in the right direction

 

This has not been my experience, my '07 had 270k when I purchased it and it wasn't expensive to pay others including the dealer to wrench on it. I shopped around for deals, and did what I could myself.

 

This is my M.O. now that my hand model career is coming to a long and victorious end.

Still keep the money makers in good shape by paying others to do the knuckle bangers, but save some money on the easy stuff at the same time.

I am not a mechanically inclined when it comes to truck/car repairs, but never thought of not considering a used truck purchase due to lack of repair experience.

 

Any shops are you do it locally? by the time I buy the product and spend the time ... a local off-road shop runs a Black Friday special every year for $100 to fluid film the frame and chassis. He buys the stuff in 55 gal drums and can pass the savings along .. otherwise that $40 a gallon is a good price, usually it’s $50 +\- at places

 

People always say vehicles/motorcycles are a bad investment.. I am living walking proof that they are not. You have to buy them at the right price and at the right time. I’m the type of person that I change vehicles like I do socks. This year alone, I’ve had five motorcycles and four vehicles. I buy cheap and sell at the peak.

I bought my 2000 AC Limited 4x4 with 170k for $2900. I know it’s worth north of $5000 from what I have been seeing in Colorado. I think it books for $5900. I plan on keeping it for awhile but who knows. I’ll probably get the itch to finally build my LS turbo truck.

The GMT-800 platform (‘99-‘07 classic) 1500 series trucks are tanks. The LS series engines are bullet proof. I bought my ‘03 Tahoe Z71 with 130k on it for $2700. I drove it for over a year, fixed a few things and sold it $5000. Same thing with my ‘05 Silverado 1500 Z71 I bought earlier this year. Bought it for $2500, drove it for a few months and sold it for $4500. They are a great platform and just flat out reliable. Parts are cheap, readily available and they are easy to work on.

The first gen tundras are no different. There is a reason why you see so many with over 300k on the original engine/transmission. The japs have it figured out. They lack the upgraded technology, they aren’t power houses but man do they run forever. Honda’s are no different.

Check around, see what similar vehicles are selling for. This will help you to see what you should be paying. The thing is, you have to check often and have cash ready to go. I had to jump on my Tundra as it priced low and I knew it would go fast. I even took an Uber to the location since I couldn’t find anyone to ride with me. Just keep an eye out, be patient and the right one will come along. Don’t be afraid to make an offer and don’t be afraid to walk away.

In some states and/or localities they have a personal property tax (PPT) and you get taxed yearly on registered vehicles amongst other things...

‘Assessed Value’ and registration.

All personal property has a value. That value is taxed even after you’ve bought it new and paid tax at that time. The personal property tax never goes away, but it does reduce over time each year, as the investment depreciates.

Here is a fun factoid: The tax is not pro-rated so if you buy on the last day of tax period then you pay full amount for that year. Hahahahaa

Tn is a great tax state...that is why you are getting so many retirees the last few years (my wife's family is from Cocke County). Ga, though in the south, is not great IMHO (though it's better than VA/MD which are my home states). There used to be a yearly PPT tax on vehicles, but they changed that to a one-time title tax (TATV) you pay every time you title a vehicle. Prior to that you paid sales tax on any vehicle purchase from a dealer (but not if you bought it from a private individual) and the yearly PPT tax...now you just pay a TATV every time you title a vehicle in your name.

 

Yes, I've heard GA taxes out the ass for vehicle registration. I'm about to renew my tags, it's $60 for my special plate, $32 for a standard plate. My property taxes on my $280,000 home are around $1,500 year. If I wasn't in the city limits they would only be ~$750. I know you're planning a move to PNW. We're wanting to do the same(or maybe Utah/CO). But the more research I do, the less appealing it is. I don't know how the working class lives out there. Maybe just skating by without being able to save anything...?
