Help me pick tires: Oem TRDs, 6112s with shims

Hello looking for some advice to upgrade my ‘18 that’s running 6112s, 2/1 shims with 5160 and shackles in back. Looking for an aggressive appearing larger tire that’s good for all weather conditions here in New England. I like the tread patterns on the BFGs. I am running stock ‘19 TRD PRO rims currently.

I see a lot of recommendations I’m going cross eyed at this point. What’s should I get? Thanks in advance!

 

I too was into the bfg ko2s but looked into the falken wildpeaks at3w. Great reviews and cheaper than the bfgs.

 

Will def add those to the list. I’m hoping these tires would be in stock at Costco’s or townfair tire

 

295/70/18 is the most common size for a level, stock 18” wheel. Albeit, that really is the only size available for an 18” wheel that you can clear with just a 2” level.

 

Thanks guys appreciate the input. So the 295/70/18 is around a 34inch tire. How much taller will that put me?

Doesn’t seem like that’s much larger then stock. I’ll have to see some in person.

 

Stock is 32”. The width of the tire is what dramatically improves the “beefiness” look of the tire.

 

Check out the Yokohama Geolander MTs I’ve got them on mine about 5000 miles on them wearing good. They are good on wet pavement and good in the mud.

 

I've been happy with BFG's AT ko2 & MT km2, general grabber AT & Falkens wildpeak AT. I'm currently running 295/70r18's but for about the same ching you can run a 285/75r18....34.8"er. That's what I'd do on a leveled rig. Cheers ​

 

I like my bfgs as well .. just checked them the other day they’re at 20k miles have been rotated 3 times and have 11-12 / 32 all four corners. I leave them at 48 psi up front 46 in the rear

I have 275/70/r18 Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrains on truck now. Not leveled yet but soon. They look great and have handled very well. Quite on the road and are eating the snow I’ve been having for breakfast. Very happy so far. I’m sure they would look good in a larger size too. Price jump to go up more was huge!

 

I’ve been running Cooper Discovery Maxx ST 295/70 R18 on my 16’ and my ‘17 Tundra. 3/1 leveling kit. Currently the tires have 45,000 miles and had I rotated them the last few oil changes I’m sure I could have squeezed out another 10,000. Every winter I drive in Southern Colorado and Northern NM in horrible road conditions and they’ve been great in snow, rain and sand. I’m happy with the size too. For the last twenty years I’ve always had BFG AT but never got the mileage out of them. My job replaces my tires for company use so it didn’t bother me at the time.

 

Thanks for all the input guys I really appreciate it! There are a lot of different tire brands out there that fit the bill. Lastly I have factory install fender flares and the stock tire is def tucked in the wheel well. Is the 295/70/18 still recommended? Would a small spacer be acceptable?

 

I’ve seen plenty of other people’s trucks with a similar set up and haven’t heard about any issues. Hopefully some one will chime in. 295/70 in my opinion looks great on our trucks but going 35’s next week. Coopers are 34.2” I believe.

 

LT285/55/20 .. D rated. there’s only a couple sizes in the 20 inch platform that are D rated, most are E rated, but difference of 65 max psi vs 80 psi

should edit this to say these are the BFG A/T K02 because like someone posted above there are M/T versions as well

 

I have spent the last week reading my brain dead about tires. Getting 6112s/5160 installed next week at 1.9” with toytec aal.

With this setup we ultimately have 2 size options bigger than stock without trimming, both of which only come in load range E on every single tire I’ve found.

275/70r18 which is 33.2” height and 10.8” width

285/70r18 which is 33.7” height and 11.2” width


The second size is extremely appealing to me but the closest thing to an all terrain you can get in a 285/70r18 is a Nitto Ridgegrappler or Exo Grappler (hybrid tires) otherwise it’s only mud tires in that size.

I want to keep my mpgs as high as possible but still have an aggressive looking tire that does well on/off-road and in snowy/wet conditions.

Here’s what I’ve narrowed my choices down to for the 275/70r18

Cooper Discoverer at3 xlt
Falken Wildpeak at3w
Toyo Open Range AT


These 3 are ultimately the only all terrain tires I actually can’t find any complaints or downfalls to. Personally I’m feeling pretty ready to jump the gun on the Falkens

 

I had a set of BFG KO2s a while back - I loved the look and ride but they just didn’t perform well on wet pavement and were average in the snow. I live in VA so snow wasn’t much of a problem but they weren’t great on wet pavement. I ran them about 40-42 psi.

My next set I’m going to try the Falken Wildpeaks, read a lot of good reviews and they are cheaper!

 

@Doylfish : Rgr on the D-rated. I saw 46psi & remembered when I ran my 275's & 295's @ that pressure...felt like my fillings were rattling out. Mine were E's tho. Wish I could have found a D rated tire for my current setup.

@Primalbryan : I ran 275/70 Wildpeaks (O.G. tread) for about 40k on stock suspension....no rubbing, great tire. They still had quite a bit of tread left too. I've been a Falken fanboy since '06 (street cars), so take my advice with a grain of salt

 

Echoing what others here have said, I ran the KO2 on my last truck. I never felt they handled very well in wet conditions. Perhaps the rubber compound is too hard? They were OK in the snow.

The Cooper AT3 XLT had my eye, however, I have read some reviews on this forum stating that their snow performance is lacking. Being in the northeast, you should research that some as us think you'll want a great snow tire.

 

did you have to use spacers to clear the UCA?

 

How are they on dry pavement, are they loud.?

 

After all that research I ended up buying some Goodyear Ultra Terrains, fantastic tire. 275/70r18 on stock suspension, no rubbing no trimming. Getting 6112 installed at 1.9” today though.

 

They are great on dry & wet pavement have not had them in any substantial snow yet. They do clean good in the mud and traction is great in the mud. They are noisy but not as bad as the BFG mud terrains that I use to run only got about 5000 miles on them and they still look new no signs of wear yet. Overall I’d buy these again they are just as good as the BFG mud terrains which had been the only tire I’ve ever ran in the past 20+ years and a lot cheaper.

 

I did as well. Snow performance has been great. I’m on stock suspension but about to add 1.5” spacers. Will level at 1.3” with 6112 next year. Cause I’m lazy and don’t want to reupload the pictures here’s the link to my thread on the UltraTerrains

If MPGs are a concern be sure to compare tire weights.

falkens WP AT3’s are a great tire, perform well in wet & snow and some trail stuff (my wife’s 4R is running them) but they are HEAVY. Generally 5lbs or so more in the same size as other comparable ATs (Cooper, BFG, Toyos etc..)
