Hey Toyota...What happened to my tiny light for cup holder/console area?

Once again....its the little things you miss that annoy.

On my 2008 Tundra CM Limited.....there was a tiny amber LED light at the end of the center console that lit up this cup holder console area. Not too brite- not too dim...just right for seeing where the hell your drink( hot coffee) was placed at night on a dark interstate.

    Fast forward.....
2019 Tundras....you yank this convenience out?
Why? Because some bean counter decided it saved the company 20 bucks per unit not to install?
Anyone have a hack/mod to share?

I am thinking about adding one. Drill a tiny hole in center console for a low power LED and connect to cigarette lighter inside the center console.
    or
some cars have a LED at the base of the rear view mirror. Not sure if you can open and drill a tiny hole and there is power in the mirror.

I have had 5 Toyota products and currently in a 2006 Land Cruiser, looking to get into a new Tundra. But the way Toyota keeps nickel and diming us, but removing hand holds from left side, left driver seat back pocket, this issue, ... it makes you wonder if they ever care what the customer wants anymore. AND dont even get me started on that nightmare of a Tacoma. Underpowered, roofline too low, transmission is about 400 revs too far to the right. im losing confidence in toyota but the day. Is it too much to ask for a decent truck motor for the Tacoma, with seat that are not set in the floor, or a roof line that won't cramp my head, and Im only 5'10". and disk brakes in the rear, maybe a 6 foot bed with 4 door. THEN it would be easier for people to overland and camp in it, some for the Tundra. I honestly wonder just who they talk to when they design new trucks?? Are they all sand dune running high school boys or do they take to middle America too. Come on toyota, I retire from the AF next year and will be glad to give you a dose of what real America wants@

Dual Zone H/AC, Lights in ALL FOUR Door Bottoms, Dual Glove-Box, Adjustable Console, Amber Flashers/Signals, Driver's Side Grab Handle + Illuminated Ignition Ring. All standard equipment in my 2010 SR5. How long before Toyota drops the Hood Struts and goes back to a Prop Rod? Doesn't seem like they're serious about competing in the full size truck market.

I will add removing power folding side mirrors from the Limited trim as well. I do miss the ambient light too. Even the higher trim levels have become bare bones, our trucks are pretty savage.

Traded my '03 sr5 ac tundra for a '16 sr5 a few years ago. I really miss the dual sun visors, the driver's side grab handle, the courtesy lights in the doors. I had to add the illuminated ignition ring light and swapped out the flasher to get rid of the DRL, that's what headlights are for! But, I love that 5.7!

I rode in my buddy's new 2019 CM the other day. Compared to my 2008 DC, it has a bunch of features removed and almost all the storage areas deleted. Pretty sure my DC has more room to store stuff internally even though I have a shorter cab. I found it pretty hilarious.

GM has done the exact same thing in their new trucks. Can't even get bucket seats in the volume trims any more. They put a different bench seat in the lowest trims that has no storage to try to push you into a more expensive truck. No fog lamps on the value trims and if you want to add them yourself the dealer has to reflash the ECU for you.

I'd say Toyota isn't doing that badly. I got all the features I want and need in an SR5 and it was almost $10k CAD less than a Silverado LT that was missing a few things would have been and $20k CAD less than a Sierra Elevation with all the features I actually wanted.

It's true that Toyota took out bunch of old standard equipment ... However they added cheap interior plastic at no additional cost. So we must not complain!

Yep, it's a joke; just not a funny joke. More "nannies" added every year but common sense features that actually make a difference are deleted.

Not even any trim covers to clean up the seat brackets conspicuously bolted to the floor.

it’s one thing to trim down fleet vehicles. It’s quite another to remove features from higher consumer grade trim levels. All while the competition continues to further refine themselves. The tundra really has become a complete joke. It’s the equivalent to a Honda Civic with a bed.

Most of what I considered 'lacking' on my 2010, I re-engineered/re-designed myself, (quite the long list) Those trim covers are available from E-Bay... of course they wouldn't fit but some 'coaxing' with my Heat Gun+ strategically placed black tape fixed 'em:D

I bought the Tundra after comparing the F150 XLT trim level. I was amazed at the things you could not get, even as options (like Homelink) in a $50,000 truck.

I've owned alot of vehicles over the years and the Tundra is the only one that I would rather own an older model of. I was really surprised to see on this board how many 3rd gen trucks were missing features that I have on my 08 Limited.

I'd love to be able to hack the freaking power window and door lock switches. I can't believe they didn't illuminate those.

Yesterday I was at my 10,000 check up and sat in a Tacoma Pro
I can say I am glad I dont have to drive one.
I had a 2011 that I should have kept. I do miss it.

The Tundra is nicer than the Fords and Dodges I looked at. I used to be a Chevy guy (Cars only, never owned a truck except to take the four bolt main out)

I still dont get the no pull up bar and the lack of the seat slot on the drivers side.
I would love to put a few things in mine that the Tacoma had.

Oh, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro didn't even have power seats and I watched a guy buy one.
How the fuck do you not have power seats in your flagship Tacoma?

The TRD rav 4 is a joke

My tundra peeve both gen 2 and gen 3 is no indicator on the dash for fog lights on. Small gripe but all my other Toyotas have had it. I added factory fog light turn signal stalk and fog lights to my 2nd gen with anytime fog light mod only to find there is no indicator for them! I should have just used the cheepie push button switch that came with it and not waste my time and expense on pulling the steering wheel for the clean factory install. Saggy dash boards along the windshield too but you can go through and add foam to prop it up level and eliminate the rattles.

Exactly the reason I bought my 08. Apart from getting a good deal, it is the same truck as the new ones and has tons more storage! Drivers side grab handle, courtesy lights in all 4 doors, overhead storage, dual glove boxes, side storage pockets in each front door, and the illuminated cup holder area light thing, illuminated key slot (not really a big deal just something to note). They removed so much storage from the “3rd” gen it’s insane. And I use all that storage. Sunglasses for me and my wife go up in the roof console, as does my badge for work. Top glove box is my wife’s domain, bottom glove box is for me. Odds and ends go in the drivers door pocket that I use on a regular basis....hair ties and Bobby pins go in the passenger side door. Keeps everything nice and organized.

A small gooseneck cigarette lighter light would illuminate that area without much fuss. I have on of these little rechargeable flashlights in my cigarette lighter at the front of the center console. The light glows red when charging and green when charged. Enough light to see that area in the dark, and I can always hit the switch on it to really light up the area. Good to have in an emergency too. But yea, to come up with this stuff that used to be 'standard' bugs me. I miss the secondary visor. In my '02, when I moved the visor down and to the left side to block the sun, there was that second flip-down visor that folded down over the front still. I have light blue eyes and yea the sun is a struggle; (I am a vampire when it comes to the sun) and that simple extra visor made a big difference. I would put one on if someone made one... (and I see someone else mentioned this already, must be another vampire ;)

I'll never grasp why they removed the grab handle from the driver's side on the Tundra. My Limited Tundra has no power controls for the passenger seat. My 2003 sr5 Sequoia has freaking powered passenger seats and a driver's side grab handle! If this really irks you please don't look at your non illuminated power mirror controls and door locks.

A bit bright so I cover the sides with black electrical tape. Plug into the USB port

Toyota's excuse is "removed for safety reasons." Someone hit their head on it, either in an accident or while entering/exiting. Look at the fiasco after a drunk-ass CHP officer piled floor mats around the gas and brake pedals, causing every waste of skin to see a free payday....INCLUDING the bought & paid for Transportation Secretary, in the 8 year "anointed-one's" term. Toyota is more than happy to sell it's customers that $10 piece of plastic for a 5-700% mark-up though!

On the 5.0, They have moved to a plastic oil pan and plastic transmission pan. No oil drain bolt, it’s a plastic plug that’s pulled in / out by hand

but... so has Porsche and even some big diesel engines have gone this way too, so they aren’t alone...

I’m still liking my tundra compared to others. Yes I miss some things like remote start on a 2019! My 2014 Ram had that.

We are all victims of what the auto industry refers to as "de-contenting" and it will continue forever. Every manufacturer works constantly to reduce costs of manufacturing vehicles, and Toyota is no exception. This "officially" started at Toyota in 1995 with the "new" Tacoma, which was much simpler to build and had many fewer parts. Then came the 1997 Camry, which also contained many fewer parts. Unfortunately, many things we like wind up on the cutting board, as the bean counters really do run the factories. Removing one part that costs a nickel results in a big savings (for Toyota) over time. Get used to it.
