So I got back to work today and I got a Christmas present from the company, a $500 gift card to use at Amazon.com. I was already thinking about getting a nav system, so now I will!

I want good, up to date topo-maps. I don't mind the road conditions and stuff, but that is not my priority. Marked forest roads and trails are more important to me.

Anybody with first hand knowledge or experience please give me a shout!

Garmin products. There are boatloads of maps available online to load, and Open Street Maps play nice on Garmins.

I've had good experiences so far with garmins and am leaning that direction. I have one really capable hand held called an Oregon that lets you insert regional data cards with 15min Topo maps.
So far I've not been able to find out if the big screen automobile navigation models are compatible with the Topo cards or down loads. If so, that would resolve the question!

I'm far from an expert(I only have 7 Garmins), but what I know from reading several GPS forums, that would be a 'no'.

That's a bummer, life sure has some awkward twists and turns. Somehow I guess I will cope with this.

    None, yet....
Buy an iPad mini with a ram mount and download the leadnav app for Offroad maps. For onroad maps, there are plenty of apps available for free and with the iPad wifi, the gps is still active even without a cell signal.

At the end of the day, you still have an iPad to use inside your truck that doubles as entertainment and navigation. You should be able to cover all of that with a $500 gift card.

    You're welcome!

If your wanting an in car navigation without an additional unit can't you just download scout gps app. that will work through your phone but still display in your truck. That's what I have been using, sometimes it does give stupid directions but for the most part seems to work well. I do keep a spare garmin with me just incase that has topo maps on it.

Do you have a link to what you are referring to? And how does your GPA link to your phone and your truck?

I don't know enough about the tundras yet to tell you what years it will work on but I have a 2016 sr5 with the trd package no gps on the truck unit.
heres the link to the gps app on google app store. make sure its the one with the circle with the arrow in it. the other scout ones don't work.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.telenav.app.android.scout4cars&hl=en

after I downloaded it I just started the app when my phone was connected to the car and it installed on the console. once I did that I could make a custom screen to have the gps on the home screen and type locations into the search option. you can set home and work look back at previous found locations and such. one thing to note is you need to have the app active on your phone for it to work on the console otherwise you get a tether error. I think you can actually pay to download maps not sure how this affects the functionality with the guidance system yet still haven't tried it. But it is a free app.

Do you put that mount on the little rubber mat on the dash and don't have any problems with it moving? I have been looking for a mount but don't like the window cups.

This response has been great! I now have several avenues in need of more research. Thanks to everyone for the ideas.
If the scout gps app won't work I'll probably go with the iPad mini idea. My truck is a '15 Pro which is built on the SR5 platform.

I have used Garmin for pushing 20 years on boats, cars and ATV. They are my go to. Amazing how many off pavement roads are shown. I just ordered the Proclip mount because I don't like using the windshield and New Orleans streets are like being off pavement making bean bag mounts ineffective. FYI I have factory navigation but still use my Garmin Nuvi.

I am looking for topographic maps showing contour lines and elevations. I am not sure, but this does not seem to be an option on any Garmin except the hand-helds. I have one of the best of these that Garmin makes (called an Oregon) but want a bigger screen for the truck showing these maps. Streets and rd conditions are not the goal. Its nice stuff but not what I'm after. I wonder why Garmin does not make units that do both? or, do they? I may call them direct and ask.

This App does not mention any access to topo maps. You mention a, "spare Garmin... that has topo maps on it" is this a hand held? or a big screen unit?

I missed the topo need. I don't think Garmin does what you want at least not "stock". You might try the overlanding sites like Expedition Portal. Those guys would be a good place to find info like this.

    2nd the iPad mini route.

Check out Gaia GPS for some good Topos. Some buddies use it for snowmobiling. We've used it for mtb. Pretty great app.

Yep, I've got Gaia loaded on my iPhone. Works great. I think the suggestion to get the iPad mini is the direction I'm going. There is lots of good apps and maps!

Yeah it's a pretty powerful app and piece of hardware. For "on-road" Nav I'd also recommend NAVIGON. Downloadable maps no data required. Lifetime updates. Pretty good turn by turn (better than the entune, imo).

How about changing out the stock head unit and replace it with an after market (kenwood or Pioneer) that is android or apple compatible. I have a Garmin GPS but my IPhone and/or android (with apps) are enough for my direction needs when paired with my NEX4200.

My opinion and experience leads me to want to leave as many systems of the tundra original and unchanged as possible. The more complex and sophisticated the system is the more likely to be compromised and irretrievably damaged. Reading forum posts for a while will support this. I'm planning to ride this truck into the sunset and want it to last me 20 years or more.
I've already made changes to the suspension but this is not overly complicated and not dissimilar to what they were 40 years ago. Younger and smarter folks may make the kind of change that you suggest but I lack the confidence.

Thanks to the feedback I have decided on the IPad mini. I could go with the friction mount, but wondered who has used other mounts. When you google 'em, you get a zillion hits! I would like to use the useless most forward cup holder but am not sure any of the mounts would clear the overhanging part of the dash. Has anyone found a satisfactory mount that will withstand the movement and vibration of offroad travel?

Check into the RAM mounts. I use them in my jeep and I am what you consider a hardcore desert and trail crawler.

There are also some other more serious iPad mounts that you can look into, but those get up to $200+ with solid steel construction and dust prevention. It's what you would see if Baja or Ultra4 racers.

Any combination of RAM mounts should work for you though, Plenty strong and not too terribly expensive.
