I hate that the speedometer on these trucks is so hard to read in a lot of lighting conditions. So I took a $33 risk and ordered a cheapo OBD2/GPS HUD. It's a little laggy but not terrible and more than usable. Nice and bright. We will see how long it lasts but so far it's real nice to be able to see my speed so much better.

Looks fancy. Hope it lasts for you. If my little screen is too hard to ready, I just look at my needle. :notsure: I guess there could be a glare that made it hard to see that too, but I like the look of that HUD.

2014-2017 screens don't show speed - the needle is all you have. Please post a link. My wife's Denali has a HUD and it is awesome on the highway; especially when there is a ton of traffic.

Aaaah. I did not know that the displays were different. This makes more sense now. I feel dumb. :smack:

Yep, Almost the 1st thing I noticed when I got mine is no back lighting and thought there was an issue till I read up. Most cars actually back light stronger during the day and dim down somewhat when you turn on the lights. o_O

I have a 2018 Platinum which has the screen readout, but recently drove my hunting buddies 2016 1794 from the Bay Area to Hutchinson Kansas and back. He drove about two of the 27 hours. The lack of a digital readout for speed drove me nearly mad after being used to mine. The needle is off center and usually I have to crane my neck to see I'm going 80 mph

Yeah, have it in a Fusion company car and have gotten used to it. Got in the truck and pulled out on the highway with a 65mph at the end of our road. Was accelerating up to speed and looked and saw Johnny Law. Was damn near 10 over and took me a couple of seconds to read the speedo. That could have been a mess.

It is not just the speedometer but all the gauges. They are almost impossible to see when wearing sunglasses. The easy solution would be to have the instrument lights come on with the engine running. I figured someone on here would have figured out how to make that happen. I emailed and called Toyota customer service but they were oblivious to the problem. They told me to turn the trip odometer knob. This was even after trying to explain to them that was not the issue.

The signal from the headlight switch to turn the cluster lights on comes from the CAN bus. I tried injecting my own signal to light up the cluster with all the headlights turned off. It worked for a few seconds until the body control module sent a factory programmed CAN message saying the lights were off which overrode mine.

So then I took my extra cluster apart and solders the switch together on the board that is controlled by the CAN. This fixed it except now my cluster lights are on full bright 100% of the time when the key comes on and the dimmer doesn’t work anymore. I need to remap the pins of the switch and see if I can “jump” it to have the lights on 100% of the time but the dimmer working also.

Watch here: Notice as soon as I turn the power supply on (turn the key on) the cluster lights are lit up even thought the cluster knows the headlights are off.

Also this was my solution to a digital speedometer instead of a cheap Amazon one. It just uses the same CAN speed signal that runs the needle gauge but displays it digitally on a screen I mounted in the cluster. It is still very much a work in progress as I add other values to the display.

    FB8AF7A6-BFB2-463E-96AC-CC263172030C.jpg

I could code a 3.5 inch or even smaller or bigger display to show digital speed very easyily. Then just mount it to the windshield like a GPS, plug the cable into the DLC. My display even dims it’s self when it sees the headlights come on for night driving. It gets data directly from the trucks ecu so it refreshes much faster than the ODB2 apps like Torque ect. Could also easily program in different size tire setup ect.
