i know it’s only april and there’s still a ton of snow lying around but, is anyone ready to break out the big bikes? probably going to start making some runs up to valmont to shake out the cobwebs.

my schedule is a little wonky so, like skiing, i’m usually riding solo. it’d be great to meet up with some colorado peeps for some days at winter park and keystone this summer. let’s make it happen.

if anyone wants to meet at valmont, i’m up for that too.

I know I know. I want to go. Kamloops is one of my favourite places to ride. Especially in the spring before it’s dries out. Everything is perfect loam and no dust

nah, valmont bike park in boulder. pump tracks, slalom course, slopestyle, jump lines. it's a pretty awesome spot and incredibly well maintained. i'm getting old for massive hucks but it keeps me comfortable in the air to deal with most of the drops and tabletops on the trails at keystone and winter park.

    what did you get?

Sounds awesome. I’m getting old for Hucks too. Just getting into it. Grew up bmxing and need another reason to get outside and excited. I got a 2016 Norco Aurum carbon 7.1. 27.5 wheels and all the new tech. It feels like a rocket. Can’t believe how much of the a difference the geometry makes for going down a mountain.

rad. i've got a yeti 303rdh. fox 40 up front and a cane creek out back. it just soaks up everything. would love to upgrade to a new dh sled but it's hard to justify it. what i have does everything i need it to even if it is a tank.

i didn't get to ride at all last summer due to my hand surgeries. kinda chomping at that bit to get back to it.

Nice. That’s a while then. My thumb is partially why I’m not going this weekend. Had right thumb surgery in late December. Had to pin my thumb back into the socket and anchor my thumb tendons back to the bone with screws. It’s still very weak and sore. I can relate to the hand surgery blues unfortunately

yea, carpal tunnel and trigger finger relief. had one hand done then 5 or 6 weeks later, they did the other side. my hand strength is just now back to 100%. all i can offer is, be religious with whatever PT exercises you've been given. i've got a one of these in every color and they've been super helpful.

I'm not too old for hucks, but I'm too beat up for it. I have nothing in between my shoulder ball and shoulder socket. A good hit there and it's shoulder replacement time for me. Rather not do that. It was a "I'll deal with it later" mentality that got me to this point of a messed up knee, messed up shoulder and messed up lower back. I guess it's "later" and I'm dealing with it now. I'll still rock black diamonds on a snowboard, but I'm stuck on blues and bypassing huge things on blacks on a MTB.

Dang... Reading this thread, I REALLY need to get back on the DH bike. I think it's been almost 2 years now since it started collecting dust! Used to me my main ride!!!

I have an '08 Intense M6 that I re-badged with Banshee stickers (just to make people go :gossip::confused:)
Up front I'm rocking an '03 888, but I had it gutted and upgraded with Avalanche internals with a CCDB out back. Surely does NOT have modern geometry (66 degree HT), but it gets me around. I'm not a jumper or hucker, but I can get down just about any track with it. Probably bc I've been downhilling since 1999!!

Here's a DH Bike blast from the past list:
-1st DH bike was a 1999 Ellsworth Dare - Snapped that frame within about 2 years (of course)
-Then moved to a Schwinn Straight-8 with the PULL shock. It was an awesome bike (progressive linkage and floating rear brake), but the pull shock kinda limited upgrades so I eventually sold it. My buddy was rocking the Yeti Straight-8 at the time. Same bike but w/ regular shock...
-From there I moved to a SantaCruz V-10 that I rode the snot out of for about 8 years. Again, proprietary rear axle (18mm? 20 mm?) led to its demise.
-In 2013 I bought the used Intense M6 (2008). This one has seen limited action though, as I started having kids (3 now) and my guys -DH trips went by the way-side.

I've ridden all over North America though!!
Northstar (my old stomping ground when I lived in the bay area)
    Bass Lake
    Mammoth
    BigBear
    Bootleg Canyon (NV)

I used to ride a 2005 Norco Rampage. More of a freeride bike but I'd bomb downhill on it all the time. I recently found a box with some of my old armor and full face helmet. Kinda makes me want to check out the local hill but my current Rockhopper isnt well suited to that riding. :(

I used to have an Evil Imperial. The most useless thing on earth. Marzocchi 888 on a hardtail.

This has Super Monsters on it, but you get the idea. (not mine)

To help with the winter blues and continue my progress, I build a manual balance stand for me and a couple my riding buds. Let me tell you (from a newbs point of view) this is hard af! Obviously I need the balance practice! This bike is miles longer and bigger than my old bmx haha. Cheers!

Upgraded my rear spring to a Kronos titanium :) I needed to drop a spring rate for proper sag so started looking. I saw this near mint, used one on Pinkbike for a killer deal and made it happen. I’m getting plugs installed on my forks as well during the winter service. Pretty excited to give it all a try next season. I’m assuming it’s going to be a completely different ride with proper sag. :headbang:

Ah well it’s easy to top that one next year then isn’t it? I loved my first dh season. I’m seriously addicted. Hence, the manual balance stand you can see I built. So stoked for 2020!

That's awesome! I want to build one as well. My manual skills are in the toilet after so many years off from riding. I'll probably have one built for next winter, hopefully to use with an upgraded bike.

Currently, my rear tire has been swapped out for the trainer tire and the bike's now mounted in my TacX trainer for the winter.
