Pre-2018 non tow package vs 2019 with tow package

    I just purchased a 2019 Tundra with the tow package. There have been threads about people concerned about the removal of the external transmission cooler and rightfully so. Reading through the thread people have posted temps much higher than those with the external cooler with just normal driving. I have been thinking about how many of thousands of Tundras before 2019 have been made without the the tow package and no external cooler, and have been wondering how the temps of a non tow package pre 2019 compare to a post 2019 with the tow package. Personally I have no plans to tow anything and don't really feel worried about not having the external cooler considering many without the tow package have not had any issues. Any thoughts on this? Has anyone compared the temps between non tow package Tundras vs the new tow package Tundras under normal driving conditions? I think this would put a lot at ease if the temps are the same or better between the two.

    I find it funny that on the specs of my truck and on the window sticker it clearly states " Tow package with engine oil and transmission cooler"
    The only transmission cooler is the heat exchanger on the side of the transmission

    I thought the transmission fluid is cooled in the same radiator as the coolant?

    Now the coolant is circulating to the heat exchanger at the transmission, not the transmission fluid to the radiator.

    I honestly don't know.
    My "tow package " cooler on the side of the transmission looks like a non "tow package " from prior to 19
    Next time i see my service rep, i am going to ask what he knows

    There is no 4.6 anymore but I was more inquiring as to how the tranny fluid is cooled in the non tow package models vs tow package models.

    UPDATE: I dont think a non tow package model actually exists since they did away with the 4.6. So I guess the question would be how are the 4.6 Trannys cooled compared to the 5.7 without the external tranny cooler.

    For clarity, the can on the side of the transmissions is more ATF warmer than cooler. That device can never cool the ATF lower than engine coolant temperature or about 195 degrees.

    Since all Tundras sold since 2006 have that same style warmer/cooler, you can be confident that your transmission will last a long time in daily service...unless you're towing with a 2019+. How long your 2019+ transmission will last will depend on how well it is serviced, and the load and conditions it has to meet (i.e. the ATF temperature). For those that tow, Toyota has provided an additional ATF exchanger up front since 2002 until it was discontinued in 2019. Up until 2010, there was no thermostat at the transmission.

    In 2010, Tundra replaced the 4.7L with the 4.6L. That 4.6L could be equipped with a tow package with an ATF cooler up front. It implemented the use of a thermostat at the transmission, and it was also the first application having the ATF heat exchanger built into the top of the AC condenser. In 2010, the 5.7L continued to use the stand-alone exchanger used since 2007 without a transmission thermostat. Beginning in 2011, both engines used the transmission exchanger packaged in the AC condenser with ATF thermostats at the transmissions. Since 2013, the 4.6L has not been equipped with the tow package, and comes only with the 3.91 axle, not the 4.10 axle. Starting in 2019, the ATF exchanger built into the AC condenser was discontinued.

    Great explanation thank you. What about the oil cooler that is also stickered to be on the 2019?

    Toyota hasn't lied...it's there just like it has been since 2006. There is a warmer/cooler on the side of all Tundra transmissions that quickly brings the ATF temperature up to engine coolant temp after startup. From what owners have reported here on ATF thermostat opening temperatures on pre-2019 Tundras, it is clear that Toyota's ideal ATF operating temp is 195 degrees (thermostat opening temperature pre-2019).

    In spite of all the new-owner bitching about the window sticker lying, the small can on the transmission actually does "cool", or maintain, the ATF temp at engine coolant temp. That is true until the transmission begins to generate more heat than the small coil in the warmer/cooler can remove. If you tow with your Tundra, it's disingenuous marketing, but technically true. It's doubtful any of the threatened "class-action" lawsuits would be successful.

    For daily driving, the warmer/cooler can maintain ATF temperatures that are safe under most driving conditions. Towing causes the transmission to generate much more heat than the warmer/cooler can remove. Without the additional front heat exchanger, ATF temperature can climb far above the 195 degree optimum that Toyota has tried to maintain in previous years using additional tow package cooling up front. For heavy towing in mountainous conditions, not even the front heat exchangers have maintained ATF temp near Toyota's ideal 195 degrees.
