You know the “rattle” sound a Diesel engine makes on a regular basis? Well I’m getting a similar sound coming from the engine as I accelerate under low rpm. Especially when moving up a hill or something that stresses the engine a tad and right before the transmission would typically shift into a lower gear for more torque. Normal cruising, everything is normal. Hard acceleration is also normal. Just under subtle acceleration/gas pedal to maintain speed as I’m starting to move up a hill or after coasting in traffic. Any ideas?

    Maybe engine knocking/detonation?

How many miles do you have? My old tundra with high mileage made a noise with similar description and it as the belt tensioner going bad. But it was over 200k miles

Mine is still under the available service included from Toyota. So whatever they use at the dealer.

My 2014 is doing the exact same thing and sounds the same as you describe. Did you figure out what it was?

I haven't noticed this on my Tundra, but I did have it on my 2016 Tacoma. It was a very brief detonation/knock when the engine hit the right load/rpm combo. I remember the Tacoma owners manual said it was normal. Maybe see if something similar is written in the Tundra manual?

My '16 (22k miles) makes a knocking sound like that if I feed it regular fuel. It's worst at about 45 mph putzing along in 6th, then traffic speeds up a bit, give a little throttle and stumble ting ting before it decides to downshift. Eventually got to where if I have 87 in it I drive in S5 until I'm doing at least 50 mph so it doesn't do it so often. That means the mpg difference around town is high enough to make up half the cost difference of premium so it just drinks that now. It's never pinged on 93.

Now that I think about it, the old 4.0L Tacoma had the same problem, pinging and eating spark plugs. I eventually I just quit feeding it the regular swill and all was right as rain. It was kind of expected for that motor though; the '05 4.0L (first year of it) said premium fuel recommended, then in '06 with exactly the same engine and tune said 87 octane required. On premium Toyota said it changed from 236hp > 239 hp, and 266 lb-ft > 278 lb-ft so it wasn't placebo when it ran better.

I have the exact same issue like a chattering noise like it is valves r a bearing. Every now and then on take off it will be quite loud for second but i can make it happen by just barley giving it gas especially up a hill. Going back to dealer today. First time they said it was normal last time they said my gas had to much ethanol in it. But it is a flex fuel motor ?

I was basically told I needed to start running 91 octane gas. While I feel this is a cop out on Toyota’s part, it does seem to fix the problem.

I think it has something to do with the flex fuel motor and the computer thinking it has more ethanol in gas than it really has. Any way i traded it in and got a 2020 crew max 4x4 and regular motor no flex fuel !!!

My old 2017 started making that noise around 50,000 miles. I had it to the dealer three times for examination but they never could give me a solid answer. They couldn’t find anything wrong and theorized it could be the alternator. I put another 20,000 miles on it and traded it in.

Truck was knocking. Didn’t like 87 octane. Ran 91 and it stopped. If I went back to a lower octane gas it would start up again

    Not many yet, mostly stock.
I’m using octane booster and premium gas. 1 tank to 1 bottle of Lucas octane booster mixture works, mine had an issue. Seams to have gone away. Mine is a flex fuel truck from Iowa,
