Show us your ham radio installations

Okay, I did a Subaru Forester ham install on my old 2003 XS with 2m and 400. I'm selling it to my twin brother and don't wanna rip it out and re-install it into the Tundra. What ham possibilities exist for a 2017 SR5? 6M possibly?

I saw a video about running the amp too underneath the passenger seat. I, also, saw a video for running breakers with an antenna pass-thru on the bottom of the bed (if running a bed cover).

What i'm really interested in seeing is dash/console pics!!!

What are you guys running!? and could we see some pics pretty please!!!!

 

Interested as well and will be subscribing to this thread. I just run a cheaper baofeng for now with a nagoya magnetic antenna and use my cb primarily for trails etc.

The chasis of mine is beneath the driver seat. The face is screwed to the dash. This photo is before I moved the mic which is now plugged into the chasis.

im trying to figure out if it would be best somewhere up top or below the steering wheel.....

Nice clean installs @831Tun @TRD15559! Here is the I’m lazy won’t clean my truck live off Skittles and Aquafina water install.

 

Just rockin a UV--5R handheld.

 

How have you found the programming to be on that unit? Did you buy the software and cable to tune it from a PC?

 

I stay on blue and green dot frequencies, so I don’t program much. I can and I have done both simplex and repeater frequencies manually. It’s a many button press procedure. I would recommend a cable and chirp if you will be doing a bunch of programming. The cable is cheap and chirp is free.

 

Got an old Kenwood TM-V708, ham repeaters on right side of the display and scanning the locals on the left.

 

That’s about as clean an instal that you are going to get on the Tundra. Easy access to both sides of radio, to the mic, and you are one percenter drilling holes in roof tops. Bad ass.

 

i took out the map clip on the roof console and mounted the face (ftm-400) there. extended mic cable comes out near the lighter sockets at the bottom of the dash. i'll be adding an external speaker into the cup holder that is in front of the shifter.

 

I can take some pics when I get home later (depending on snow) but I have a FTM-400 mounted under the drivers seat with a 4 port rig runner for power. Power to the rig runner is direct to battery with a 40 amp relay that opens with ignition power. The head is suction mounted to the top left of the windshield and the mic is by my knee ... both required extension cables. I also have a remote speaker mounted in the middle of the dash under the windshield. So far it all works pretty well!

I mounted the main unit under the driver’s seat like @831Tun then mounted the faceplate in the roof console. I added a remote socket in a switch blank for the mic.

 

So clean.

For the thread,
I just ordered a Icom 2730A from gigaparts.com. I also ordered the rabo fabrications bed rail mount for my antenna. I plan on putting the antenna either in the front left (drivers side) corner attached to the front rail, or directly in the middle of the front rail so it would centered with the third brake light if that makes sense.

From the rail to the top of the roof is about 24 inches, so I am thinking that I would want the 51 inch or 62 inch model to attach to the bedrail mount. This way I have either 27 inches above roof height (with the 51 inch) or 38 inches above roof height (with the 62 inch). Both models have folding capability or I can I screw them when not in use. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions please let me know. I just got my technicians license thanks to @P-Factor. So I want a clean instal but also a solid working instal also. I know ground plane is dead center of roof with NMO mount drilled in or magnetic mount, but I also like the rail mount and will accept some dB loss.

I haven't noticed appreciable db loss with the bed rail mount, there's loss for sure but it's not noticeable judging by my trans/recep compared to others in the group. I think my antenna is only +/- 41".

Wow! I think this is the best setup so far.

 

will do. it isn't flush mount like @Porschetech29 and i need to do a little more fiddling around with it.

maybe. i'll have to check the shelf. 1, 2... 5 on that shelf. 6, 7 on the shelf over there. and... looks like 3 or 4 in that box down there. fridge has 1, 2... 4 no 5, boxes of 120 film and a couple of packs of 35.

wish i had opportunities to use this one still.

oh. i like that. did you just wire up your own rj45 socket or find something pre-made?

 

I purchased a rj45 extension and modified a switch blank for a factory look

 

I might have to pick your brain on that one, the mic cable routing could be improved on my setup.
