Popping/Thump noise when driving

I have an 06 Tundra RWD with the 4.7 engine. I've been having an issue with it for a while where there's a weird popping or thumping noise. It seems to be coming from the front side of the truck towards the driver's side. I usually hear it whenever I break, take off or turn. However, it doesn't always do it. I've taken it to 4 different shops and replaced most of the suspension, but it still make the noise.

So far I've replaced:

1. Outer/inner tie rods
2. Upper/Lower Ball Joints
3. Struts
4. Stabilizing bar ball joints

It's bugging me to no end. I took a water proof camera and attached it to the bottom of the truck and drove around in it. I uploaded the video to YouTube.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

 

It sounds like something is loose inside the cab... are you in Australia?

 

Lol no, It's just I had to mount the camera upside down.

What do you mean something lose inside the cab?

 

I can't tell where the microphone is, but the sound I hear seems more body / interior oriented.

BTW, that's a good video - maybe check you body mounts.

 

It's with the camera. I don't know which side though. How would one check the body mounts? Also, when I drive it i hear it under me, towards the front. And sometimes when it's really bad I can feel it on the steering wheel.

 

Those 4 bolts missing on the transmission thread? Someone? Seems its an 06 thing.

 

I just happened to be catching up on some lost reading here last night from 3 months time spent in the Brasilian Rainforest this past summer... and came across this.

First time I’ve ever heard of this. Blows me away that all 4 bolts fell out and the transmission didn’t rip off.

Solution was reinstall new mounting bolts. Applies to 05-06 Tundras and 05-07 Sequoias. Both RWD ONLY.

Hmm, i checked and there is 1 bolt missing. The other 3 might be loose. I'm going to tighten them and find a new bolt for the other one... hopefully this fixes my issue.

 

It sounded like the clunk was behind the camera...

 

I couldn’t tell exactly, but from my house it sounded like it was coming from my computer speaker.

 

This is what I was thinking. The sound seems like it's emanating from somewhere very close to the camera.

 

One must be inverted to enjoy the full effect of this video.

On seriousness note, any chance you would want to do that at night. I saw something but then glare of light covered the area.

Nope. It didn't fix it. I replaced all 3 bolts and added the one that was missing. It does seem like the clunking went away, but the popping noise is still there. I'll try to get it on camera again when I get the chance.

 

Maybe you have two separate problems?

 

That's what I'm thinking. What could cause a popping noise when breaking, going, and turning? All with it being random with it happening only sometimes.

 

Not sure about popping. Maybe shocks?

That clunking was for sure heavy loose metal on metal sounding.

 

It could be in your steering box. Could be your wheel hub bearings. I replaced my outer tie rods and that helped some of my issue

 

At times, especially at the 12s mark, it seems to coincide with a shift in something. You can see the entire stabilizer bar assembly shift abruptly when it happens. But then a little later in the video you hit some rough road and it doesn't make the sound. So it seems like if something shifted, it may have done so early on and only sometimes gets knocked out of that shifted position.

 

I have the same issue but haven’t diagnosed it as far as you have. You should get some real mechanics involved. Toyota master mechanics should be the one to know the answer.
Another option is to talk to folks in Huntington Beach. Camburg.com They build full out Baja Trucks but they also can just Supe up our Tundra to Baja level. They can also just make it an on road / off road monster for a more reasonable cost. My point is they know there stuff.

Guessing where it could be could be inside the steering box itself. Off road companies sell upgraded gear boxes.
If it’s body mounts I’d think we’d see separation as you are lowering the vehicle to the ground or Vice-versa.

 

Yep, that is some crazy shit. When my 06 still belonged to my dad I was under the truck looking at how to approach something else we were getting ready to tackle. I happened to look where the trans mounts to the cross member and I told my dad the freakin bolts are missing! We looked at each other in disbelief We put new bolts in and the clunk/noise he was complaining about went away. I still have a hard time thinking about it not being bolted down.

 

I checked (2002) mine and they are still there. It was crazy how I came across that one post from back in the summer and then the next day this OP was asking about noises and his truck being 2wd and an 06!

One would never know these were missing unless you knew to look for them. You must have a good eye to have had to point that one out to your dad. Even the OP mechanics didn’t spot one missing bolt and the others loose.

 

I just can’t see how they’d be become loose or fall out. I’m shocked that it didn’t damage the transmission or anything else. Everybody with a first gen should check just to be on the safe side. And yes, I’m glad I happened to look there. I like to inspect things under my trucks from time to time. It’s one of the little advantages of having a lift/level on your truck. I’m able to get under there on a creeper and check everything out
