How fast should I tow?

I have a 19' Airstream and loaded down with all my stuff I bet the trailer weighs around 4000 lbs. Tundra pulls it fine. In some parts of Utah the speed limit is 80. I'm not going to go that fast while towing but I thought 70 mph should be okay?

Also, I know it's not recommended but I use my CC on flat sections of the highway. I was reading up on the CC turning off while towing and I have had this happen on hills. So now I just anticipate it happening and turn it off manually before. What are the issues with towing with CC?

65 in generally regarded as a "safe" speed while towing and results in maximum fuel efficiency. While pulling my boat, I'm usually between 65-70 depending on terrain, traffic, weather, etc.

 

65-70 seems to be the best for me. Go slower when it's windy, wet or foggy. You have 7k + lbs behind you, no way you can stop near as fast as with no trailer.

Tried to get up to 75-80 with a trailer. Not good, after 5 seconds, sucker kept swaying like crazy.

 

70-75 mph with 5500+\~Lbs. sometimes I'll use CC when a long stretch is comin

 

75mph was great on my last trip. 80mph to get around the Fords.

 

ya, it isn't just about how fast you should go, its also about how fast you can stop

 

Of course you realize the faster you tow the faster your the fuel will go, Bye-Bye...

 

I've outfitted my car hauler trailer with sway control to make it more stable at speed, also went long with the 20ft'er for better tracking/balance as well and I've been across Utah at 80 with it with a 6k rig loaded on it. MPGs really suffer at that speed, I prefer 70mph or less but in some places with the speed limit that high anything less than 75 and theres cars and even semi trucks whipping around you which can get sketchy.
I vote for whatever speed feels safe to you with your load, but as close to the flow of the rest of traffic as possible and always maintaining safe following distances.

 

Towing and speed, follow the off road rule' "As slow as possible but as fast as necessary". Stopping is the bitch. I hate when traffic is cruising along then we need go from 60mph to 0 for no reason. I trailer 9K about 5-7 thousand miles a year.

 

I tow 65-70 that's with 5000 lbs +. It it is raining I slow down to 55-60

 

I know next to nothing about trailers like that, but on boat trailers the tires play a role also. Recently ran over a nail and had a flat on my boat trailer. I took it to Discount Tire to get repaired and they told me that my trailer tires were only rated for 62mph. I usually keep it closer to 70, but sometimes I drag that boat over 500 miles in a day. No way I'm gonna drive 60! I bought new ones rated up to 87 before I left the store. I did more research after that and found that lots of trailer tires list the load rating but that the speed rating is a little harder to find.

 

Beat me to it. A lot of people have no idea what their trailer tires are rated for. Most are surprised to find out that 60 mph is usually the norm.

 

I was just gonna comment on trailer tire speed ratings. They normally aren't rated for much over 60 mph unless you buy something rated higher.

 

I tow a 30' travel trailer 9k loaded and keep it at 64 mph and use CC on flat surfaces.

 

I'm one of these people you speak of. I guess I just didn't think of speed rating for the trailer...dumbass. Looks like I might have to get new tires before boating season.

 

You can tow as fast as you like but when you turn around and that load ain't there....that means you went too fast.

 

The only reason I know is from working at a Les Schwab (tire/suspension place) for a couple years prior to enlisting.

 

I just towed a 4600 lbs (trailer and 67 VW Bug) from San Diego to San Antonio. No issues whatsoever, not even going through the mountains heading into Arizona. I did that with a 2007 Tundra with 212,800 miles on the odometer. I was going 60-65 miles all the way.
Driving an Airstream ? I don't think you will have problems. The Airstream is made for the road, the air flows through it very smoothly, hardly any drag whatsoever.

The Airstream has two tires, the trailer has 4 tires. So, for safety purposes, check on the air pressure of the tires on the air stream at every gas fill up.
