I have a perfectly good 14 Tundra SR5 that I've keep in excellent shape. In fact, there is little doubt in my mind it would last more than a day or two on the average Toyota lot. New 19 Pro LED headlights. Almost new 285/55/20 E rated Falkens. 18 Pro grille. TRD rear sway bar. Firestone Air bags. Remote start. Tow mirrors..... and I still have all the original stuff I took off. Best of all NO PAYMENTS.....

Yet, I've started looking at Sequoias and I can't get the Army Green 2020 TRD PRO off my mind. To make matters worse. I actually found a deal where the dealer isn't wanting MSRP or more for it.

Tell me I'm crazy for wanting a vehicle that cost this much!!!

So, you’d be paying like $40 grand + your trade, to move into a vehicle that has a few minor upgrades to what you currently own? My opinion? Wrap your truck in army green and save yourself $37k...

Not crazy. They are basically the same vehicle.. do you NEED a truck? Can you accomplish what you need with the covered rear storage area? If so, then go for it. You only live once!
Personally, I think the Sequoias are great but I need the open bed space that the Tundra provides. On a side note, I’ve been trying to talk the wife into getting one but she likes her Highlander too much...

Same here. I would prefer my wife trade her highlander but she loves it too much.

I've been in a Tundra now for 13 years now. I want the space to hold my children getting older. I can count on my hands the times I've had to have a truck in the last 13 years. Most of the time it was moving someone else's stuff. Not my own. I can always buy a trailer. I have a boat but nothing the Sequoia can't handle.

I'm at least going to go look at it Friday. Right now, if I go, I'll probably pull the trigger.

Valid points. The numbers don't make sense. I've been looking at used Sequoias and have only found one that was even close to being clean. It amazes me how bad some of them have looked. Just imagine a whole herd of kids all throwing up at the same time........ The one I found would end up being about the same payout and keep my Tundra. Extra insurance to just let it sit and it doesn't really make sense for me.

Does the Sequoia still only come with the small gas tank?

I think its the regular Tundra tank. Like 26.8 gallons or something like that.

Since you asked someone to tell you that you're crazy, I'll simply offer this. if you really like that color then you can probably get your truck painted and get a camper top to match for a lot less money. Then you would have a lot of room and even more versatility in my mind. Just a thought.

I'm not really one to ask though, because I bought my truck over a lunch break when I wasn't even looking for one!

If you don’t need the attributes of a truck and you can financially afford a new payment then I say go for it.

I would never do it because of the versatility a truck provides over a SUV. Reason why I traded my Tahoe for the Tundra.

My wife bought a new 2017 Sequoia in June of 2017. This inspired me to buy my 2018 Tundra in January, 2018. Both are outstanding vehicles and nearly the same as far as features. It would be nice if it could have a 38 gallon tank though, it would make a much nicer long range travelling vehicle.

Personally, I would say go for it!

I honestly wish I could have both, so I don't think you're crazy. That army green is certainly sweet, like a siren calling. But the siren call often takes you to the rocks, so do your financial homework.

I’ve been in your shoes many times. Had a great truck and “decided” I was better off in a different non-truck vehicle. Every time I get back into a truck. I think that is why I have had so many trucks. Each one I sell I wish I hadn’t sold it.

Go with your gut but realize if you are a truck guy you’ll be back....Truck Gang!

Money was made to be spent. Keep the Tundra and buy the Sequoia. We are on our third Platinum Sequoia (2008, 2012, 2016) and looking at the fourth now. They are nice!

Your crazy. To each his own though - the question I would ask and the one that would stop me is - what could I do with the extra 40k that you will put towards the vehicle that you don't need? You have a sweet truck that's already upgraded AND PAID FOR! I would be thinking house (buy one, pay existing off, upgrade it, buy another for investment... way before another vehicle I don't need, then hunting property, IRA, kids college, not necessarily in that order though.

Valid points. To me, here the reality of any vehicle purchase.

    1. Vehicle prices are going up.
    2. Any vehicles not worth anymore than this very moment.
    3. Vehicles do not last forever. They have to be replaced. Some sooner than others.

If I were to keep my truck and then have to replace after 6 years or so. I would have very little value left in my truck in order to use toward my next vehicle. Add the fact prices are increasing, its not too bad a decision to replace your vehicle periodically. Ideally, a good position is usually around 3 years into a purchase or at the end of most loans. usually 5 to 6 years.

Also, it is difficult to get loans on vehicles that are 8 years old or more. If you can, you will pay an increased interested rate. The industry has created the environment this way to increase and maintain sales.

Either way, I pulled the trigger and I'm enjoying it....

congrats....what did they give you for your Tundra (if you traded it in) and what did you pay for the TRD Pro Sequoia if you don't mind sharing? Looks good!

Congrats, that's a sweet looking rig! Let's not get silly with the math, though, especially with getting rid of it three years into a purchase. You're taking the biggest depreciation hit over those first three years, and there's still tons of life left in the vehicle. Your 2014 Tundra would most definitely not need to be totally replaced in six years, and the amount of repairs you would need to do to add up to $40k is probably more than you'd ever need to do. If we're talking real numbers, it almost always (probably actually always, but never say never) makes more financial sense to pay cash for a used vehicle and repair as needed.

Anyway, nothing wrong with buying new if you want that shiny new car (I've done it myself a couple times), but let's not pretend it makes more financial sense :).

Congrats on the new rig! Money isn’t everything, and sometimes you can’t put a price on happiness... Does it make financial sense to install a pool in the backyard and completely Re-landscape your property? Nope. Getting to spend that time with the family that you’ll never get back, and the look of happiness in your children’s faces, worth it? Absolutely. Now let’s see some more pictures of that rig!

It just depends on your equity position. The 19s actually make better sense since they're running zero rate up to 60 months on them right now. It is usually better to go used but it just depends on rates, and equity and if you want to tie up your money.

I'm really liking it. I can't describe how good it handles and drives. That is what really sold me. I didn't expect it to be that much different. Totally wrong. Best drive I've ever had in anything.
