Cooper AT3 XLT

I run a 285/75R18. I only compared weight to other tires in the same size. I live in SC where we worry about snow as much as people in Miami do. So go with the MAXX and that way you are covered for all weather situations you can actually see where you live.

I really like the XLT and to be honest they fill my need the best for about 330 days of the year. It’s the other 35 that need to be covered. I’m about 6 months out from buying so hopefully more snow reviews will come in.

 

Are you leveled? I'd like to see a side photo of those [a side photo of your whole truck].

I'm running 275/65/20's and want to move up a little.

 

We haven't had much more than a dusting of snow here in WI so my XLT's haven't gotten much of a workout yet. I put a set of AT3 4S's on my dads Tundra a little over a year ago. They're pretty much the identical tread pattern as the XLT's minus the side biters. Two years in a row now they've chewed thru ice and snow on 80 thru Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado. I've been from Empire up and over Berthoud pass and almost up to Rand in lots of snow with no traction problems at all. They've handled 12+ inches of snow on a 4 mile road into the ranch with ease.
For those familiar with the mountain roads of north central Pennsylvania during deer season, they've had absolutely no problems there either. Last year we drove down an open gated road in well over a foot of wet snow, mud underneath in 2wd and came part way back up in 2wd before switching to 4wd. Had a rut not gotten us I'm confident that we could've come all the way back up in 2wd. They've also not had any problems walking up the driveway into our hunting camp, which usually requires 4wd in the summer.
They've also handled many an unplowed back road, snow covered highway and icy driveway here in Wisconsin.
Those are my winter, snow experiences. I don't think you could ask for a better tire as long as you drive for the conditions. And as @belanger9 pointed out... if you need studded tires no regular AT is going to work for you.

 

They maxx do well in snow but mine only lasted about 30,000

Great feedback, Greg. I really want to trust these. Like I said, most of my driving is pavement and the off-roading I do is pretty tame. Being a MN native I know exactly what you are talking about in those areas. I need a reliable snow tire for about 30 days a year.

Did you replace with the XLT?

 

Your going to be very disappointed with winter performance. I feel very uncomfortable driving with these, last year I swapped out half way through winter

And they are starting to flat spot when sitting for a few days....getting wheel shake till they warm up....

 

What are you driving in? Are you in snow the entire winter?

 

Western Range of the rockies, Flathead Valley, Lincoln, and Lake counties in Montana.

Sorry I guess it would make more sense if I did. I’m looking at getting new ones on Black Friday. I’m leaning towards wild peaks. The maxx are great tires but I’d like more miles.

I’ve only read 1 negative snow review and that was here from the guy that switched to studs.

I’ve got close to 50k on my 275/70r18 KO2’s that have been rotated every 5k and I don’t have a heavy foot. They don’t see trail rocks etc. they see some camp roads and a ton of snow and have handled really well.
I’ve got close to ½ the tread left on them and it’s enough to where I’m almost not considering buying new ones this winter. If I slide around some when we get some big lake effect then I’ll pull the trigger. Torn between another set of these and the XLTs. Looking at a 295/70r18 or 305/65r18 with Billy’s 6112’s up front. at the 3rd setting (2” or so)

 

I’m in the same boat. So, you’ve read other reviews on the XLT about snow? I find them hard to find being they are a new tire. I’m on the fence about these, the ST MAXX, the Duratrac (which are solid in the snow) or another set of KO2 which have been solid. I was just thinking about giving Cooper a shot.

 

I didn't need to just got a smoking craigslist deal on them. I run Blizzaks on my commuter car and the wife's car. Probably the best winter tire you can get IMHO...….

But the studded Duratracs, I have been surprisingly impressed with.....Great traction and they are lasting longer then a true snow tire.....

 

This last week has really put these new tires through the [Winter] test, and I'm thoroughly impressed. We got about 15" of snow where I'm at, and I was getting around no issue. Even with the snow packed roads freezing and re-freezing every night. Putting the truck in 4-Hi I felt a little bit unstoppable... Just one guy's opinion, but I'm happy with my purchase.

 

The thing for me about the Coopers I've had in the past is 1) their annual Spring sale 2) and mostly, they balance well 3) and they handle well in all conditions in my experience.

They don't last as long for me, but ... ya' know, I like the way they ride and handle.

P.S. My brother loves Yokohama Geolander IIs.

Good to hear. I’m actually back on the XLT train. For the price and for the bulk of my driving they seem perfect. I checked the old AT3 reviews which seem to be the same tread pattern and the snow reviews are mostly positive. I’m looking forward to putting a set on. Thanks for the report, my friend.

So I purchased the XLT's about 2 months ago now. Got them in 285/75R18. I had a set of the original AT3s on my previous tundra and after over 100k (kms) they still had tread life left and I was generally happy with them so I purchased the XLTs. The improved sidewall gives them that tougher look while still retaining the same tread pattern as the AT3s. In the past couple weeks I've had a chance to test them out in some pretty good snow and in 4HI these things are great. For people complaining about winter/snow traction you have to remember it's a 6000lb vehicle and moving or stopping that much mass is going to require adjusting the way you drive in those conditions. It's not a dedicated snow/ice tire either. But these tires are fantastic. They're light, they balance well, they're quiet on the highway, they have good tread wear, they look like a tough all terrain tire. They are a great all around tire, and they won't break the bank. A lot of shops here in Canada tried to push the BFG KO2, but based on friends and online reviews, they're noisy and soft with less than ideal tread life. What I found out is that Cooper doesn't have their own warehouse in Canada therefore its not as easy to get them. If the tire distributors don't have your size in stock, it's a pain for them to order them in and all they want is to make the sale and get the money out of your pocket. Purchase what you want based on your own research and you'll be less likely to have buyers remorse.

I've taken these tires hunting, through snow and ice, rain, dirt roads, plenty of highway driving and they've been great. For the people complaining about them in snow, adjust your driving, try airing them down on heavy snow/ice days, and realize there's no magic tire out there that is perfect in every condition. But these do a fair job across all conditions. Just my opinion.
