Front sensor on a TRD Pro Grille

Hi Fellas,
I'm about to change my Chrome grille to a TRD Pro Grille. I kinda like the older TRD Pro Grille that comes on the 2018 year than the new one . However, I have the 2019 Limited with the sensor . Is there anyway to reinstall the sensor with some kind of kit or I just have to stick with the new TRD Pro Grille ? This is the Grille I like.

I used the jomax bracket last week. So far so good. I have put around 100 miles on it so far without issue. I did not recalibrate. They will send you a YouTube video when you order the bracket that is very very very very very detailed.

One thing I will mention, they sent me a face plate for the bracket with a Jomax logo in it that is all in white. It is not subtle. I would contact them ahead of time and see if they can send you a more subtle face plate. I wish I did.

 

the AJT bracket is black, that is why I am curious about that bracket and recalibration. AJT has plenty of disclaimers regarding TSS issues not being their issue, not to call, etc.. Understood, but if most are using with no issue I'd like to go with that bracket.

 

I called my local Toyota dealership today as a second option to see if I can go with the 2019 TRD Pro grill just in case I was not able to go with the 2018 Pro grill. The service advisor was not as friendly and he said that if I use the 2019 TRD Pro grill, it will not work even with calibration. That's not what I have been hearing but he was very combative about it and he said definitely it will not work. My understanding is I can definitely go with the 2019 TRD Pro grill and it will not be a problem. Has anyone done that before without issues? He said the accident deterrent system will not work anymore.

 

Many members have had great success installing a ‘19 PRO grill on a ‘18 or newer Tundra. There have also been several members who have installed the ‘17 PRO grill on a ‘18 or newer Tundra although there is a little more work to do because of the TSS sensor. There are some great you tube videos for both grill swap outs.

 

I have the 2019 pro grill conversion on my 2019 limited. This calibration stuff is BS it either works or does not. The only thing I ran into was I bought the $60 ebay cover for the sensor and it would occasionally throw an error to "clean the sensor". I ordered the OEM and never got the warning again. If you want to verify it's "calibrated / working" all you do is use your cruise control do a few adjustments on the radar distance. You will know if it's "calibrated or not".

 

The Jomax bracket (from every post I've seen of someone who used it) is not causing problems with the TSS.

That said, I like the idea of going with a grill that doesn't require the relocation bracket, just to avoid possible warranty issues. I like the '17 Pro grill best, but I will probably just get a platinum or sport grill [I think they are exactly the same]: the upside of that would be that I could get the bulge and surround already painted in Quicksand.

 

So you never have to calibrate anything? And it's working perfectly? I swear service departments AR not helpful anymore. They are not knowledgeable at all. he must have told me four times that it will not work at all. I took his name down that way when I do the conversion, I'm going to stop by and prove him wrong

 

What is there to calibrate? If it's not reading the distance correctly that's an entirely different thing. Mounting it a few inches forward or back wards isn't going to effect it. If you were a foot or more off to the left or right that might, but I still doubt there is any "calibration to compensate" The are "calibrated when they are manufactured to the specs given by Toyota.

Maybe I'm wrong and they can be calibrated, the question is does it need it....

 

I haven't done the conversion yet. I'm trying to figure this one out before I buy the Pro grill. As you know, my 2019 Tundra limited, the sensor is exactly centered on nthe grill. The 2019 TRD Pro, it's centered from right to left but it's not centered exactly in the center up and down the grill. It's approximately 5 to 6 inch lower than what I currently have. And when I hear from a dealership that it cannot be done, it makes me wonder. I'm planning on buying everything OEM including the sensor cover

I literally just got off the phone with Sparks Toyota service department. They said that if I change from my 2019 limited grill do the 2019 TRD Pro grill,, the collision detection will no longer work at all and I would have to turn it off. He also said that it still will not work even with calibration. This is weird.

 

BTW I would order via @Roman he has a list on the thread of exactly what you need as there are "nuts" that are not really reusable.

 

If the radar for the cruise control works off the "collision detection" as I think it does, they don't know what they are talking about. Did you ask them if the cruise control would not work as well? I am 99.999 sure the radar and collision are the same sensor and cruise control with distance adjustment works great.

 

That's great. I will do so. And regarding the conversion, I just don't understand why sparks service department said it will not work because how do you justify all the tundra Pro guys that are lifted?

 

Ask @Roman he works at a dealership he sold me mine and I don't think he would of sold it knowing it would not work...

The guys at sparks, you may of got someone that didn't know what they were talking about.

 

I did not ask him that question specifically. I just simply asked if there will be any issue by swapping a 2019 Tundra limited front grill with a 2019 TRD Pro grill. I asked if there's is any calibration needed? He said that yes there will need to be calibration however the collision detection will not work and I will have to disconnect it.
I hope someone from Sparks Toyota is looking at this thread and to comment on it

Sparks is actually one of the biggest Toyota dealerships that modify their trucks. @Roman does a lot as well. I think both of them know what you’re talking about, I wouldn’t say they don’t. The pro grill is technically set up for a 2 inch lift in the front that’s probably what you’re talking about. Yes it’ll probably work but it’s not aligned properly.

 

I should of said that "individual" at sparks. 2" lower when you consider all cars are different heights etc. I still do not see how you would re-calibrate for that.
Like I said I've done this conversion at it has worked flawlessly. YMMV I guess...

 

I will second this. Installed newest Jomax bracket about 1k miles ago. Simple install and ZERO issues with the sensor. No recalibration needed even after installing 6112s up front at 1.9”.
My only issue is the branding on the cover plate. Wish it was black, but honestly you don’t notice it unless you’re looking for it.

Correct. You remove the sensor from the grill and mount it with the new bracket

 

I was at my local dealership Saturday getting Sightline wipers. Buy one get one free sale. Two for $20. Stocked up for tundra and Venza. Anyways there was a service bulletin under the glass at the parts counter . My phone was out in my truck and I parked a long way out. Otherwise I would have gotten a photo. Parts guy was giving me a hard time because I wanted so many blades otherwise I would of asked him for a copy of it. Basically I (think)? It said that they would no longer sell TRD Pro grills to truck owners with the sensors in the grill because they will not work then? Something to that effect? Good luck. D
