Good morning, my wife and i are talking about moving to Dallas next year. She is a elementary school teacher. She has a connection down in the Rockwall area that use to teach and still knows teachers there. Anyways, I worked on a grain farm for 10yrs, a fertilizer plant for one yr, I have my class A cdl and I am almost a year into insurance as of right now. I have property/causality, and Health/Life licenses. I can operate most heavy equipment. What i am looking for is any insight from you guys on job opportunities and decent places to live down there. It is nothing set in stone yet. But she has been in contact with people for her job already. We are currently in central Indiana. Any help would be appreciated! She can make way more there than she will ever be able to in her lifetime in Indiana.

From what I hear Texas schools under pay but not like Ok. Rockwall is nice area. My daughter tutors in Mesquite and use to tutor in Rockwall ISD. All of my kids graduated from Rockwall Heath. Getting a job around here with CDL should be no problem. My company has a large warehouse in Sunnyvale and we are always looking for local and OTR drivers. Housing will be higher than In..

We don’t have any kids. A couple cats. We would be fine in a smaller house or apartment or condo. I know there will be some differences in cost of living. But we are tired of winter and she has been teaching for 7 yrs and hasn’t got a raise once. Teachers will always be underpaid! But Indiana gives more money to private schools than public! Texas is a top teaching state from what we have found out.

I lived in Indiana (South Bend) for most of 1980s. I remember rent was very low back then. Are you taking the cost of living difference between the two places?

Wait and see where she ends up getting a teaching job before you decide where to live. Commute times in the Dallas area can be horrible. No matter where she ends up you should have plenty of options.

That area is booming right now as are quite a few of the Dallas area suburbs. The good news is that North East, East, and Southeast within about 30 miles of Rockwall are some close by small towns/communities with some acreage to be had too.

Stay out of DISD or the city of Dallas for that matter.
I love Dallas, and certain parts are nice, but I wouldn't want my wife working for DISD.

Rockwall is a good area, further east to Fate, Royce City, even Greenville.
I live in Forney, should have chosen Rockwall or even Rowlett.
Forney is OK, but their new home building growth has surpassed the city's infrastructure (roads, etc.) capabilities.

Also look to the north of Dallas, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Anna.

If you have a CDL you shouldn't have a hard time getting employment.
It would be an asset if you spoke Spanish..

    Good luck..

I know Indiana is cheap to live in, this is where i grew up. But she makes next to nothing. I don't care what I do lol. But we would like warmer weather year round! She has a friend that lives in Rockwall that use to teach there and still knows teachers in the school. We also have friends that live in Fort Worth. Texas is one of the top teaching states. All Indiana cares about is State Testing. I know the cost of living will be more. But I thought i would post on here more for myself if we end up down there. We wont do anything unless she gets something. We are weighing are options, but looking to leave Indiana. I appreciate everyone's input! Keep it coming!

Definitely stay out of Dallas. Nice thing about the Rockwall area pretty much has everything. There are new apartments going up just across the lake to replace the the ones leveled by the Xmas tornado. You can buy land and a manufactured home if you choose to. Several dealers close by. Lots of good school districts close by but competition for teaching jobs in some might be high. She would have choice of Rockwall, Royce City, Lovejoy, Sunnyvale, Forney, even Mesquite or Garland (last choices). There are lots of lake nearby and some good eating places in Rockwall.

For a quality family life, rural areas of Texas are a great choice, and would provide a good match for your Indiana skill set. (Cities suck. I hate cities.) I would probably try to stick with insurance if possible, but it would depend on what compensates you best in your selected area. In a small town, it would probably mean having to pour yourself into your own small agency. Historically, small town school systems in Texas have been severely handicapped, for both students and teachers, by the low tax base. That may have changed with the "Robin Hood" tax sharing laws.

Not sure how the two compare, but the cost of living in Texas is a lot lower than it is in most northern states. There’s also no state income tax here, so that’s in your favor.
Like others have said, getting employed with a CDL shouldn’t be much of an issue. Teachers are generally underpaid everywhere, but I’d guess it’s better here. It also varies greatly by district.

All teachers are underpaid in every state! But some states pay more than others. We are currently in rural Indiana. Even near Indianapolis and other bigger cities they don’t pay well at all. She can make almost $15,000
more based on who she’s talked to that currently teaches in Rockwall. Indiana could care less for public schools, and it’s not getting any better.

I’ve got two daughters working on education degrees as we speak. I’m proud that they’ve chosen such worthwhile career paths, but know they’ll likely struggle financially for a long time. Hopefully they never end up looking out of state for work. It’s hard enough that they’re a couple of hours away as it is.

My wife was meant to teach, that’s her passion. But it makes it difficult when the state doesn’t care about teachers, when the schools around us have openings they are only getting 2 resumes, they haven’t had student teachers in 3yrs. Anyone going into teaching has a heart of gold! Thats great that both of your daughters want to do it! Indiana also doesn’t pay any extra if you have your masters. Most other states do.

I’m definitely proud of them. One just started college, and the other is a senior. She’ll be starting student teaching in January. She’s doing music education, so is definitely passionate about it.

That’s awful. They’re probably losing good teachers like crazy on top of not getting new ones.

My older daughter is a teacher at a private school in North Dallas. The pay is low, but it's better than what you've mentioned. Have your wife look into the local private schools in the area. Many are a much better environment than the public schools. Private schools don't put up with bad behavior from the students and parents are more involved and supportive.

Her school just fired there superintendent because of missing funds. The school is also 1.5 million in debt. The head of the union there told her to go to another state if she wants to keep teaching. He said it will be a long time before she ever sees a raise. They are going to lose a ton of teachers next year.

I recently moved from Crawfordsville, Indiana (45 min west of Indy). I don't live in Dallas, but I do manage a few plants around the Dallas area. As a result, I fly into Dallas at least once a month.

Just my $0.02... Don't do it. The only benefit you’ll have is less snow in the winter. The cost of living is way higher there (and around there) than in central Indiana, the scenery is horrible, it’s flat and stupid windy, traffic around Dallas is insane, and 99.9% of the people think that the left lane is the slow lane. I've been to 12 different countries and all over the US. Texas has, by far the worst drivers on earth. Hands down, the worst.

Don’t let the no state income tax fool you.
What they don’t take from your income they will gouge you in property taxes.

I know some school districts pay well here but it’s mostly in areas where the cost of living is higher than other areas.

As for jobs, there’s plenty of jobs. Don’t worry about finding work.

And we thank you for not moving here.

Yes, it's windy at times, but you get used to the breeze. Some parts of Texas are flat, but if you want a change of scenery you can drive east to the piney woods. If you want hills, you can drive south to the hill country that was sung about by one of our native troubadours (link below). If you want mountains, a trip to the west will bring you to one of Texas' forty mountain ranges. If you want to hang around the DFW area, I highly recommend the Morton Myerson symphony hall, the Perot Museum, the Nasher Sculpture Garden, the Bass Performance Hall, various world class art museums, and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. That's just to name a few. As for the drivers, Drive Friendly is the state driving motto and you really only have to worry about the transplants. I've been asked in the past if I've lived all of my life in Texas. No, I haven't, but I've all of it here so far and I plan to spend the rest of it here. I am and will remain a proud 7th generation Texan.
