Dead battery Only 9 months old

Well I came out afraf work today and my battery was Dead.
Truck is Only 9 months old.
With 15000 miles.
Had to get a buddy to jump start me.
I've been wanting a duel battery setup.
Just couldn't justify the cost.
Not anymore.
I'll order one soon.

 

Yeah, from what I have read the stock batteries are junk. Same goes for Subaru batteries. My WRX battery didn't last a year.

 

You could go dual battery or get a single big battery I’ve seen some people run. I’m lucky, 78,582 miles stock battery still going good.

 

Good thing is that you should be under the 3/36 warranty period. Toyota will replace it.

I had a Honda Accord that went through 3 batteries before the warranty was over. I got rid of the car and got a Toyota Highlander.

 

Didn't think about my warranty.
I was headed to buy a new winch for truck after work . Till this happened.
If warranty replaces it I'll buy winch.
Been looking at warn m8000 and smittybilt 9500 .
About decided on smittybilt .

Yep mine died a month before the warranty ended. Toyota replaced it free and put a new battery with a 3 year guarantee.

 

It all depends. My stock battery died after 17 months and it was under warranty.

The dealership is 40 miles away with tons of traffic in between each way. i figured by the time I got there, spoke to a service advisor, waited in line for the tech to “test” the battery, get authorization for them to warranty and replace it, I could have gotten a new battery from Batteries Plus.

I bit the bullet and ended up getting an X2 (Northstar) battery from Batteries Plus, 10 minutes away. I didn’t want to mess around with an inferior battery that would leave me stranded again like the OEM one did.

 

Yep . I've talked myself into just buying a battery I want.
So I'll start looking for largest one I can get in factory spot.

Running the X2 myself for the same reasons. I figured why waste my time to stick another POS under the hood.

My factory died in my driveway and only 18 months old. Still under warranty but my dealer is almost an hour away. I was gonna warranty it but they told me they have to have the battery in the truck to warranty it. I was just going to take it up there to them. Then they were gonna send a tow truck because my truck was under the factory warranty. I was then told never mind because the truck was two years old. I then called the first person and they said oh well just call road side assistance. This took 8 hours on the phone and I just decided to say screw it and went and bought the battery I wanted because My time is worth something and I didn’t want some ding bat to screw up my truck trying to load it on a trailer.

Just a small observation I've made over the years having batteries, as my motorcycle's, lawnmowers and bobcat sit for month's at a time : I've been able to revive them by simply putting them on the garage floor and giving them a good shake (careful they can break)to separate the buildup between the plates then charging them, yes I know it would look funny but I haven't bought a battery in quite a few years. My Tundras battery is still holding out for a 2016 but I do accidentally drive over the washboards a little fast on my dirt roads.

 

I did a pre-emptive on my 2018 (having read that the OEM batteries can leave one stranded) and bought a Northstar 27F. After I recovered from that (spendy but worth it), I bought one for my wife's 2017 Sequoia.

So I have two working OEM batteries on the shop floor that I keep charged with a battery tender. I'll give them to my son who has a 2008 Tundra.

Had the same problem in my 17 Tundra and the 17 Outback. Maybe the newer models will just have a "Battery not included" decal...

 

Maybe get another battery from the dealer and then get the new one you want. Then you have a backup. I mean, it's free.

 

I think I take the icing on the cake. I have a 2019 Tundra with 1800 miles. Tried to start the truck up this morning and all I hear are clicks. These batteries suck!

Will the dealer allow me to drive the battery to them without the truck for replacement?

IvI' decided to just buy a battery I want .
Instead if having to deal with dealership.
I want something bigger now that I installed a winch this weekend.

 

I am on my fourth battery now (Interstate). Toyota battery lasted the longest for me (almost 5 years).

 

I want an agm battery .just can't figure what brand .
There's a local batteries plus . But $350 for Northstar is just to much for me to justify.
I've looked at agm from Napa , advance Auto , oriels.
Can't decide .

You can ask, but previous posts indicate that to be a negative. They want to see it and test it themselves as installed to confirm the failure.

Put a charger on it and let it charge for awhile. Use voltmeter to measure before and after, but you'll need 12.6-12.8 volts to start. After charging the battery, switch the charger to "Start" mode, and see if you can get the truck started.

Frankly, I'm not optimistic for you...failure mode on these new OEM batteries is loss of internal connectivity, aka "dead cell". The fact that your solenoid is clicking indicates you have some charge left in the battery, but not enough charge available at the terminals to crank the engine. Mine clicked too, but would not hold a charge or start.

Go to that Northstar group buy thread and see if @ramonortiz55 can still get you in. Looked like about $40 discount. The group buy just closed Friday.

 

It seems that there is an inordinate amount of premature failures of batteries within this community. Wondering about what mods each have - could there be a parasitic drain on the battery with an aftermarket mod?

No mods required. Toyota is providing piss-poor batteries on a bullet-proof truck. Prior to 2016, owners see good life, 2016 forward not so much. See here:

Just replaced a pair of Optimas in my PSD, lasted almost 12 years. 1 of the replacements was junk in 3 months. It's new production LOS for ISO. (lack of standards)

Sad that Toyota is bending over too...

 

Looks like @chasenicholas93 got into the Northstar group buy by direct invitation from the vendor. If you want a Northstar, better get over there. Cheapest you're going to get a Northstar.

As I understand it new truck/car batteries in the last ____ (fill in the blank) years have to be manufactured from a high percentage of recycled lead. I'm not a chemist. I'm not a scientist. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express 5 months ago.
