Is there an easy plug and play Amp solution for the Tundra?

I’m looking to improve the sound quality of my Tundra (2019 TRD Pro). I want to start by replacing the 4 door speakers. I usually purchase from Crutchfield (with the adapters), and will just buy from them. I’m not interested in component speakers or putting speakers in the sail panel.

Next up, I’d like to replace the amp underneath the passenger seat. I’d like an easy plug and play solution. I’d prefer not to have run power from the battery to the new amp. Instead, I’d prefer to use the power source that the factory amp uses. Can anyone recommend an amp, and/or solution?

I know a few may scoff at this approach, but with limited time, money, etc this is what I’d like to do.

There are a few options that have been explored before about this being done. There is an option to just replace the existing amp but it also depends on the existing setup. There is endless ways of setting this up and I will try to get you some links to a few things.

 

********* offers Tundra specific systems designed for each truck, supposedly to maximize sound quality in the exact environment of each, i.e. the Crew Max system is different than the Double Cab system.

A member posted an extremely detailed install thread for the Crew Max option and I only ever read about customers being very satisfied. If only someone would post a thread re the ********* DC system....

 

********* has been a great resource for me. My issue is the cost. Their total packages are more than $1,000! Also, I did exchange a few messages with them, and they indicated it could take up to 2 weeks to ship out their system...seemed a bit odd to me. I guess Amazon has trained me to expect everything within 1-2 days.

I was looking to spend under $1,000.

 

Agreed joe. I’m sure their system is phenomenal, but I’m not looking to win any competitions with my system. I just want clarity and some thump.

 

Any amp that you can use the wimpy power and ground wire from the factory amp is t going to provide much power. You'd at the very least need to run power and ground for anything decent. No plug and play solutions are out there as far as I know. It would be nice though.

 

If you're handy enough, you can tackle this project yourself. Just get yourself a line-out converter, harness and decent amp from Amazon, wire everything up then plug and play it with the existing amp harness under the seat.

I upgraded the speakers, amp and added a Cerwin Vega amp/sub combo on my DC and the sound is 100x better.

 

Screw it!....I just ordered the complete JBL package from tech12volts.
It's hard to pass up that price. Also, I don't have to waste my time piecing something together, and worrying if something will work or not.

 

Please post up your thoughts on the package deal from Tech12. Been wondering how his packages stack up. Haven’t seen anyone review this.

 

Tech12volts has glowing reviews here and everywhere I have read about him. His packages are all very good, well designed, with years of research and experience going into each component selection. Personally I would not shop anywhere else for audio equipment.

 

No doubt Tech12 is legit. Just looking for some reviews of his JBL or Kenwood package as there aren’t many anywhere. I’m hoping he puts something out soon for us Tundras.com peeps like he has for AOT or TC. The last JL package I saw was crazy nice.

 

@Mgmtundra I wound up purchasing this kit from James. The package came in about 14 days I think or less. He builds boxes to order and the shipping company wont take then if they smell like resin. Which makes sense to me. I did upgrade to the stadium 5 amp which I think was a good move.

I did the install myself over two days because I did some sound dampening on the first day. The second day was the actual audio install. Which was pretty easy. The hardest part about it was the fact that I didn't have the right kind of lubricating spray so it took me about 15 minutes to get the power wire through the grommet.

I am very pleased at how much 1 box of sound dampener and the replacement of facotry speakers, amp and adding a subwoofer. I put my lift on hold because I couldn't take the crap stereo any more and for 750 with shipping I couldn't pass that up.

If anyone has questions let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

 

I tried ********* and ordered everything I needed and paid around $1000 and then waited.... And waited, and waited. Couldn't get anyone to call me back... Ever. Tried email and that worked, after a week. Just to hear them keep telling me"next week"over and over and over. Finally just said screw it and got a refund. Never got any products or apologies and they completely ignored my last few emails. Don't waste your time

 

The only things I bought were the 5 channel amp and the wiring. I bought my front door speakers from Crutchfield and Rockford sub off Amazon. I could not afford to lose all the space behind the back seat to a sub. I think you will want the xovers. Not hard to install and better sound. Even if you find an amp to utilize the factory wires you will not be happy.

 

Yes I have questions!
1) How is the DSR-1? Do you feel it would have been better to upgrade the HU?
2)Was there a rack or did you mount the amp and DSR-1 on you're own somewhere?
3) Is it all plug and play except for power cable?

 

I have sent them 2 emails so far and can’t seem to get a reply. Great website and packages that fit my needs.

 

I just did my own upgrade back in july, but I did not use the DSR-1.
You can see the amp and the LOC in the pic, but the rack is from *********.
I originally made a rack from Luan wood, but it was thin and flimsy.
The harness between the amp and LOC is from AutoHarnesshouse

The harness was the only thing you need to wire up and all the information
can be found here in this forum. The hardest part, was running the cable up
to the battery. I have approx $480.00 invested in the pic.

I went with the upgraded system from taco tunes about three years ago. I can’t tell you how happy I am with it. Everything was extremely simple. I ran a new power wire, that was the hardest part. They sent the new amps, with a mounting rack, so everything is tucked away. All speakers and crossovers mounted easily, I drilled for the tweeters. I ended up unhooking the dash speakers, and just use what they provided now. Tuning the amps was real important, and they have videos to walk you through. I also bought the bass control knob, which makes it basically stock, to thumping whenever you want. My next upgrade is the head unit, as I have a 2014, and really want CarPlay. But I vouch for taco tunes, they provided a great product, and email is their preferred method of contact.

 

Before I come across like a dick I want to say I own a side business that ships to 75-200 customers per month. Very similar to taco tunes but each part I sell requires 35 minutes of my labor. I do this outside my full time construction career. Emails and messages are relentless at times. Especially the guys who send you a book but start with I know you’re busy. My reviews are 100% positive and 75% mention the positive customer service. I try my hardest to message everyone within 24 hours. Emails are within a few hours usually. The point of all of this is because I can not get help with taco tunes at all. I called numerous times and emailed more. I started by saying I’m buying your .... but have a question about a specific part. This way they know I’m not just a tire kicker which I’m not. Messages are what leads to sales. If you don’t have the time to reply you shouldn’t be in business in the first place. Just my rant. I apologize for the length.

 

Did you install the loc before or after the amp? I think I’m going to ********* regardless of their terrible customer service. The pnp amp / harness seems great and the tuning videos help. I was debating on getting their add a sub harness too but it would be 2 harnesses plugged in just to get signal to the sub. I thought about just tapping the speaker in/outputs for the loc. Not sure what I’m doing to be honest or where to tap. This stock sound stinks though.

 

I feel bad you had a poor experience with them. All I was trying to relay to you is that the system is fantastic, and worth the wait. I don’t know them, or owe them any loyalty, they just made a great product, and it was a seamless install.

 

I get it and truly appreciate the message. I don’t know how well it will work but the feedback has been phenomenal. The whole concept and actual line of products they offer are a perfect solution. I just wish they would work a little harder on the customer service aspect.

 

Second on James, so far he has been very helpful on my specific needs for my 2015 Crewmax. He shipped all components as promised now just waiting for the time to do the install....

 

I ended up going with the 4 channel amp from ********* to replace the stock amplifier. I can’t even begin to tell you the improvement that this provided. I had already replaced all of the speakers, added a kenwood ksc-sw11 and want to keep the stock head unit (wife’s orders).

I had some questions regarding the install and their custimer service called me back and walked me through it. All in all a great experience. I do have some questions that I was hoping you all could help with in terms of tuning:

1. The frequency ranges from 40-400hz. What do you recommend as the setting?
2. The sensitivity knob- ranges from minimum to maximum? Where do you recommenced that be placed?
3. The switch for high, full or low (assuming this is the filter)? Being that the amp only supplies wattage to the door speakers what do you recommend that setting be placed?

I can’t help with the tunning but I am happy to see your message. I just bought the 4 channel and the accessories as well as their 4 door speaker setup. I went with 2 Kenwood psw8’s. I think it’s 250w max compared to the sw11 which is 150w max. Did you tap into the extra speaker wires in the ********* pnp wiring? Did you install a line out converter? I’m planning on doing a loc with rca splitters. How’s the bass?

 

yeah I am just going to have to bite the bullet and eventually takes the door panels off and do the tuning as explained on the website. It’s just a pain in the a$$ to go back and do it because that means taking everything apart again. But that’s what I get for piecing this together at different times.

bass is way better, volume actually makes it so you can ride with the windows down on highway and still bear the stereo. Much better than stockZ. Very happy with it
