37s with stock gears

Just got my Nitro's and LSD installed. TOTALLY DIFFERENT TRUCK

Had a Toyota Dealer do it. They broke the left front aluminum axel shaft trying to press out the bearing. Another reason I went with doing it there. Just in case something got fucked up.

That LSD is killer. Nothing like chirping BOTH BACK WHEELS with little effort on the gas peddle

 

4.88’s is a must with 37’s!!! We need 5.13’s or 5.29’s!!! Still not stock on 4.88’s . Just keeping it real!!!

 

In a reliable good shop what's a realistic price tag from going stock to 4.88 ratio switch?

 

The guys that’ve had it done will be able to provide a better number, but for some reason $1300 for gears and $1000 for install seems to stick in my head.

 

If I remember right, I think I paid $3200 installed for front, rear, and auburn LSD. Then another $100 for the break-in service after the first 500 miles.

 

I’ve been on 38x13.50’s for a few months with stock 4.10’s, I’ve become used to the loss in power.

Then I drove a stock 5.7 yesterday, and remembered how touchy the gas pedal is. It was like a tuned track car by comparison.

I would definently go for the 4.88’s if I had the money for install, I’m not brave enough to attempt that DIY.

 

Get those gears , one up the 4.88’s to the 5.29’s

 

I run 37x13.5's with Stock Gears. I am Dap tuned. Havent had one issue. Yes you notice a loss in power on the street. But the way I wheel, it doesnt make a difference off the dirt. Throwing into 4-hi or 4-lo in first, and then crawling with he 37s makes things feel like child's play.

At some point I would like to re-gear but I do not have the $ to do so at this time. Maybe in the future when I go Mid-travel suspension or if the wife convinces me to go LT. Right now it is too much of a daily driver to warrant the $ spent. I know in time the rig will see more time in the dirt then it does on the road. Thats the goal, without changing how much I drive on the road now .

 

I’ve never opened a google search that fast in my life. I didn’t believe what you said at first, since all I’ve ever seen for our trucks are 4.88. But I’ll be damned, there they are on the Nitro website. Not released until 03/19 but I’m glad they finally offer something steeper than 4.88’s.

If I’m going to go through the trouble of re-gearing from 4.10’s, it makes more sense jumping all the way to 5.29’s vs 4.88’s. Thanks for sharing that!

Don’t do it. Go to a reputable shop it’ll be a better price.

 

With 35s on mine I'm starting to believe that everyone who said stock gears are fine were referring to city/in-town driving. My times on the highway starts to ride like sh-t once I get about 65+. Truck wants to keep kicking out of overdrive on the slightest incline.

I keep seeing that 4.88s will bring me back to stock like feel, what does going with the 5.29s do for you? Improved anything? Risks?

 

@15Yota even on highway with the 4.30's, no issue? Mine just want to stay in 5th... It'll go to 6th on very flat land, but slightest hill seems to put it back in 5th and it holds there until I slow down a little more, let it shift, then I can speed back up but it'll jump back to 5th at the next hill. And when I say hill, I mean little central Texas hills, not anything big.

Maybe there's something else I can do? Pull the battery and let the computer reset? Retune for different shift points? I dunno, certainly open for options that don't involve dropping another 3-4k, but I drive highways way too much to not address this.

As for the 5.29, I only ask because right now I'm not really hauling, but I do have a travel trailer in my short term plans so wasn't sure if I should go ahead and get what I can since I'm paying for the labor anyways.

Does the speedometer come into play on our transmissions shift points? So could the fact that your speedometer is so far off be part of the cause of hunting for gears? Obviously it’s not all of it, but I’m wondering if it could be part of it. 10 mph is a-lot

Quite happy with the 5.29s and 37" tires. If I were to run a 35" tire I'd go with the 4.88.

Just did 1250mi last week. Cedar City Ut. to Gila Bend Az.(500 mi one way). On 37x12.50r18 Falken Wildpeak At3's. Had about 400ish lbs of tools in the bed of my CrewMax. No issues. Tranny temp was just below the middle mark on the gauge. Averaged about 70mph. Still finishing my 4th tank of gas. Of note I had all the fluids changed and tires installed just before the trip. The Wildpeak's are a great value and quiet. I'll regear after this shows up.
