1st gen fog light mod

Ok, I know it has been discussed numerous times before. BUT I cannot seem to find an exact method for the first gens it seems as if all of the mods are for newer gens or unfortunately they bring you to a different thread. So if anyone out there has some insight/pictures on how to do the fog light anytime mod on the double cab DRL system I'd be a very happy camper. I have the wiring diagram for the fog lights but cannot find the red wire under the column. I had a very hard time moving the fuse panel that's underneath the kick panel. I removed damn near everything underneath the column and unfortunately I ran out of time and needed my truck back so I had to put it all back together. Someone please help me!! I really want this mod done.

 

From what I understand, to do this on the wiring side. I should ground the G-W wire under the column. And I should be able to use these.


Tap into any accessorie circuit and supply power to the pink wire. I believe this is correct but I'd like to see if someone has done this or has done a different mod to get me to have fog lights on with anyother lights on.

 

Anyone have any insight?

 

No sir, but if I did I help you. I’ve seen people really mess things up trying these light mods. Hopefully this bumps your thread. You may be a pioneer here on this one.

 

Well unfortunately im not as good at reading these diagrams as I used to be. Although im not old, it's just been a few years since ive had to read things like this. Im going to talk to my old co worker who has years of experience in electronics. He should easily be able to help me. As soon as we figure it out I'll make a separate thread, most likely in lighting.

According to that wiring diagram looks likes could disconnect the hot wire (#2 on the relay) coming from the headlight fuse and hook ignition +12v there.

Then hook constant ground to #10 on the dash switch.

Then you have switch controlled fog lights.

Now somebody try it!!

 

This was my initial thought. So you are assuming that the wire going through the body ECU is just grounding out the circuit. Honestly that's all that is needed to complete the loop. I just wanted to hear it from someone else lol. Hopefully see my buddy this week I'll assume that's what we will come up with.

 

This bashes be hesitant only because it looks as If the 4 runner doesn't grind through the body ECU. I wonder what that is looking for when the fog lights are turned on. Not 100 percent I need to find the diagram for the ECU to fully understand why this circuit terminates there.

 

Before finding Tundras.com, I frequented TundraSolutions and one of the DIY links I saved was the one below. Someday down the road I'll be looking to do this Mod but will be following the instructions by Eddie in his pdf that's linked to at bottom of first post in DIY link below. There may be wire color differences in my 2004 but will follow the general principle...."segregate the Fog Light Relay Coil “Ground” as well as the Fog Light Stalk switch from the Main Body ECU"....and I should be good to go.

 

I believe this is will help. My concern with this is the wires and connector numbers dont match to what my truck diagram is. Which makes me hesitant to follow his plan directly. I'll reread what he posted about how the ECU works and maybe make a decision from that.

 

I am not discounting all the good info that was posted in the whole thread, I just did not wish to go the add a relay part and simply chose Eddies single wire solution shown in his pdf.

 

Have you don't this to a 2005 with drl. I think that's where my confusion is. I just don't want to ruin anything and take a free mod and turn it into a paid fix for something I did wrong.

If it were me, I’d leave it based on all the gremlins that crop up after these type mods.

 

What type of gremlins? Never really asked anyone how it was after being done.

 

Why do you need you fog lites on all the time, especially during the day? I never understood daytime running lights, kind of stupid really. If you lites are on all the time, they don’t last as long burn out costing you money.and don’t do much except light up for nothing. It’s another way for manufactures of lites to make more money.

 

Other stuff that was working... now doesn’t work or it acts strangely. The good thing is the wires can always be put back to how they were.

 

No, as mentioned earlier, I have 2004 and should also add I do not have DRL but with 40 yr as elec tech for uncle sam, I better not have issues figuring it out or tax payers wasted their money on me

This isnt to have drl fog lights. This would be used for when you want to have any lights on you can have your fog lights on also.

From factory with your high beams on your foglights go off. With this mod you can have your fog lights on also.

Or if you just turn your parking lights on you can turn your fog lights on also, which you cant do from factory.

 

If you don't mind I'll draw up what I believe is the correct way to do it on the 2005 and could you kindly tell me if it looks good?

 

I look at the DRL as a safety feature. Kinda like motorcycles using them so we can see them better. Funny thing is, since I switched to LED lights, more people pull out in front of me. Hoot!

So the fuse onto that I drew in would be am added fuse that I would supply power to from else where. On the bottom side of the switch going to ECU just ground out the switch side of the wire. Hopefully just creating the loop.

My concern is would like screw up the ECU, now having no communication with the switch.

 

Just a quick look at the diagrams shows that the ECU is providing a ground to the fog lamp switch. If the ground is there when the fog lamp switch is on, then the Fog light relay will be energized and the fog lights come on.

If the ECU decides that it doesn’t want to provide a ground (like when the high beams are on) then the Fog lamp relay can’t be energized.

So the solution is to provide a constant ground to the fog lamp switch via the Green/black wire going in to pin 10 on the switch. If it were me, I would cut the G/B wire, (taking control away from the ECU) and ground the input to the switch side (pin 10). Then tape up the ECU side.

Edit: If power for the fog relay is also switched on from the low beams, then the alternate constant power would also need to be added per OP’s drawing above.

Your half way there.

The drl relay switch side is powered by low beam light fuse so I would only come on with low beams on.

How @Drfarquad drew it should be correct.

 

Ahh, good catch. I don’t have the rest of the power schematic in front of me, so Yes, if the relay power is switched rather than constant, and the desire is to have fogs on when nothing else is on, that will do it.

Well than I'll have to report back over the weekend with what happens. Fingers crossed nothing weird happens with the body ECU. I'll try my best to take pictures. Thanks everyone for the help.
