So I recently bought a 2000 Tacoma Xtracab with the 4cylinder engine. No surprise, not enough power. Now im thinking Tundra because they are so much more bang for the buck / besides fuel economy. But wondering what to look for.

Found a 2001 extended cab SR5 with 94,000 miles for 7500. No rust and Frame sprayed to prevent. Hasn't had the timing belt done so keeping that in mind. Seems like a screaming deal...?

I agree, sweet deal. There is no way in hell you would score a 97k 4x4 first gen for that price in socal. The Toyota truck market here is ridiculous at the moment. That truck would go for well over 10k here. Pull the trigger, they are awesome trucks!

Ya just really thinking what I need. I don't tow much, a small boat or trailer, so v8 is overkill... but way cheaper than any v6 tacoma.

Not working a v8 to do what you need isn't a bad thing. I don't know what mpg you can expect from a v6 or the tundra v8 in the extended cab but I can't see it being much worse on the highway. Maybe 2-3 mpg? I don't know but the price of Tacomas around here would negate any better fuel economy unless I drove one constantly. I know I couldn't find a 4.0 Tacoma 4 door without 200k miles for what I paid for my 120k mile double cab tundra.

You'll probably never be upset about the extra room too. They still park just fine and you'll have the power if you decide to go up a couple tire sizes or tow something like a little car or enclosed trailer.

I'd take a good look at the frame. Any sprayed frame is worth a good looking over because it was likely in a rust belt state, and it could've been sprayed to hide corrosion. but 91k and $7500 is a steal if the rust checks out.

It is coming from a rust belt state.. but the owner says when he bought it from the original owner 4 years ago the Frame was his main concern being the year it is too and just to be safe he had to sprayed

Sounds like a good deal to me. I've seen 1st gens on eBay and Autotrader for 10K with over 150K miles. That's a decent price right there.

Crawl under it and check it out. Talk nicely to the guy and offer him $5987 if it looks good. Keep quiet and see what he says.

We are a few states away.. he is sending me some pictures underneath and I have arranged for it to be inspected by his local Toyota dealer. Put my 2000 tacoma online and already have an offer for $10k

Looks border line bubs. I don’t see perforations. I’d need to look in person at a couple areas not pictured. Specifically, the cross-members holding the gas tank where they contact to INSIDE of the chassis. Thats the gnarly spot where it all starts.

This truck year was a recall year. If its been Toyota recall ‘sprayed’ then the recall was ‘satisfied’ and you as the new owner have no recourse in the future. Input the VIN# at Toyota and check the record.

Make the owner take some CLEAR pictures of the inside cross members on both sides as well looking up into the front box frame. Most of what is pictured seems surface with a bit of crusty. You could do a full oil rub and make it brand new looking. Only x-factor are those cross members. If its a little bubbly, you should be fine with no perforations. Go lower $ on this one as its border line.

Honestly that frame looks pretty good for being in a rust state.

That rear shock looks messed up and saw an exhaust hanger with nothing attached to it??

Things to look into but nothing to alarming

I would pass on that truck. There are tons of 1st gen Tundras for sale. There is no reason to buy one multiple states away that you can't lay eyes on. That frame doesn't look horrible but also doesn't look good.

For reference, here is the frame on my 02 as I applied Fluid Film Sunday. Find a truck that isn't from the rust belt.
