ffffff....oil filter housing

Went to drop the oil tonight and have cracked the oil filter housing and snapped off 3 of the 4 tabs on that plastic POS. I have the metal version that I was going to put on tonight, but now I'm in a bad spot and can't drive the truck. Anyone have any ideas?

It seems my options are to have it towed to a Toyota mechanic and see if they can get it off, try to find a mobile mechanic that might have Tundra experience to try and do the job, or see if I can drill a hole through the housing to stick a punch through it to try and get it off that way. But I'm not sure I can get a drill in there with a bit that is big enough that would allow a good sized punch to go in.

I torqued it down last time and in fact didn't even hit the 18lb ft before it stopped turning, so I'm not sure why it won't come off.

Any suggestions on mobile mechanic (SE Aurora, CO) or what else to try would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I was thinking about how I could use something like this to wrap around the housing. Might just order it and give it a try. Thanks for the link!

 

This happened to me as well. I took a sheet of paper, folded it a few times and held it up to the housing and forced the wrench over the paper. Has to be extremely tight. Dealer put mine on so tight I needed a breaker bar to get it off. There is a video of this on YouTube

I broke mine too, managed to get a metal replacement from Advance Auto. Duct tape and channel lock/pipe wrench.

I need to figure out how to make an adapter/relocation/cap pointing up like the Mercedes.

 

My mechanic broke mine. (had all the drivetrain fluids changed) A tab broke off and in the process it cracked the housing causing a leak. Don’t know where or who changed the oil last, bought the truck used.
He called right away and told me, replacement was ordered.
After picking up my ride I went to the parts counter of my local stealership, bought a metal housing and changed out the inner perforated tube to the proper longer one.
It doesn’t have to be over tightened to stick. It’s like the o-ring melts and welds the parts together.

Next oil change (and all other fluids) will be changed by me now that I have the tools and parts.
Pity the tranny isn’t easy to service. I’d like to do a drain and fill without having to putz around with the goofy tranny set up we have in 3rd gens.

 

I broke mine as well. I did the above mentioned with the paper and it worked for me. Also it’s my only vehicle and needed it for work the next day so I put it back on with some oil filter pliers and got my replacement in the mail a few days later. Simply removed again with oil filter pliers and was good to go

 

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to try the paper trick later this morning. But I've already broken the three tabs on one side, so I'm not sure how well it will grip in the filter socket. Really hope it works out. Will post later w results.

 

I’ve also wrapped tape around the bottom of a filter to build it up and make it fit on a filter wrench a little tighter. That might be easier than trying to use paper.

 

It’s such a stupid design. WHY!?!?!
A regular can filter would work just fine, why are we saddled with this goofy ass setup?

 

Yeah, I could use a regular filter wrench and be done with it much quicker and easier.

 

Thanks for posting this. I’ll be doing my first oil change next month, so I just ordered the aluminum housing to avoid this.

My wife’s 2015 highlander came with the aluminum version. Not sure what Toyota was thinking.

 

I did my wife's 4runner a few weeks ago and now I'm shitting bricks that this is going to happen with it as well. I'll have to look to see if the aluminum housing works in the 4runner as well or if they have one available.

 

I can hardly believe it but the paper trick worked! Thanks @Steve and all the other suggestions.

I still had to use a breaker bar and mongo the shit out of it, but it finally budged. Thank goodness.

 

WONDERFUL. Now remember that when putting the filter canister cap back on you only really need it snug plus a widdle biddle bit. And then you'll never have the problem again.

Not cheap, but the wrench will never break and the funnel and especially the drain tool are worth their weight in gold.

If tossing anyway, drill a hole in the side, stick a beefy screwdriver in it and use as leverage to unscrew.
Have done this on regular oil filters before.

 

I bought my truck a few weeks ago. Changing out the plastic filter housing is top on my list of things to do.

Could you try a big pair of channel locks or one of those spin on filter removal tools?

I have been successful in the past using those. Hope you get it off without too much hassle.

 

Luckily I got it off with the paper in the filter wrench trick. Saved me a bunch of money!
