Fyi my best sounding exhaust mod was actually my undercover snorkel where I routed my intake to the cowl below my windshield. I'm tempted to make a video of what it sounds like but my exhaust whistles at full throttle and higher rpm with my helmholtz resonator and it might take away from the video. But it is worth mentioning. No drone from the intake mod whereas most exhaust mods have some drone somewhere in the rpm range

Poke a hole in your muffler bearing and it'll squeal like a little...wait, wrong thread.
It you want loud, just make the same humming sound you used to make when you were 9 years old when you get on it, and save the rest of us to ride along quietly.
    Or install some zoomies.

Interesting thread, lots of different opinions.
My present truck has the oem borla exhaust, deep throaty rumble but not loud enough to annoy. Previous truck had shorty headers and oem exhaust split to dual exit, not as deep as the borla but a bit louder. IMO the shorty headers are a waste of money.
From my personal experience, police do not like high pitched rice burners. I have gotten pulled over quite a bit in the S2000, Acura TLS and a few other Japanese cars. Aside from the S2000, none were really that loud. Pick up trucks in general do not get pulled over as much, in stock form or modified. I'm going on 4 years without a single police stopping me to say hi.

It's a fine line. I like the meaty sound of a V8 to come through in the exhaust, and a bit of volume when I put my foot down, but I hate the jackasses that I can hear coming from 2 miles away.

I went with a BAMuffler 10" system and it's been perfect so far. There is a nice snarl on start up, but then it just quietly purrs/rumbles at idle or old man driving. If I decide to let the idiot in the prius going 10 under the speed limit know what I think as I pass, my foot gets heavy and the exhaust does the talking.

A few more days behind the wheel and I can report that I sometimes get a nice little exhaust burble on Deceleration, some track cars don't even sound this good.

@dirtydeeds is also doing a major sale for Vets. At the very least you should give them a call.

That sounds like a 1950's Chris Craft inboard with through-the-hull exhaust.

I just found out that California has passed a bill that went into effect this past January that makes it illegal to modify your exhaust system in any way, with a $1000 non-correctable fine for each violation and a trip to their Bureau of Auto Repair - whatever that amounts to (Assembly Bill 1824). I heard that one guy with a stock exhaust system changed just the tips on his car from an oval shape to round and was fined the $1000 for the mod, which a later court upheld.:eek2:

Since whatever laws are passed in California seem to eventually make it north on Interstate 5, it is only a matter of time before it will become law in my state. This is a draconian fine that has dampened any thoughts I had about modifying my exhaust just to "improve" the sound. I'll just make a point of attending an auto race and recording the exhaust notes to play on my stereo system whenever the mood strikes me.:turtleride:

[edit] Update...The above was taken from a Calif. Highway Patrol announcement made around the first of the year, as reported. (No cite.) It pretty much takes the most harshest tone possible. It is now noted that the violation is strictly a noise violation for vehicles, including motorcycles, that trip the scale over 95 decibels. There may also be a first time ticket for $25 and not the $1000 depending on the officer. It was stated that the $1000 fine was showing up mostly in Orange and Los Angeles County.

[edit#2] Update as of Oct. 2019...The new governor, under considerable pressure, nixed the part of the bill that made the fines mandatory, changing it back to the "fix-it" ticket that predated this bill. Reports of $1000 fines were apparently exaggerated, as the new info states $197 was the highest fine to date and that most tickets could be $25 or less if the vehicle comes to compliance.

At some point it isn't accidental.
Good luck with that in Utah. There's probably a good positive correlation between gun ownership, Gadsden flags, and modified exhaust around here.

Oh, it's not accidental at all. They really do think they can save the world with laws, regulations, and that everyone else needs to listen to them. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

As unpopular as this bill was it was only time before a modification would be made, and apparently the new governor did it. The latest source I came up with and dated in October is my [edit #2] below. Apparently the sky is not falling. At least not yet (as Chicken Little gets tossed from the hen house).
