They have to give room for fumes expansion. If not then it comes up out of the fuel sending unit assembly.

When my needle gets down to the low point and even when I get the warning, it will take 27 or 28 to fill it. IMO, when your running on empty, you really have 8 or 9 gallons in the tank. We may have submerged fuel pumps that need to have a certain amount of gas in the tank to preserve the pump.

You have a truck that gets horrible mileage. The reserve accounts for the fact you might be towing. If you're towing max capacity that 9 gallon reserve is only worth about 90 miles at highway speeds. Less in stop and go. That's why you don't see anywhere near tank capacity when you fill up.

That’s kinda what I said. When the needle points to near empty I have about 9 gallons. And when I’m not towing it’s about 145 plus miles.

Just got a tundra and was wondering why I could only fill up 31 gallons when it says it’s empty. Good thing I found this post.

Informative discussion. I was wondering whether I even had a 38 gallon tank. I've filled up my new truck four times now and the first three were 29.4-29.8 gallons using the fuel range left as a guide (never let it go to zero). Well the last tank I had a chance to test the tank capacity (after I verified my vehicle did have a 38 gal. tank and it would have 8 gallons left). I have averaged 17.65 MPG combined city/highway/mountain driving (5,800 - 9,000 ft. elevation) so on my return trip from Crested Butte I run the the range indicator to zero (low fuel message) with 70 miles left to drive home. Got home no problem, unloaded the truck then went to fill-up. When I started the truck I got a "refuel" message (slight slope to driveway). Put in 34 gallons so I at least confirmed 34 gallons usable going 588.6 miles on that tank. Next test I'll take my 5 gal. gas can with me for safe measures.

Most of the times when I hit around 0 I still have like 7 gallons left in the tank

I am brand new to this forum and just picked up a 2019 Tundra SR5 off-road and I ran the first tank down to the warning light going on. Filled it all the way up and took 29.1 gallons. I was shocked, I expected it to take 35 or so gallons???

Yes, generally the fuel pump is cooled/lubed/warmed with it's bath in the gasoline, (most vehicles) but as you know the Toyota mothership does not know if you are driving in the Arctic circle today or in 110 degree L.A. traffic.

Another consideration is to think from the Marketing Dept. perspective; What happens when you run out of gas? You have to park it somewhere, usually on the side of the road in a weird spot, very visible.

Now, the casual passer-by probably has no clue that you are JUST out of fuel, and all they see is " A Toyota dead on the shoulder!?! Holy cow!!! What's going on?"

In a different life I worked for General Motors-I notice that the majority of vehicles dead on the shoulder are GM variant products, and that GM STILL has not fixed their DRL wiring debacle. (1 of them is almost always burned out.)

SO, it looks like the moral of the gas mileage computer story is; Toyota has errored on the side of caution, it is not something to deceive anyone. When the light comes on you probably still have at least a 50 mile range left, sounds more like 70-90 of hyper-miling, but why push it.

it is the fuel running through the pump that cools it; not submerging the pump.

also, not all fuel pumps are at the bottom of the tank or even in the tank. if the pump needed to be submerged for cooling, then an external pump wouldn't last a week.

I have 1/2 a mind to load up a gas can in the back and push it out to see how much is usable. Not completely run out but try to get it down to a gallon or so. My tank is the smaller one but drove it down to 2 miles left and noticed it doesn't come off of that number. I calculated 6 gallons still left

    Correct, and correct.

I'm changing out a failed fuel pump right now on a motorcycle, it is an external unit which is a known weakness on this particular KTM model.

I did not say that all pumps are internal. MOST are internal for durability and security and operational reasons.

So, it appears you have ignored everything else I have noted, to tell me I am wrong. That's fine, Good luck.

I think Toyota intentionally builds in the buffer of extra fuel in the tank when it gets low.

Its the same on my 08 2nd Gen Tundra as well as in my dads 2017 3rd Gen Tundra where you still have extra fuel even once fuel level shows low and distance shows zero.

When you remember that fuel pump assemblies are a pain to replace, and also that running a fuel pump dry will burn them up fast (since the gasoline is actually what lubricates the bearings of the pump), it makes sense that Toyota would build in a buffer to prevent premature fuel pump failure.
I think they want to give you a chance to fuel without risk of added wear on an assembly that is easy to failure with low fuel and a pain for dealerships by dropping tanks.
Plus seeing how many people test "how far can I go once I hit zero miles left" it makes sense if an engineer at Toyota would want to stop our curiosity from turning into costly warranty claims on fuel pumps for dealerships that sold you a new truck!:goingcrazy::D

Just filled the other day after the fuel light came on (15 miles until empty) and I only got 31.93 gallons in (my largest fill to date).

I just put gas in my Tundra for the first time the other day. I saw that I was getting close to 500 miles on the tank, so I kept going and ended up with 506 miles on the tank. I was at 6 miles to empty when I filled up and it took 33.9 gallons. Low fuel light never came on, which has me a little confused. The low fuel light on my Tacoma came on religiously at 25 miles to empty. I was expecting the warning to show at some point on the Tundra, but it never did. Seems a bit odd based on other posts here.

I can't believe this is 6 pages of ........what? People who cannot read? No disrespect intended, but if you truly believe that the fuel idiot lights/computer/mpg estimates from the truck computer are a substitute for being aware of your next fuel stop, we have bigger problems in America than I thought.....wow.

Not sure which post you’re referring to? If you’re referring to my post, I was simply pointing out that it was odd that my low fuel light never came on with only 4 gallons left in the tank. Never said I relied on that for anything. I’ve only been driving for 18 years and I’ve not run out of gas yet, so no problems here!

Excellent 1701, nope not intended for you directly. It is hard to discern a real "problem" vs. some peoples' probable OCD, and finding things to complain about on a public forum per mostly perfect vehicles.

Yes, we all can appreciate making improvements and helping others become aware of scenarios. IS this tongue-in-cheek complaining or goofy outrage, in order to just find something wrong?

In my almost 35 years of driving it goes like this; using the trip meter, a calculator, and the amount of fuel put into vehicle I configure the MPG. This also gives me an idea of the vehicles' range(s) per miles travelled in the trip meter AND what the fuel gauge says. Today, using the "notes" section of my i-Phone, I can enter the details I find pertinent to said vehicle. [Not sure how/why this needs to be specified with people buying these trucks, but I guess we never can assume too much anymore.]

I have been guilty of running very, very low a couple of times. I live in an area of very few gas stations and long hauls in hilly country. But the first close call was because a family member borrowed the truck for the weekend and I told her : low fuel. Fill up now. She didn’t . When I started the truck I realized she had driven a couple hundred kilometres (Canada) and I had no idea how much was left. It took 138 liters on a 144 litre specifies capacity . That is about 1.5 US gallons left. The second time was my fault . Towing 7000 lbs in hilly and mountainous terrain, I planned to fill up about halfway . It had no gasoline - they had run out of fuel in their tanks. Next and last station is about 80% of the way home and .... the power was out in the entire community. I decided to go for it and made it- that fillup was 140 liters out of 144 liter capacity , about 1 gallon US remaining. Worst of all , I carry a five gallon Jerry can and thought it was full but.... I’d forgotten that I had used it in a boat.... good lessons learned . The last incident was over a year ago so I don’t think any damage was done.

I think Toyota just has large large reserves built into their software.

If people want to talk about filling up their gas tank, let them. If they want to talk about the texture and color of rocks for 6 pages, let them. It's not hurting you so let it be and ignore it.

...."the texture and color of rocks..." conversation would be in the Off Topic area thread, "let's get baked and talk rocks", thread. Sure, cool.

Read PLEASE; There is NOT a problem with the fuel system. The Toyota fuel tanks are REALLY the sizes that the Toyota Corporation has stated, nobody is getting ripped off with smaller fuel cells. There is NO reason to start a small claims/class action lawsuit. (Yes, somebody has suggested that.) Yes, if people want to talk for 17 more pages about their independent results for fuel fill ups, awesome. Yes, where is the ignore/block button.

Just to throw in my .02 on this highly productive thread.....
I just traded in my '16 Limited Tundra for a '19 1794 Tundra. On my '16, every time I filled the tank it said I had 414 miles range. The dealer gave me the '19 with a full tank, and the range says 560 miles. Same size tank. Hmmmmm…..maybe the new truck just doesn't know my driving habits yet - LOL
