Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum and stoked to find this! Just bought a 2004 Tundra 4.7L TRD 4WD in excellent condition with 82k (A baby!) on the clock and I am looking to make some good moves for the longevity and performance of this beauty! It was bought new in 2005 and has had one owner (older gentleman) who has kept up on things but wanted to get rid of it as it was coming up to major maintenance milestones (timing belt, wp, etc.) and he had just bought a brand new f150. Silly move!! It was garage kept and rarely driven in the winter. Some minor surface rust but has been oil coated over the years. I have replaced the bank 2, o2 sensor driver side and believe it will need new exhaust system in the next couple years. The oil pressure gauge reads low sometimes and will move higher as I accelerate. My only other querk is that it will sometimes jump between first and second, then slightly between second and third gears. Oil pressure? O2 sensor? funky transmission? Any insight here would be great.

I will be using it to tow a solid load a few times a week for a couple months a year but otherwise not doing much more then transporting tools and toys. I want to prepare it for a lot of driving and towing through this winter.

So What do you guys recommend? I am open to direction as this is my first Toyota and V8!

    Do you use premium gas?
Should I switch to synthetic now or wait until higher miles?
Which fluids should I have flushed and/or replaced?
Should I have it undercoated again?
Would you have it lifted for towing?
What shocks are best for towing?

    Thanks you in advance!

That doesn't sound good. How does the fluid look? Do a search here about servicing the transmission. It's very easy.

    No

That's really a personal preference. If you want to run synthetic I don't know why you would wait.

I would replace all fluids. Front diff, transfer case, rear diff, power steering and bleed the brakes.

What state are you in? Looks like TN or the Appalachians. I probably wouldn't undercoat it.

Get the timing belt/water pump service done soon. Run the VIN at your local dealer to confirm if the LBJs have ever been replaced or had the recall done, and go ahead and replace the lower ball joints (and uppers, too) if they haven't been done recently.

Oil pressure gauge reading low is normal. Definitely do the timing belt and water pump sooner than later.

Check the spark plugs and replace if you think they may be original. I thought I had changed the plugs in my wifes sequoia when I bought it, but I had not and it recently melted a plug and blew it out of the head. The electrodes were super worn and may have even been original with 230k on them.

No on the premium gas. I run synthetic oil just because I like to stretch my oil change intervals.

How much will you be towing? Do you use a weight distributing hitch? For towing you are concerned with the springs and not the shock. I tow a 3k trailer with weight distribution hitch and I am fine on stock springs.

Do you want to lift it? Bilstein 5100's are a great and economical way to level it, if that is what you are after.

    Welcome!

First things first, all fluids. Trans, engine oil, diff’s, t-case, air filter and fuel filter. Those are easy and cheap to do. Also throw in some new plugs as they are extremely easy and also cheap to do. NGK platinums run $45 for the set.

No on premium but I run synthetic since I get it for free from work. I’d have no issues running conventional at 3k intervals or synthetic at 5k. I’d personally wait till 100k to change the water pump and t-belt but that’s me.

Sounds like there is a little bit of a rust issue. I’d be inspecting everything to make sure it’s all good to go. Sounds like a good truck overall!
