But I would imagine you still put some away into a savings account. something that I have not had the self control to do for a while now. only when I need to save up for something do I actually put money into my account. otherwise its got enough in it to help pay for a weeks worth of gas.

Hindsight is 20-20. If my parents invested $1000 in netflix or Amazon when they first started up we'd be millionaires. If i could time travel I'd go back to 1997 and bring $3000 with me. I'd give it to my parents and say hey, invest this in a company called amazon. it'll make you rich in 21 years

I know it sounds cliche, but I’ve been on both ends of that spectrum, and can say for certain that money isn’t that important in the end. Obviously we need it to survive and take care of our families, but it absolutely doesn’t make a difference beyond that.
We do well, have nice things, and don’t struggle. I’m not rich by any means, but things are good in that department.

That said, I was much happier when I was broke. Sure, there was stress over covering the bills, but most people live with that. Money was the only real worry I had in those days.

I couldn’t buy an expensive knife back then, but you know what I could do? I could sleep like a baby, sleep until noon on a weekend if I wanted to. It’s probably been ten years since I slept through the night now, and I don’t remember the last time I made it past 5 am on a day off.

The first Income tax return my wife and I filed as a married couple was a combined $11k. Even in 1994 that wasn’t much. Two people survived on eleven thousand dollars, and it didn’t get much better for a really long time.
We’ve come a long way from there in 25 years. We’ve gained a lot of things, but I’d trade any of it for some of the things I lost along the way. Things that once they’re gone, you just can’t get back, no matter what.

I’m not trying to get on a soapbox here. I just wanted to tell you, and anyone else that may need to hear it, that money is a tool, nothing more. Never let financial success be your goal. Make happiness your goal. Make a life you can be proud of, and try to be as good a person as you can be. Do what you can for others, in any way you are able.

Maybe financial success comes your way, but I can promise it won’t make a damned bit of difference in how happy you are. I’m sure I’m not the only person here who would tell you the same.

Sorry everyone for getting too deep. I’ll now return to my normal jackassery.
