What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Brake Bleed.
So I know the answer is no, but still I have to ask.

Had the brake lines replaced.
Picked it up & the brakes sucked. Took it back & they re-bled the system, said there were no air bubbles. Everything looked good.
So I took it back, drove it & they still sucked. Figured there was air somewhere that would work itself out.
Then yesterday I put the truck in 4WD for a little while for monthly exercise.

I swear the brakes work better now after running it in 4X4.
That isn't possible right? There's no way A would effect B is there?

 

Unless the 'dhm' drives the truck through high water.... ;-)

 

I had 2 cars that would get 40 mpg in the 1980’s. A Corolla and a Civic. Had a friend with a Diesel VW Rabbit that would get 75mpg! And todays ‘energy efficient ‘ cars are no better. I guess its the emissions and safety stuff making the numbers worse?

You can see where that oil enters the TBody from the PCV hose.

 

Yes I used a small pump to remove most of the old fluid in the reservoir and removed it from the truck. I cleaned it out with brakecleen. The filter looked in good shape afterwards no holes or anything. I installed the reservoir back in and filled it with fresh fluid. No more whining groaning from pump. Job done. Thanks for the headsup on cleaning out the reservoir. Try that. It's not difficult just takes a little time.

 

That port you put your fancy arrows on is actually the coolant line going into the TB, so I’m not exactly sure how oil would enter thru there, but you aren’t one of those face and body guys so maybe you know more than I! The dirtiest side was the side towards the engine. Upon start up idle was high, then settled down, but still kinda rough and still flashing a CEL. I’m about to go get a drive cycle into her and see if she starts acting right , if not I’ll hook up a scanguage and see what code is thrown. I had one pin bend a smidge when putting the plug back on, but I gently pushed it into place and the clip seated, checked all other clips for full engagement and they looked good

 

Thanks for the correction. Even a retired hand model can learn a new move. I know our 2002 TB has the PCV hose that drops in from the top. Looks like oil wash or something on yours clearly coming from that pipe area on yours. Hope you get it worked out soon.

 

Look at you, you’ve got a real throttle cable!! The 06 are fly by wire, so I don’t have any of that extra stuff you pictured. I think my pvc drops in right after the TB on the intake plenum.
After sticking my finger on the deck of the plenum when the TB was off, and lifting up a wet finger of oil(I actually had Black Mamba gloves on,you’d like them) I will look into doing a oil catch can on this truck, help keep that intake cleaner.

 

Did a well needed swap today! Trying out a new brand from 1a auto and all for about $90 shipped. Anyone have experience with them?

 

• Installed Atoto a6 pro radio
• Installed Atoto ac-4486 backup camera
• Installed OBDII scanner using Torque app
• Installed Alpine 6.5" in the rear doors
• Installed white led's in the center dash since 3/4 of the bulbs were burnt out - Cargo lamp wasn't deep enough to take the LED bulb, unfortunately. Left it empty for the time being.

 

Are these the 90-221HD springs? I was thinking about these, but I always have a good 500+ lbs in the bed.

 

Diesel Rabbits could maybe get 50 mpg at 55mph on a long flat road. I was running 75 - 80 over a mountain range. An aerodynamic GMC motorhome with a 455 might get 12mpg tops on a long flat road at 55 mph, maybe 7 - 9 mpg at 75. Not to mention our crap California gas we get now. When I get gas in Arizona, I get about 1.5 mpg better.

How do you like the atoto a6? I've been eyeing something like that for mine. Did you have a factory amp? What did you use to hook it all up?

@KarmaKannon - To be honest, it's a bit early to give good feedback. My first thoughts are, it's very impressive, especially for the price point. I use to be heavy into audio years ago and double din tvs were minimum $800-1000. So, to have an android platform for only $260ish that actually works is impressive to me.

I did go with the IPS panel version which I think is the highest-end version.

The only quirk I've noticed so far is the bottom right/left of the screen seems a bit off for the touchscreen. I'd try to hit settings and mute the radio. It COULD be me being a little less than pinpoint accurate but happened a few times and I'm pretty sure I'm hitting closer to the settings than mute but it'll still mute.

Still, a lot to test out and get some real usage before I say it's a winner.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll start looking for something similar but that's xm ready. I think having xm again and being able to watch my trans temp easily would really make my driving experience much more enjoyable.

I posted before about using noico deadener panels inside my doors. I used 10 total on all 4 doors. 3 in each front and 2 in each rear. I can say with more highway miles that it is noticeably quieter. I'm actually surprised. I'm going to order more and do the area behind the rear seat and maybe some areas on the floor. I think the roof is where I'm getting most my wind noise from now. Anyway I'm very pleased so far.

I was actually wondering how your truck was doing. You bring up a question I've been meaning to ask. When I have my foot on the brake and I move the shifter from park to reverse I can sometimes feel a change in brake pressure. I didn't know if that was normal.

My brakes feel pretty good since going to SS lines, bleeding the system and getting fresh fluid in but I think you're right about SS brake lines. I don't think I gained any stopping power with SS lines. I think any perceived change is from bleeding the system.

 

I am in Salt Lake. As of right now I have @KarmaKannon interested in them. If he doesn't want them, you will be next on the list.

 

They are not the HD springs, just standard duty. It seems as though the HD version lifts you another 1 or so.

I plugged in the scanguage and pulled codes, p0300,0303, 0307. All related to a misfire and specific holes 3,7. I cleared them and will run it again tomorrow, I think it was because the fuel rail was bone dry and that’s what caused the misfires. It does drive wayy better, gears hold a lil longer and response is more defined in the pedal; the throttle mapping in these fly by wire feel way better than our 4runner; were lucky!!

No, to your first supposition. I was not making a comparison.

To your conflation... introduced into your negative supposition (see pic). I just found this on my first internet search and laughed! Truth is the 75mpg memory was so long ago that I was guessing. Most of these newer Diesel Rabbits estimates look to be getting 45mpg on MODERN diesel fuel.

My anecdotal story was based on desperately finding some change between the seat cushions (about .90 worth read ‘cents’) which was enough for about a gallon of DIESEL at that time (maybe it was .70cents?) and driving to our location about 75 miles away. No biggie. I stand corrected by you here.

Maybe I was wrong on my Civic and Corolla estimates, too?

 

I'm about to find out. Just finished bleeding the master cylinder again, this time while it is in the truck. Got my wife to do the footwork while I crawled around bleeding the corners again. Didnt see any bubbles on the brakes surprisingly but there was a bit in the master cylinder. Had to jump start my poor truck and on my driveway they seem to work.

I know for sure my pedal needs adjusting and the sensor for my brake lights does too. Its showing my brakes on when it shouldn't.

 

Have you tried the whole; go on a dirt road and lock em up good, kinda action?
