So after hitting some way too damned early cold temps here in October....I was looking at adding the remote start feature.
    Never had a remote start.
What do you guys recommend? Not sure I want to have dealer do it as they would be $500.00 is my guess.
I know my way around a truck so I can do the work myself.
Any good plug and play units out there?
    Mfr's?
    Linkys?

    Cheers.

    following...
Tons of threads on this already, but overwhelming. I'd also like to add one that doesn't use the factory remote. I know there are some that change the functionality of the factory fob to start the truck when you hit the lock button 3x, but it seems silly to fire all of the locking mechanisms 3x every time. I dont mind an extra fob on the key ring. Also, i'd love one that could work .5 miles away with the 2-way communication....

What @texasrho83 said. Tech 12 Volts is running a group buy right now on completely plug and play remote starts (using factory fob) includes video installation instructions on the group buy page.

Hi there. I would with the Viper car alarm start system. A lot of people swear up and down with this system. It even has the new phone app where you can control start your truck and find your car on your phone. I plan on going to downtown LA to purchase mine. Good luck with your decision.

Appointment Friday for a Compustar with a pair of Prime G15 one way remotes. Good for 1000 feet (way better range than stock fobs). Contemplated going with a 2 way remote for start confirmation, but I'm really never that far away to justify the extra costs.

we switch from drone mobile to mycarcontrols.com phone app system. compustar/drone mobile charge $60/yr for the yearly phone app basic plan and if you lapse your sub, it costs an additional $35 to reactivate your account.

with mycarcontrols, it uses the same hardware as the drone mobile but the sub is only $30/yr and you get gps location to boot that you dont get with drone/compustar. (i think the reason the cost went up is due to moving from cdma to 4LTE as wireless providers are phasing out cdma support)

we only use the app to remote start since we have a distance from parking spot to the building (and the building has a horrible faraday cage effect on signals) and use the oem fob to unlock/lock the vehicle.

Does the truck shut off when door is opened like the factory one? I received a price of $275 installed and not sure what to do.

It does not shut off when the door is opened. When you go in your truck if you hit the brake it will shut off. Cat be programmed for 15 or 25 minutes.

if you have a PTS system, it will shut off, no matter the model for toyota. if you have a physical key it will not shut off.

from what i have been told, on the PTS systems, the fob and ecu generates a new code when you unlock the vehicle, hence the reason the vehicle shuts off since the code to start is no longer valid.

i do know that PTS systems on the toyota brand they usually have to unlock the vehicle, give control over to the remote start unit, start the vehicle, then the remote start module locks the doors. this is the way that they bypass the security code temporarily until you grab the door handle to unlock the vehicle.

I've been very happy with the Drone Mobile system. Unlimited range, can leave your keys in the truck and open the doors and/or start with your phone. Can monitor the status of your battery, and temp inside the cab if those things are important to you. GPS and a few other features available at an additional cost.

If you pay for 3 years up front, cost is only $40 per year.. I was not aware of the My Car Control info posted above. When my 3 year plan is coming up, I'll check it out to see if it makes sense to change.

the biggest thing is the gps you have to pay for the upgraded package on drone mobile while on mycar its standard with the basic $40 plan.

Looks good, will definitely consider when my plan is up for renewal.. GPS not really necessary unless its stolen since I'm the only one that drives it, but a nice feature..

    Wow....
Some of those remote systems you guys have are way too much for what a cat like me needs.
Grab remote...push button...truck starts. Keep it simple I say.

Don't really need the unit that makes an espresso, tells me my horoscope, or tells me a bird shat on my hood.:D:D:D

i assume the 'hatch' icon is unused? Would it possibly work with a pop-and-lock? only unlocking the tailgate??? THAT could be cool..

I'm leaning towards the Compustar, since that what a local place that installs works with, and they seem very affordable, too. I dont need all of the bells and whistles - just something that can start the truck in the driveway from the comfort of my home in the wintertime. 3000' feet with two way communication seems sufficient for $100 price i'm seeing on Amazon. Although, i admit, this seems like a lot of 'stuff' to add to the truck just to make it start...

Did you have a Compustar alarm/remote start with the Drone module?
That is what I have and I really like the mycarcontrols over the drone mobile...
Does the mycarcontrols give alerts when the 1st or 2nd stage is tripped?

Wondering if my current system would work...

I have the unit sold by tech12volts and bought the mycar cell module. Starting a vehicle with a phone is fun. I'm zooooooming into the future.

I don’t mean to hijack this, but i have a dumb question. Is there any benefit to the oem version vs these aftermarket ones?

OEM version has a stupid feature where you open any door, and the engine shuts off. Aftermarket it will stay on until a specified time, or you depress the brake pedal.

I really wanna get that as an add on to my compustar. That's not a bad price for a 3 year plan. My only fear is that all the latest reviews are saying that the app is bad now
