Read this article today and it's disgusting how an "American" automaker can and wants to pursue this.

TL;DR
*GM creates a key switch that kills hundreds of people and injured hundreds more.
*GM files for bankruptcy.
*GM is now a "7 year old" company free from all lawsuits that it's former "108 year old" previous company is at fault for.

 

Sucks. However any car company in a similar position would likely try to get the same ruling. Especially with billions of dollars in potential future settlements on the line.

I don't know enough about bankruptcy to say this, so I shouldn't, but I'm going to anyway. It seems like some people/businesses use it as a loophole.

 

I'd really like to buy a truck from an American Owned company but couldn't do it in 2010, so I probably won't be in the market again.

 

Ask yourself this... What is American?

Toyota designs and builds their trucks in America by Americans......despite their additional plant in Tijuana that builds Tacomas.

Yes the end profit goes to a Japanese company. But NO MATTER WHAT VEHICLE an individual buys they are supporting a foreign country PERIOD. Name any car company, and you are supporting their born nation as well as a supporting nation.

An exception may be high end exoctics....Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc.

I had the same thoughts before buying my Tundra, and I am still supporting Americans. American truck drivers, assembliers, designers, technicians, and so on....Toyota Japan just gives Toyota America the capital and approval to do as they please within reason.

By American Owned,I meant PARENT COMPANY or "owned by Americans", GM and Ford are American Owned. Unless I'm missing something REALLY obviousI wasn't refering to "content of parts" but Company Ownership.We've been buying Toyota vehicles since our '77 Corolla wagon, back when there was very little American influence in their design.

Glad you got a good GMC, Chris. Regardless of where my two recent Silverado 1500's (2011 an 2014) were built (Ft Wayne), they had far too many recalls/STBs/updates...2014 Silverado had 11 in 2 ½ years plus stupid things like 'production run' issues with dash lights. And issues I had that they refuse to fix. There was no quick oil change because they always had something else that needed updating or checking, turning an oil change into a 2+ hour ordeal. According to GM-Trucks forum, they still haven't fixed their radios and very bad vibration problems...they just have to change designs every year now and quality is not as good at it used to be...the last two recalls were for the 'trailer hitch platform' and 'driver seat belt' that may become separated in a crash...really? Ridiculous. Want to know why I now own a Tundra? I want a more stable truck like my 2002 Tundra. I don't need all of those Chevy gadgets that don't work. (now off soap box rant).

 

The "new" GM is Cleary a successor entity to the original GM and should be liable for any issues with the faulty vehicles which caused harm to purchasers.

As to the what is American issue. I could give a rats ass where the money goes at the end, whether it be to an "American" company or to a foreign company as neither is sharing the wealth with me. I do care where the vehicle is designed and built and in the instance of the Tundra that would be in America where my countrymen are being paid to create the product I purchase. As long as my money goes to support American working men and women I am satisfied that I made the proper choice. Especially when the product I purchase is one that will deliver to me years of reliable service.

We should all strive to support our fellow countrymen through purchasing American manufactured products.

As for the Americans who choose not to work but to suck off the teat of the government; may they go to hell.

Technically these are all public companies owned by their shareholders so that is where the profits will end up technically speaking.

TMNA is a US sub of a Japanese entity, but if I am correct they are paying US tax on profits from the North American US based operations.

 

Government gets involved at the wrong time. They should have left GM and its subsidiaries to fail. But honest american lives and dollars buying tainted products dont matter. Sickening. Pike the at faults heads.
