Aftermarket Exhaust

I’m curious what would happen if you ran one 1/4 wave resonator connected at each end on both tailpipes. Keith at Dirty Deeds? Sort of a big h pipe. Or perhaps a true helmholtz resonator (with Chamber) connected to both pipes. I can’t say I’ve seen that done.

 

Interesting idea. Not sure if you have a spot on both tailpipes that would allow a crossover to line up perfectly level and perpendicular. Might be a lot of stress on the crossover too, based on the length and the fact that the tailpipes bounce around.

 

I respect this and am curious what your end game is? Are you trying to find the perfect blend of power and sound? I love the TRD Duals and tell myself that if Toyota wanted it to have an H pipe, then it would have come with it. Exhaust systems have always been a white wale for me but being a mfg exhaust system helps put my mind at ease knowing I have exactly what Toyota says is good for this truck.

 

I’ve always been curious about the physics of exhausts and like to see how changes impact sound - mostly on my Chevelles and Novas.

That said, I didn’t plan on doing all this to the Tundra. My truck was a dealer leftover heavily discounted, but came with the TRD exhaust. I really liked the exhaust under acceleration, but hated the helicopter sound on the highway. I read that it smoothed out over time so I figured I would give it a chance. It did mellow some, but not enough for the amount of highway driving I do. Other forum members complained about the same thing and the H pipe was an inexpensive mod that was recommended. That was the start of everything. My goal was to eliminate the pulsating chopper sound, but then my curiosity took over.

Plus I figured I could share information with other forum members. I would not recommend buying a TRD exhaust and then doing all this. But for those with trucks that already have the TRD exhaust, here are some options.

 

I get the whole peace of mind aspect, but that can get pretty boring for some... the desire to modify for whatever reason is strong in many vehicle owners. Coming up with the perfect combination that produces the right exhaust sound as well as more power is very rewarding, but it's also a very individual thing and not easily accomplished. I am up for the challenge, and I am very close to nailing down the perfect combination for my truck.

How do you like your dirtydeeds exhaust?

 

You're sway bar appears to be installed incorrectly. Did you do that for a reason?

 

I like it... it's almost perfect.

 

I lowered the rear suspension by putting the axle on top of the leaf springs, the sway bar, shorter end links, and shorter rear shocks are installed correctly.

 

So true. I was constantly modifying my older muscle cars - cams, heads, gears, transmissions (and of course exhaust).

That's a mentality that never goes away.

 

You could feel the pulsating chopper sound in this one, it was fun back then but I would hate it today.
.30 over ram air 455 H.O. true dual exhaust with the best turbo mufflers the 70's had to offer, but no H pipe.

 

Looks like grandpa's car. Built 396, Grand National 2004r with 3000 rpm stall. Big turbo mufflers (without crossover) couldn't mask the thump. Didn't rev low enough to get the chopper sound.

Hated the day I sold it. But, family first.

 

It's funny...

I joke with my wife that I can remember the cam specs in engines that I owned 25 years ago, but don't remember being at half the weddings I attended.

 

My custom 3 muffler cat-back next to the factory cat-back with the little factory resonator that Toyota eventually deleted, the Dirty Deeds cat-back is far less restrictive than the factory muffler. The Y-pipe feeding into the factory tail-pipe prevents low end power loss, the 3rd muffler helps keep the volume down per my request. My research revealed that 2-into-1 systems have a dramatic effect on power from 3500 to 7000 rpm.

 

I guess the Y acts as a crossover, which helps with the torque. I actually did notice the torque difference with the TRD exhaust with and without H pipe. Still prefer without for the sound - even though I do lose a little down low.

Are 2 into 1 better or same as duals at the high end?

 

The power should be about the same, but the 2 into 1 is typically quieter & cheaper.

 

I figured there was a reason. Does it perform the same in that configuration?
