What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Thank you. I cut the emblem using a Oscillation cutter with a straight carbide blade. I sprayed with cans and in this case doing the entire tailgate was best. I removed it and did the prep and spray on sawhorses. My side doink I tried the blend method due to wanting to keep it on a smaller scale and save my TRD sticker! Went through the learning curve and had to re-do. Anytime you paint its best to do the entire section.

Anything is possible. Back in the day I’d have been a youtubes star, but Chris Fixx has stolen the limelight with his sexy hands.

Here is the paint I used. Go to the site and plug in your info. Damn good match. Their clear coat is good, but not perfect. Thats magic mojo stuff to get it right.

That color match is very nice. I almost believe you could spray it and not even use a clear coat which would yield a nice Matte Finish. I leaning towards that route for the future.

The problem I had was with the Bondo’d areas and the gray primer. I think spraying clear coat over the Bondo first would be better vs. using primer as the succeeding finish coat yields a better finish where I did an experiment. This is all lacquer spray so its quick dry and the spray tips on the cans are top notch.

 

how many cans of base and clear did you use?

One can base on the tail gate doing multiple light coats (10-15). One and a half cans clear coat multiple light coats (10-15).

 

I just got back from a week long camping / fishing trip. Due to the different types of lakes we were going to. I needed to bring two boats. One for bigger Lakes and one for the lakes that are four wheel drive access only. This means I needed some sort of rack for the bed of my truck to put my small 10ft Jon Boat on. I'm not done with it yet but close enough to work for the trip. I made the whole thing out of Unistrut. It side lifts from the driver side to the passenger side allowing me access to the gear in my bed. I did order two 100 lb 35 inch gas strut lift assists but didn't receive it before I left for my trip. I bed lined the whole rack which I am not happy with the final product. I used Dupli-Color bed liner. I prepped according to what the can said. After a few days of use though the bed liner has started to peel off. I'm going to have to scrape the whole thing and reapply with something better. I found the Dupli-Color to be very brittle and not impact resistant at all. Does anybody have any suggestions on a better bed liner product? Here's what I came up with for the rack.

6in rcd lift in the front, 4 in lift with custom leaf springs in the rear.

 

@Brown Bear Any chance we could get a couple closeup pics of the attachments to the truck bed's upper railing - components/assembly? Any chance of you doing another thread with its design and construction laid out before us? [Not asking too much, am I?]

I don't currently have a need for such a rack as my boat is a pontoon, and easily disassembled, but...It would be nice to load the pontoon above my gear, and fully inflated, when hopping between points, lakes/camping spots, as the fishing dictates.

 

I will do a write-up on the rack once I get time to finish rebed line in it and putting on the gas Pistons. I will try to get some time tonight to take some pictures for you though.

 

Unistrut is usually galvanized or has some weird coating on it. Would that affect the bed liner?

 

I’ve got some thick soft foam pads from shipping shit at work.. seems like it would be a good noise killer in the cabin, any spots y’all can think of to put some of it?

I sanded it pretty good with 80 grit. Sprayed it off with an air compressor. Then cleaned it with alcohol. I would think the sanding would have made it bond.

 

Anyone ever mounted off road driving lights directly to the bumper? I wouldn’t mind doing that instead of using a bull bar

So for anyone wondering about progressive AAL, I always recommend Wheelers Off Road over all others and here's why.

 

It would be interesting to measure the Icon and Wheelers to see what the difference is.

 

Galvanized is a difficult surface to make accept a coating. Ospho will help pre-treat the metal by changing the composition. After following the instructions, I’ve had great success with the Rustoleum Bedliner so that is one recommendation. Even a regular enamel coating will work post Ospho.

Two things you are up against right now are getting the existing failing bedliner coating off and most critical is the scraping of your boat on the painted metal bracket. Might want to consider screwing some type of plastic/hard composite trim at the contact points.

 

I think new leafs is certainly going to give.you the best results but be the most expensive as.well. however I think an economic option in your case would be to swap the icon for the wheelers and throw the overload back in when you do. Then sell the icon set. Probably best to sell it to a taco owner as they are lighter. Just food for thought.

Your requested fuel injector instructions. Most important piece of advice is to not lose those banjo fitting washers (17mm nut).

 

I'm just going to wait and eventually get new leaf packs. I feel like at a certain point the AAL is just a band-aid(even the wheelers). My truck will be 20 years old before I know it so that's a good run for factory leaf packs. But in hindsight, I should have tried the Wheeler's. I just thought it made sense to stick with ICON since I have all their other products and they generally have a good reputation.

 

I think that's a good choice. I also think the icon AAL was designed for a Tacoma but fits Tundra, similar to the other AALs. So maybe icon didn't account for the extra weight of our trucks. Not sure.
