Key Fob Replacement 2002 Tundra

So, I lost one of the key fobs for my 2002 Tundra SR5. I still have one, and I am wondering if I can buy an aftermarket or used key fob and program it myself.

I did this on my old Lexus, bought a used key fob, but the dealer wanted $350 to program it to my car, so I never did it, and it was wasted money. Don't want to be in the same spot again.

Just get another FOB for $15 and you can program it yourself for free. The key (no pun intended) is knowing which system you vehicle has...factory or port installed. Give me the number on the back of your FOB that works and I'll tell you what you need.

I have done this on 5 different Toyota vehicles of that era...it's not hard for any of the systems when you know which you have.

That remote will only work if your FCC ID is ELVATDD or ELVAT1B....is either one of those numbers on the back of yours?

And you say the number is BAB237181-022 are you sure it's not BAB237131-022?

I too have only the one FOB and I am following this thread hoping to solve the same problem for my 2002 Limited. My remaining FOB has the number you listed, namely - BAB237131-022. The factory sticker listing the installed equipment lists a PN ALARM...Factory.

 

Ok, here is the deal...it looks like you have an RS3000 dealer installed system. Go to this link and read ALL of it...it has the directions to program your new FOB (thought he fob should come with it too). Now, you don't have to buy the used fob from them, but you will need to locate your RS3000 ECU to program your new fob when you get one. According to that site, you can get a key fob with either BAB237131-022 or BAB237131-056....the 56 being the updated but allegedly interchangeable fob.

Here is a link to a thread with some posts on finding the RS3000 ECU in a 2002 Tundra. If I was you I would locate that before I ordered anything.

Some folks on this thread say that BAB237131-56 will not work, but that you need BAB237131-022. BAB237131-022 for $30

Yes I did but I wasn't clear on whether there were additional numbers associated with the FOB. Thanks for the info as I charge ahead...

 

Nope, the FCC ID of a known to work key fob is the key to figuring everything else out. Once you have that, it's pretty straightforward. It's more of a pain if you think you have remote lock/unlock but don't have a known good fob with the FCC ID.

I just got a replacement from the dealership for $41.30 and programmed it myself off of a YouTube instructional video. Very easy. I had one fob already making it easy to show the dealer and say I wanted the exact same one. They tried to sell me a 160$ version but I explained it was dealer installed( which I knew after finding the same remote for way less. It was not a factory installed system. You can opt for an aftermarket which will work fine I just like having the light at the top and Toyota symbol.

 

My truck’s fobs got lost during shipping. I checked with owner and had my VIN# verified by the local dealer which fob I needed. I ordered 2 exact replacements based on the part # the dealer gave me about 6 months ago and no matter which instructions I use I have yet to program either of them. I’m locking and unlocking my doors the ole fashion way! Any ideas???

 

Looks like you have a DC...the directions to program these on the web mostly suck...here are the instructions from the FSM. I have used them 3 times to program key fobs for my 2006 DC. They are a little tricky to follow...of the 3 times I've followed them, one time I got it the first time, but the other two times it took me 2-3 tries each time but always eventually worked...good luck...

Hi, just wanted to let you know that this thread really helped!

I inherited a 2006 Dbl Cab from my dad when he had to go into memory care.
Although he really tried to take care of the truck, he's 89 so there are some things to take care of that he never fixed.

For instance he had 7 keys to the truck, but he only had 1 remote.

So using the frequency identifying info here (mine is HYQ12BBX), I ordered this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/for-Toyota...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 to see if it would program. I figured if it didn't, I could always return it. But using the instructions quoted by speedtre, it programmed on the 3rd try and I took it to a local shop and had it cut. I've since ordered as second as I like them so much more than the stock remote. So $17 for each key, $0 for the programming, and $2 to have the local lock shop cut the profile.

I did add a little bit of grip tape on the backs though since without them they are pretty slick and I ended up dropping them a lot.

 

Hey guys, so I copied this post to the tee. Programmed the key fob no problem, had the key cut at the toyota dealership.

The fob works but I cannot start the truck with this key. The engine cranks for 3-4 seconds and stops.

Is there some sort of chip or something that must also be programmed?

This is for a 2005 Sequoia.

 

I just used the original fob that came with the truck to program from. Other than that, I didn't do anything other than have my key cut at the local key shop instead of the dealer.
I've done 2 of these keys. Both start the truck but the key shop got a little sloppy on the 2nd one as it doesn't work manually in the door to well.
Maybe the 2005 used a different chip in the key? I used to have a 2000 VW Eurovan and in order to use aftermarket keys, you had to cut the chip out of the factory key.

 

Speedtre, I have a 2002 Tundra with the RS3000 system located under the dash. I just pulled the dash and located it and got all of the information off of it. The FCC ID on the RS3000 control unit is BAB237000-129. the model is RS3000 (08190-00921). I have never owned a key fob for the truck but i was wondering if i purchase a fob online with the same FCCID, would it work with this system?

 

Sequoias have immobilisers the key is needs to be registered to the immobiliser ecu seperate from the fob. Tech stream is the only thing that can do this as far as I know

 

Kinda browsed this thread, and am now watching. I've been interested in getting one more key fob. I have both original key fobs from 2002, but only one works. I tried a new battery in the dud. No dice.

I THINK I have the RS3000 something maybe. I'm not sure.

I've also been interested in extending the range of the fob/antenna. As it stands right now my button works randomly from as little as 2 feet away from drivers door to as much as 15 feet away from truck. Most times it doesn't work at all even with the good fob.

I'll come back, and read more on this thread when I'm not lit, (might be drunk by now. Lol)

 

In theory yes...that should work. It's hard to find RS3000s FOBs cheap online, so it may just be worth it to go to a local key place and have them program it to be sure instead of getting the wrong one shipped to you and programming it yourself.

 

Do you mean a locksmith? If so, will they have key fobs available? I thought they would only program a fob that I have.
