At least it sounds like she's under control, which is good place to work from.

How would I teach that? She has exceeded my expectations. I dont know how to train her, it's just her instincts and it's awesome to see(shes my first hunting dog). In all honesty just her retrieving downed birds is good enough for me. She surprised me when she crossed a river and brought one back.

When they are young they don't understand that you will follow them when they get on a scent. All of their early experiences teach them to watch *you* and go where *you* go.

I've had good success taking a young dog into really good 'birdy' ground by myself and just following the dog everywhere they wanted to go for a few days. (Only make course corrections to keep them safe and to keep them hunting where you have permission.)

When they finally find a bird on their own make sure you knock it down and give them lots of praise. Eventually they'll understand that they have permission to follow their nose when they're in the field.

Just watch them really close when they start tracking something. In your area there are tons of porcupines and dogs seem to love the way they smell.

One last thing I just remembered for flushing dogs. You don't want to trade one problem for a different one. Make sure she never gets out of shotgun range while you're following her in the beginning.

That means you walk fast, jog and even sometimes run to keep her in range once she starts tracking something. Good stuff always happens within shotgun range, never over the horizon without you.

She'll learn to check back to see where you are and adjust her position to stay in range without any command.

Had a fun trip to Wyoming on a good tag I don't hunt elk regularly and this is only my second mature bull. Public land DIY. The wind was something to behold...IMG_0899.jpg

    Still rolling stock baby....
And finally after my mis this morning on a nice fat doe my blackpowder dry spell has ended. Today I took my first deer with a muzzleloader.
Small 6 point cull buck. Walked in about 45 minutes after the Doe

I admit after the mis on the doe I was being pretty hard on myself.

The buck came in from my left and I fired and missed. WTF!!!! Well he just stood around so I reloaded thinking that fucker is going to run off but he did not. So I took aim and said I will not mis. I connected. It was quartering shot left to right.
a little to far back. He started to fall but ran into the tree line and went down. got back up and down again. Shit I thought as I reloaded.
he then went behind some cedars so I left him.
An hour later decided to take a peek and he was gone. Ended up tracking him 300 yards and across a creek. Found him bedded down in think cover and gave him the finished shot to his neck.
I felt bad for the bad shot but thankful I found him and finished the job.
That hole I his leg is the exit of my bullet. Entrance was his left side just below the ribs.

anyway he’s a young one and there is going to be venison in the freezer.

Congrats to all that have harvested this year. I didn't have any luck on my muzzleloader elk hunt a couple weeks ago (insert sad face) but I'm hopeful for this week's deer hunt!
