2003 with no power

The battery is fully charged, but the locks, lights, everything is dead. Any ideas. It was working fine on Tuesday, dead Wednesday when I went to use it.

 

How did you test the battery??

Check the battery terminals connections. Make sure they are clean and tight.

Check the grounds under the hood.

 

Any work of any kind performed between Tues being fine and dead Wed ?

 

Check your fuses.

 

Have the battery on a charger. Just went out to make sure everything was clean and connected properly. Reset the charger on it and going to give it another hour. No work done on it between it working and not working! Just no power at all to the cab. I was wondering if their is a main fuse that could be out.

 

Load test the battery or you are just going in circles.
As an example. Last year my wife drove to a job interview. When she comes out to leave our 2002 Sequoia won't crank over. Everything is dead she said. Told her to call AAA nothing I can do from 50 miles away. Won't crank with AAAs jump. Driver tells her starter is bad. After tow truck drops it off I check battery voltage. Somewhere around 12.5 don't remember exactly. Load test it. Drops to near 0. Replace battery. Fires right up.

 

Tis the time of year when batteries start to give up the ghost. Happens in the fall/winter change in temp every year.

They are all pretty much made by the same manufacturer anymore. Costco/Walmart are your best bet. Good quality, price and warranty handling.

 

You'll have to use a voltmeter on the battery to have any idea if it's fully charged.

Measure the voltage across the terminals immediately after the charger is disconnected. Then, let the battery rest awhile after charging, say an hour or two, and then measure the voltage across terminals again. Fully charged should be 13.6-13.8 volts. If the voltage has dropped during the rest period, then you probably have a dead cell. Batteries today are notorious for internal loss of conductivity or "dead cells".

Dead cells manifest quickly. I went to do errands, grocery store, gas station, and each time the battery started the truck like normal. When I got home, I stopped in the driveway and shut it off to bring in the groceries. When I went back out to put the truck away (five minutes later), the battery was done. That is the reason I will not buy the cheapest flooded lead-acid battery anymore...only AGM ($$$) for me.

 

Walmart batteries are now manufactured by Johnson Controls. Decent battery company.

BBP (Clarios) now makes most all the automotive batteries on the market. Those batteries are, no doubt, still made in the same plants. To the extent BBP was able to retain the knowledge and experience of older employees ready to retire, the quality may still be the same as before. I doubt quality has improved.

Over the last four years, the life of flooded lead-acid battery appears to be declining as the purity of recycled lead declines. In the sixties, a good battery would last 60 months. My experience now is that flooded lead-acid batteries manufactured in the last four years are typically lasting half that or less.

Every battery I’ve ever bought lasted until the week after the warranty.

36 month battery lasts 36 months plus one week.

Bosch is my battery for life because they have the best warranty thats PRORATED after the life of the battery. I did not realize this until I took the truck up to PEP-boyz (where I purchased the original 3 years plus one week prior) for a new battery and the guy swapped a new one in for free!
