Any way to disable the ‘automatic’ cargo light?

You obviously don't indulge in any night time stalking... I mean...

To be fair it's always more of a bother than a problem. The only time it used to be a problem was when I was going to the drive in movies pretty frequently. Tends to bother people behind you and then they want to come knock on your window.

 

Most stalking is done online nowadays, but I use my stalker van if I have to go in person.



I could see the issue at a drive in. I honestly thought the switch in the cab would turn it off, but I never tried.

 

Anything a vehicle does that you can't turn off is a problem.

I took my bulb out, seemed the easiest solution.

 

I wonder if anyone has tried to plasti-dip the inside lens? Might be another solution. Spray like 3/4’s of the inside lenses so the light is muted, but still available. Silver tape would work, too.

This would probably be the easiest way to have both worlds (cargo lights, with full manual control), I doubt I’ll do that though.

Yeah, it’s really just a bother, not a problem, I just like to have control of things coming on or not. I was just hoping there was a simple solution, and it looks like there isn’t (unless it can be reprogrammed).

 

I too wish I could control it, as to it being off or on. Like @PenderBen states, it is not a problem as much as it is a bother. Well that is for me, but for my neighbor's daughter it might be a problem when I access my truck before dawn to go fishing and those flood lights masquerading as cargo lights turn on. As to removing those lights or tempering their output, it goes against the occasional need for lighting up the rear of the truck and points further on. Teamed with their sisters I installed as backup lights, they do a phenomenal job when I really must see behind me when dark out. I just wished they weren't automatic, or better yet, were controllable with the FOB.

Yeah we have that button, the point is we don't want to hit that button every time we park the truck. It's a dumb idea to force that to come on automatically.

Think about your dome lights, they all have a 3 way switch. On, off, on when doors open. That's a nice feature, it would be irritating if those came on every time you parked too.

Pulling the bulbs is harder than pulling the fuse, only because the flimsy gasket on that light is fiddly. There is a fuse under the dash that will totally disable that light.

 

Making it even worse in my opinion is the fact that every time I open the door the light comes on before I have a chance to turn it off. Daytime, nighttime, it makes no difference. There are times when I simply do not want it to come on when I access the cab, but the only way to accomplish that feat is to remove the bulb before opening the door. Sometimes I want it to come on automatically, but more often not. I wish we had an option to effectively deal with this short of installing and uninstalling the bulb to get the functioning we want.

If it takes two turns of the key in the passenger door to open up all the door locks, then why not three to turn off the cargo light's automatic function. Something like that. I think Toyota took a good idea and subverted it.

 

Maybe upgrade the switch to a toggle?

 

Daytime running lights must really piss this guy off...

 

They are horrific.

But easily disabled while retaining the option to turn your headlights on...or not....as you see fit.

 

I saved your disable pic from way back if I decide to do so. You have no weird problems associated with the disable? Yours is 2000 and mine 2002 should be same wire?

 

No, no problems at all. The one guy who said it disabled all his headlights it turned out his normal headlights where broken and he had been running with JUST his DTR's for years without knowing it.
