$1100 Tundra build

Seems like a good call on keeping the truck. She's got a new frame and I'm sure you can do some work on the body rust.

As for the brakes, are you going to go with the power stop kit or just OEM?

 

Probably just some reman calipers for now. You can get 13WL kits pretty cheap, so I’ll probably run whatever comes with for a while, then upgrade to some nice pads and rotors.

 

Did some stuff over the weekend.

1. Did an engine oil change to mobile full synthetic high mileage. Happy so far. Somehow my oil filter got sucked on too tight. It took 3 screwdriver holes to get the sucker off. Yuck.

2. Transfer case fluid change. This went pretty easily. Put some mobile one

$39 75w-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75w-90 in there. The old stuff was darker, but not contaminated or anything.

3. Rear diff fluid. I decided to go ahead with the rear diff fluid as my axle seal seemed to have stopped leaking. This stuff was NASTY. Full of water and crap. Glad I did that. I put Walmart brand 80w-90 in there for now to flush all the sludge out, then I’ll put some good stuff in after a while.




4. Steering rack bushings. This was not that bad aside from when the washer of one of the bolts got rusted to the bushing sleeve. That meant I couldn’t use a ball joint press to get it out, so I used a claw hammer prying sideways until I could get a channel locks on it, and then a pipe wrench. New bushings went in pretty easy too, excrete for he center vertical mount was slightly misaligned from the bushing sleeve, and there’s nothing to pry against to move it, and the bold comes from the top, so you can’t just pound it in. I ended up going to menards and buying a 14mmx1.50 bolt thy had threads running all the way down and running that through the bottom. Seems to have helped My steering feel though. Return on center is a bit more snappy, and the steering just feels a bit more tight.

 

That diff juice looks horrible. I'm surprised you are not having issues back there. I definitely agree you should flush that once or twice. It's cheap insurance. I eventually with with Lucas, 80W 90 I think.

For the new bushings, did you grease or lube them? I heard a few people say you should do this to avoid squeaking. I'll be doing that job next weekend so I may buy some silicone spray.

 

The oil filter somehow gets sucked on mine as well. I’ve been able to get a large pair of channel locks on the filter to tweak the seal until a hand can finish it off.

 

That is a large amount of work. It seems to be working though. Good work and hope to see it completed.

 

Another good day on the Tundy. Got my 13WL calipers, rotors, and pads installed today, and they're awesome. My pedal travel have somehow increased though.

oh well, good, shudder-free brakes > brake feel.

After I got my brakes done, my dad needed some assistance in picking up his f350 parts truck. so, I pulled the heavy sucker home with my truck. It was impossible to load it with weight balanced correctly on a 16+2 dovetail trailer however, so we went REALLY slow. 45MPH MAX. She had plenty of power and brakes to handle it though, and I monitored trans temps the whole time, and it never went above 185*!


Cargo check on the way home.







Made it safe and sound!

 

Possibly at the max tow weight? Impressive!

Just a thought: with that bed rust, it might look cool as a flat bed [DYI], if you're in to that kind of thing.

 

Stiffen the frame make the bed two levels. Haul stuff and camp on top??!!

 

Long time no post! I kinda forgot about my build thread. been keeping the peeps updated in the "what have you done today" thread. I'll post updates one by one.

 

I painted the grille black! not a huge difference thanks to the grille guard, but I think it's a nice touch.

 

Installed new offload lights on the grille guard. They're Auxbeams I got on Amazon. they're CRAZY bright; much brighter than my high beams.

 

I bought an old android phone for cheap to run torque pro to monitor coolant temp, trans temp, intake temp, vacuum, lead, throttle percentage, etc. for towing and my general viewing pleasure. I set it up so that it puts the phone to sleep when I turn off the ignition, and wakes up when I turn the key back on. has been working well for over 3 months!

 

A couple pics comparing the size difference between my tundra and a 2019 f150, and 1999 f250 Superduty.

 

Installed a new exhaust on the Tundra! I used an Aero Turbine muffler and made a custom side exit.

Got a new topper! it was a steal at only $100. Had to drive over 300 miles each way to get it though. Got a hair over 19MPG on the way back.




Wired up the rear brake light a couple days later.

 

Also, the truck has been my daily driver for the last 3 months or so. I have 235k on it at this point. Last oil change I sent off to blackstone labs for analysis. I'm still waiting for the results, but I'll post when I get it back.

Nice truck and awesome you got the frame replaced! I got mine for around the same price but it was wrecked. Did your truck come with the limited slip differential?

made a new wiring harness for my cab lights a couple weeks ago. As usual I forgot to post it here.



Also, got some free brake work done by my brother who's in automotive tech school. my rear brakes are 100% rebuilt, parking brake parts and all.

 

Oh! and I installed a new receiver hitch, so I can remove my hitch from my truck! haven't had a chance to tow with it yet though.

 

oh, and my brother installed new leaf springs for me a while back too. a lot has changed in the past month!
