REAR DIFF COVER

I know that the first gen Tundra doesnt have a rear diff cover , has anyone done anything to dress theirs up like a skid plate or anything? Just looking for some ideas?

Thank you, I didn't think about that , I have seen that there are not really any aftermarket oprions for gen 1 tundras , is that because gen 2 Tacoma parts will fit ?

The reason he mentioned that is the rear end from the 00-06 Tundras and similar vintage Sequioas have the same differentials as the 95.5-04 Tacoma’s.

The reason there aren’t many offroad parts for the first gen tundra mainly stems from the fact they weren’t the most popular offroad rig. Most people would choose a Tacoma or 4Runner instead due to size of the Tundra vs those options. Aside from that they were more expensive than either of those when new. People just didn’t want to rock crawl or do harder off-roading in a big “full size” truck that cost so much.

It seems they have been gaining steam here in the last few years since shops have been specializing in Tundras.

 

Also, I believe its a numbers game for aftermarket business. IIRC, The 1st Gens weren’t made in large production numbers.

One our the vendors here subb’d out his product to another company as the money wasn’t hitting.

 

I will have to respectfully disagree.
The 2000 MY sold right at 100,000 which was roughly the same as the MY 2012 (according to Wikipedia sales numbers).

Tundras have an 8.4" diff, I believe Tacos have an 8" right? Is the axle outside the same size?

 

I do believe that it is a numbers thing , the tundra was not that popular, so no need for aftermarket companies to make that many parts for them. I actually sold them from 2002 to 2010 , , the 2nd Gen Tacoma parts for things like ditch light brackets, they look identical but I paid 3 times for tundra brackets.

 

They have become more popular, I think it's because the first generation tundra and 2nd Gen Tacoma are close to the same size but you can get a tundra cheaper now , and you have the v8 engine ....hopefully there will be more options for first generation tundras soon , i want and nfab front bull bar that fits Tacoma and it is awesome looking, I figure now that I can get one and just modify it to fit the tundra , it will be a pricey experiment hopefully it will work lol

 

I did order the rear differential cover , from yotamasters , thank you so much for that , once I install it I will post pics after its painted

 

The problem was 6 year run. Flash in the pan in the truck market.

 

No worries bud. IIRC, Tundras (in general) have lower production #’s compared to the other Big 3 manufacturers trucks? And, most importantly, as stated above the short run of 6 years.

My assumption (based on foggy memory) was based on comparative production numbers with other manufacturers in the Tundra Class. And, most importantly, as stated above the short run of 6 years. Also, add in the age of the youngest 1st Gen and they ain’t multiplying as they rust/have accidents/fall into disrepair/etc.

95.5-2015 Tacoma’s without e-lockers have the 8.4” diff. Same as 00-06 Tundras.
The Tacoma with e-locker has an 8” diff. They made it an 8.25 in 2016.
