How long did you wait before you regeared?

    Hi everyone,

I got my Tundra this past May and put in the 3/2 lift with Bilstein 6112/5100 combo and CB +3 shackles. Drove it with stock tires on 20” wheels for a while. Then i put on 34” Cooper AT3 XLTs just a week ago. There wasn’t much of a performance difference driving with the 34” tires other than the MPG going from 14 down to 11. I don’t feel the trans hunting at all. I pulled my 7000# trailer (2400# empty) with no problem. I was doing 65 hovering around 2000 rpm with tow/haul on.

So how long did you wait before you regeared to 4.88/5.29? Should I wait until my warranty Toyota Extra Care Platinum 8yr/125k miles is out? I want to regear for MPG’s sake but when you regear, you end up using not Toyota fluids. Has anyone regeared before warranty is out?

If you're looking to increase mpg with the regear in order to save money on gas, it will take quote a while to offset the cost of the regear.

I've seen quite of few posts here where they say they average 18 to 20 mpg at 80mph with 3/1 lift and 35s. Maybe they will chime in what they've done to achieve that.

It may take a few years to break even on the cost of gears. Some basic math:

    Assumptions:
    10K miles per year
    $2.40 per gallon

    10k miles @ 11MPG = $2,182
    10k miles @ 14MPG = $1,715

You’re paying $467 extra per year with the lift & tires.

I’m going to assume it is $3,000 for parts and labor for new gears. It will take about 6.4 years to break even. But there are some benefits to regearing aside from MPG:

    - Performance/acceleration
    - Increase in distance per tank (90-120 miles)
    - Reduced stress/wear on the transmission

    Hope this helps.

Are you factoring in the difference in tire size in your MPG calculations or are you just looking at the instant MPG figure on the info screen?

I run 37s with 4.88 regear. Never gotten better than 15 mpg.

It’s definitely due to the larger tire size that my MPG went down. I’m also worried with the long term effects on the transmission.

    What I mean is this:

If your new tires are 34’s and stock are 32’s there is a 6% difference in height.
When you hand calculate your MPG you multiply the miles x .06 then add that figure to your miles. After that you then divide your miles by number of gallons it took to fill up.
Depending on everything, if you’re not factoring in the difference, you could see 1-2 mpg difference.

    Corrected
    250x.06=15. 250+15=265. 265/20= 13.25 mpg

    Uncorrected
    250/20=12.5mpg.

I regeared at 4000 miles, and never looked back. I went with 4.88s since I plan to stay on 35s.

On a good road trip, I've gotten 16.5 MPG (I'm somewhat of a lead foot, too). The performance is back, and the transmission is happier.

Although, the Harrop supercharger is getting installed at the end of the month, with OV tuning, so I anticipate lower MPGs due to my lead foot.

How many miles do you have now? Did you go with Nitro 4.88s? Have you changed fluids yet?

I'm only at 9000 (not a daily driver). Yes, Nitro 4.88s, with Auburn Pro series LSD. Yep, changed the fluid at 500 miles (with LSD additive).

In my opinion, If you plan on keeping a Tundra long term, than definitely worth the investment.

bro I hear you. I moved to Texas from CA 2 years ago. Definitely don’t miss the gas tax. It’s about $2.20 consistently for me now.
