I don't know much about this payload vs tow capacity stuff, but can you remove the spare from the truck and stick it in or on the back of your trailer? Also put gear and wife in the trailer rather than truck. This should help increase payload by the weight of the spare tire+wheel, other gear and wife, while also decreasing the tongue weight if you store all that in the back of the trailer, while only adding minimally to the tow weight. I really do think the spare is the easiest and heaviest thing you can remove/relocate. that and if you have a tonneau and side steps you can remove. When you aren't towing either just toss it in the bed or remount it in its spot.

Lol re the wife. I like the way you think. This thread has made me think about ways to mount my spare on the back of my RV.

I could mount my spare on back of the RV and stow the RV spare under the bed in the RV. Bingo, 100 lbs. I knew you guys would come through for me.

    Not really

Not sure which wheels you have. My stock 20" limited wheels weighed a metric ST. I cut a lot of wheel weight switching over to Ray10s. I gained it back putting on much larger E rated AT2's but you could put P's back on

Does reducing weight on your wheels and tires increase your payload? Serious question.

I was thinking that when I posted it. I googled it and got "Gross vehicle weight rating - curb weight = payload capacity." Tires are included in curb weight so I don't see why not.

Lol nothing you can do will increase payload. That is a legal thing Toyota sets. However, you can change what your actual payload is...
Back seat weighs 100 lb or so. Spare tire is another 100 lb. All the BS people carry (Tools, etc) weighs 50 lb. There's 250 lb.

What determines payload is frame, suspension and brakes. Suspension is set soft for ride. Frame you cannot easily modify. Brakes are great but you could do a bit better.
I have had my bed loaded and setting on the stops. Probably well over 1K. Could I fix it by adding a different spring? Sure but then it.would be shit when unloaded.
I look at it like this... how often is it going to be loaded with over a half ton versus no load. For me, its about 95% no load, 5% loaded and very seldom loaded to max. So what should design be? No brainer... keep it stock. When you need to haul heavy use a trailer. I had 24 bales of hay on it the other day. Wet. Most of it was on a trailer. Good luck!

Re: the original question. Why is the payload so iffy?

In comparison to domestics, (where you have to change to specific engines, trannys and diffs BTW), is it only because there’s not really drivetrain options on Tundras?

Interior, options and cab size all pay a big deal on payload, sun roof, rear glass with motor, bigger cab, bigger doors, electric seat, heated and cool seat, sound system, seat materials, drive Tran 4x4 vs 2wd. That’s why the most payload is the SR work truck.

I bought this truck with it's true intention in mind: trips to the grocery store/mall and joy rides with my dog and an occasional road trip. It looks good and sounds good doing all that and as an added little bonus it holds its value quite nicely. My previous truck was a Duramax so I knew exactly what I was getting with the Tundra. No regrets.

Get a trailer for heavy loads, ive been using my Tundras to pull my bobcat, dump trailer and tool trailer with no problems for the last 12 yrs. just bought a 2019 and put some Timbrens on the rear to reduce the squat.

Where are you getting 1k payload? Do you have the 5.7? Should be 1600 lbs which is not too far off from the competition

My little bastard has a payload capacity of 1690, and a towing capacity of 10,400.
I estimate that the Undercover Classic, bed mat, Line-X and myself account for 450 lbs of payload leaving me with 1240 to play with.

It's on the sticker inside the door. Tundras have a pretty wide range of payload depending on options. The Platinums are loaded down with a lot of heavy options. The moonroof is actually pretty heavy. Also the 38 gal fuel tank and additional fuel decreases payload quite a bit.

As far as getting a trailer, I have one. An RV with a hitch weight of about 550 lbs.

I think I’d start with ditching the runningboards altogether. And then as you said, when you tow. put the spare in the trailer. Other than that you’re really limited, unless you want to start removing things like the seats.

I'd like to ditch the steps but my wife and 88 yo mom need them to get in the truck. I like that they protect from door dents.

The running boards aren’t ridiculously heavy. Also if you need them they need to stay.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I can reduce weight by a couple hundred lbs which will let me haul about 400 with the trailer attached. That will work. Upside, the truck pulls my 5,600 lb loaded camper with relative ease.

I rent a trailer from Uhaul if I have anything really heavy or dirty to haul. ~$25 a day.

RV weight on hitch 550. Two passengers 300. That puts me at 850 with only 150 left. I would like to haul a generator at 100 lbs in the bed. Dogs and other misc are probably 100.

You should have gotten a 3/4 or 1 Ton truck. If you want more payload that's the only way your gonna get it.

I respectfully disagree. You can get way more than 1,000 lbs payload in a 1/2 ton. And my Tundra is fine for my needs.

Interesting. Mine says max payload is 1440 but the sticker inside the door says it’s reduced by 130 lbs because of an option. I’m wondering if it’s the running boards and 20” tires. So you buy the higher end truck and it kills the payload? Mines an SR5 with leather. I looked inside a limited the other day and notice notta difference except the 2 tone trim and the limited badge on the console. What do they put on a platty to use up the weight?

The TWR is reduced 1,000 lbs for the 38 gal tank and tow package so that has to be a lot of the weight. It looks like the moon roofs are heavy too. Mine has the console safe, but not sure what that weighs.
