My dog has lupus and is being treated for it.

If you treated a dog with lupus what would you do?

And thank you by the way.

Always good to get others eyes on.

She was diagnosed at two years old and is now four.

She is on two medications and vitamins

Awesome of you both to do this.

I have just a general question; is pet insurance worth it? From your perspective are these insurance companies pretty willing to pay out if/when something happens or do the pet owner's end up fighting with them to get claims paid?

Not an expert or Vet. But did previously have pet insurance on two dogs at same time. Never had an issue with claims, but our policy had like a $100 deductible. We cancelled after about 5 years, Golden Retriever never ate any thing that needed removal. We decided to just "self insure", create an account for the same money to go into and use if needed.
Pet insurance could pay off if pet gets really sick and needs chemo or something.

Was an ANA titer or tick borne disease titer performed on your dog?

I feel it is worth it. I encounter situations on a daily basis where financial constraints prevent the best care for a patient. Many surgical and medical conditions are covered under insurance, and it helps us tremendously when we are trying to diagnose or treat a condition. That being said, I'm surprised at the fact that not many of my clients have it.

Any Insurance companies you two would recommend?

I would also like to know the insurance companies that try harder to not pay out or reduce the doctors rates.

Honestly couldn't tell you, since I don't really deal with it very often. I would look at online reviews to get a good sense of who is naughty and who is nice.

I have the same question - my dogs are getting older and we've had a few emergency vet visits recently. We're ok financially in most situations, but I would hate to be in a position where the cost of a procedure or testing was outside of my comfort zone. I've been considering pet insurance but have heard mixed opinions about it..

If you guys had a recommendation regarding some of the better companies to deal with it would be greatly appreciated.

After some digging and asking around, Trupanion seems to be a good insurance company. No payout limit, 90% coverage, choose deductible, use any veterinarian. Trupanion.com

Emergency medicine and surgery is the main reason I recommend pet insurance.

I wish we did pet insurance a couple months back. Our almost 2 year old Akita partially tore her ACL/CCL and underwent TPLO surgery last week which cost us $5000.... Hopefully her recovery is good but we were told she has a 50% chance of tearing her other one.

Any tips on recovery and possible rehab at home? Thank you so much!

Ouch!!! We had a Lab mix years ago that had TPLO once for $1800, 5 years later the other one was $3500ish..... No insurance either.

His rehab was on his own, fairly functional in a few weeks, normal in about 4-6 weeks.

A broad answer would be immunosuppressants. Prednisone, azathioprine, cyclosporine etc. Pred comes with side effects and can potentially lead to other medical conditions but works great. I usually start with pred and if I am able to get them under control I will start another immunosuppressant and slowly wean off pred. The goal is to get to the lowest dose possible but still maintain clinical improvement. make sense?

I have dealt with multiple people with insurance and all worked out well. The clients were reimbursed in a timely fashion per the owner. FYI pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Keep her at an ideal weight being overweight increases her chances. Swimming in my opinion is the best exercise, great for range of motion and very little stress in joints.

    @jaredmillerdvm @Kerch71

Thanks for offering up your advice.

I have a 3 year old Boxer male. Perfect health always other than a slight allergy to some rubber dog toys. We moved 2 months ago and ever since he seems to grind his teeth whenever he's settling down. I can't imagine it's stress from the move because we went from 1/4 acre to 2 acres. He's fine when running around or just hanging out, but as soon as he lays down to rest or sleep he grinds his teeth for about 30 seconds off and on. Any thoughts?

Yeah, TPLO prices have gotten ridiculous. I agree that keeping weight to a minimum will help decrease the chances of tearing the other cruciate, and yes 50% of dogs will tear the other. Swimming and gradual return to normal activity over 6-8 weeks is the best rehab you can do. Probably easier said than done in a young Akita! The orthopedic surgeon should have given you a plan for recovery, if not I would ask them for one or if they have rehabilitation specialists that they use.

Cruciate ligament disease is a degenerative process in dogs and is not usually caused by an injury, that's why the other one ruptures in 50% of cases. If that happens, it doesn't mean you have to do surgery again. You can if you choose, but my feeling is that, as long as you have one surgically stabilized knee, you can manage the other medically. It will eventually stabilize on its own but will have significant arthritis down the road, so you need to start on joint supplements. My 145 lb Coonhound/Great Dane mix had a TPLO on one knee, then blew out his other one 3 months later. He went on and did fine, would just take a bad step now and then.

Guess it could be stress or dental malalignment may be causing him discomfort. He would benefit from a thorough oral exam including the jaw joints. Does he chew food normally or does alot fall out when chewing?

The only reason I ask is that lupus (SLE) can look like some tick borne diseases so you want to make sure and rule those out. The ANA test can help confirm SLE. The treatment is exactly what @jaredmillerdvm said.
