Factory Navigation=FRUSTRATION

On a recent trip to Maine I needed to depend on the truck's navigation to help get around. Is it normal for the nav to fail to alert: toll roads, bumper to bumper traffic and redirecting through urban areas and DIRT roads? Maybe I'm over reacting. Can someone please suggest a stand alone nav unit with a decent sized screen. I'm done with the factory navigation. Sorry for the rant.

 

Yea, I’m not a huge fan of the nav in my Platinum. But I think it’s because I need to learn more about it first . I usually use my phone, bought a pro clip dash mount and haven’t looked back.

 

Maybe check your settings. These factory units may not be as user friendly as aftermarket but they do indeed work. I use mine all the time in areas I've never been to.

 

Google maps on your smart phone. It's never steered me wrong. Can't remember the last time I've used a vehicle's navigation system.

 

you need to go in and tweak your settings. Is the unit perfect? No, but after paying with the settings it works just fine for me

 

Like any pre-loaded chip, it is limited compared to a live internet system. But you can make some tweaks in settings, such as avoiding toll roads. Google is better, but the built in Nav usually helps me re-route around traffic. If it mattered a lot to me, I’d probably use Waze.

 

I have Waze. My trust in the factory nav is pretty slim.

 

I forgot to mention that the Scout GPS Link will not pair with my iPhone either. Did a search on here and apparently the Entune needs to be updated each time my phone gets a software update, is this true?

 

All of your concerns listed are why I ended up going aftermarket and using CarPlay/Android Auto. I could never get Scout GPS to work, but from what I heard I was not missing out on anything remotely good there. The factory nav isn't the worst I've ever used, but it's definitely years behind Waze and Google Maps.

 

Does your deck have the actual Navigation with the map card ?
If not, Scout is junk, The actual Navigation unit works fine..

 

Change that crap out. I just did. I never used it anyways, had used my phone + Google map or Waze but now with a new deck that has wireless/wired Android auto.

 

i use waze on phone. It save me a lot of times, cuase it show you the fastest way around the NCal traffic.

 

Waze has screwed my with it's traffic reports more times that I can count

 

Waze still more accurate for live crow source traffic than Google Maps.

I don't think there's a perfect map out there but i'm sure these are probably some of the best.

Could always go old school and simply enjoy the traffic.

 

That's what I use. I have a Google Pixel phone so everything is based on the Google platform - addresses in my contact list etc. sync. from my database in the office. I can plan a route in the office or at home on the computer and then just pull it up on the phone. My phone mounts on the dash right next to the radio, easy to see, and always up to date.

 

Scout is even worse than the factory nav.
Factory nav works okay when you have it set up right and get familiar with it, but Google Maps is just so much easier.

 

I have used WAZE for about 3 years. It used to be better IMO. It has saved my bacon in KY once. By routing me away from a 7 mile interstate backup. I made it past the backup on surface roads with no traffic and only delayed me a few minutes. It would have been hours on the interstate. There has been a time or two that it has screwed me though too.

For work to and fro, I end up using waze then checking Google maps for traffic to see if there are any alternate route waze didn't show me that are green and not red. I will drive miles out of my way if I don't have to sit in traffic. I hate sitting in traffic.

 

You have to contribute when you use waze tho, you can’t just use it and don’t put in effort of reporting the traffic. The more ppl input the more accurate information they have. Maybe in your area not many people report traffic that’s why it’s no accurate.

 

I'm gonna ask Santa for a Garmin Drive Smart 61, in the meantime I deleted Scout from my phone and will try Waze. Thanks for all the feedback.

 

Update... I decided to go with a Garmin Glo2 ($94) and use Google Maps with my iPad which I will mount via a Ram Mount. Will come back and post pics after the install.
